Zi Wei: The Emperor Star, leadership and dignity
Wherever Zi Wei lands, that is the area where you want the final say. In the Spouse Palace it asks to be respected by a partner, in the Career Palace it wants authority to decide, in the Wealth Palace it spends to keep up appearances. Zi Wei brings scale and pride, and also a reluctance to back down.
Where Zi Wei sits on the chart
Zi Wei is the starting point of the Zi Wei group, placed by the lunar birthday and the five-element bureau. Tian Ji, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong and Lian Zhen are counted backward from Zi Wei; the eight stars of the Tian Fu group are counted from Tian Fu, which mirrors Zi Wei across the Yin–Shen axis. Once Zi Wei is placed, all fourteen major stars are fixed.

Brightness
Exalted: Chou, Wu and Wei; Strong: Yin, Mao, Si, Shen, You and Hai; Favorable: Chen and Xu; Neutral: Zi.
We use the Complete Book brightness table; other schools’ tables differ in places. Bright means the star’s traits flow easily, fallen means they take more effort or go astray more easily; neither means good or bad luck.
Transformations of Zi Wei
- Zi Wei with Hua Quan: people born in Ren year. See Hua Quan in the twelve palaces.

The birth-year stem sets these; Zi Wei changes years at Chinese New Year. Each decade and each year also has its own set of Four Transformations, which bring out Zi Wei’s Lu, Quan, Ke or Ji at different times.
What to check first when reading Zi Wei
The first thing to check with Zi Wei is whether anyone is standing beside it. Zi Wei needs helpers such as Zuo Fu and You Bi or Tian Kui and Tian Yue; with them, that palace gains real stature, and without them it turns into doing everything alone and not taking advice. The second thing is its partner: Zi Wei with Tian Fu, Tan Lang, Tian Xiang, Qi Sha or Po Jun are very different combinations, and alone in Zi or Wu it leans on Tan Lang in the opposite palace.

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they do not measure anyone’s fortune.

Which palace is best for Zi Wei?
There is no single best. Zi Wei shows its leadership most readily in the Life and Career Palaces, but the rule is the same everywhere: with helper stars it has presence, and alone it struggles. The stars sharing or flanking its palace matter more than which palace it is in.
