Moon Sign Calculator: Find Your Moon Sign and Understand Your Emotional Needs

Your Sun sign is who you want to be; your Moon sign is who you are when you are tired, upset, or home with your guard down. Partners and family often experience you more as your Moon than your Sun. You don't always need a birth time for your Moon sign: on roughly 56% of days the Moon stays in one sign all day.

Enter your birth date and birthplace to find your Moon sign, together with your full birth chart. A birth time gives the most accurate result; if you don't know it, tick "Birth time unknown" and, if the Moon changed sign on your birthday, both possibilities will be listed. How the Moon sign differs from the Sun sign

In astrology the Sun and Moon are a pair: the Sun is will and outward striving, the Moon is emotion and inward need. What you show at work and in a crowd is mostly your Sun; what comes out when you are alone, ill, or arguing with someone close is your Moon.

So the question a Moon sign answers is not "what kind of person are you" but "what do you need to feel safe". A Moon in Aries needs freedom to act, a Moon in Taurus needs a steady routine, a Moon in Cancer needs to care and be cared for. Knowing your own and your partner's Moon signs makes it easier, in the middle of an argument, to see what the other person actually wants.

How fast the Moon moves

The Moon is the fastest body in the sky and changes sign about every two and a half days. Our engine scanned every lunar ingress from 1950 to 2030 (12,993 in all):

54.6 hThe average time the Moon spends in one sign, about 2.3 days
46.9–61.1Shortest to longest stay in hours. The Moon's orbit is elliptical, and it moves faster when closer to Earth
43.9%Share of calendar days in Taipei on which the Moon changes sign
56%Days on which the Moon stays in one sign; people born on these days know their Moon sign even without a birth time

The Moon's longitude was scanned hourly from 1950 to 2030 and each ingress found by bisection; calendar days are Taipei local dates (including daylight saving time in 1945–1979).

In other words, if you don't know your birth time, there is roughly a six-in-ten chance that your Moon sign is still certain. In the other cases the Moon is in one of two neighboring signs; read both descriptions, and usually one fits noticeably better.

The twelve Moon signs

Each Moon sign covers three things: how your feelings come and go, what you need to feel safe, and how you react under pressure. Traditional astrology says the Moon is in domicile in Cancer and exalted in Taurus, and in fall in Scorpio and detriment in Capricorn. That describes how comfortably the Moon works in those signs, not how emotionally healthy anyone is. People with the Moon in Capricorn feel plenty; they are just used to picking up the responsibility first.

Moon in Aries

Feelings arrive fast and leave fast: angry now, over it in an hour. You need freedom to act; being bottled up or kept waiting is worse than being scolded. Under stress you want to do something: move, go out, fix the problem.

Fire · Cardinal sign | Ruler: Mars

Moon in Taurus

You need stability and familiarity: good food, good sleep, things in their place, and your mind settles. Sudden change unsettles you, and under pressure you retreat into a steady routine. Your attachments last, and so do your hurts.

Earth · Fixed sign | Ruler: Venus | Traditionally the Moon is in exaltation in Taurus

Moon in Gemini

You process feelings by talking; when something is on your mind you want to chat it through. You need people who can keep up with your thoughts. Under stress you overthink and lose sleep, and a change of topic or scene helps fastest.

Air · Mutable sign | Ruler: Mercury

Moon in Cancer

Feelings run fine and memory runs long; you remember the tone of a single sentence. You need to care for others and be cared for, and home and familiar people are where you recharge. Under stress you withdraw into your shell and look after yourself and your own first.

Water · Cardinal sign | Ruler: Moon | Traditionally the Moon is in domicile in Cancer

Moon in Leo

You need to be appreciated and seen; one sincere compliment can make your whole day. You express affection generously and want a heartfelt response. Under stress you guard your pride and hold it together, while quietly needing someone to say you did well.

Fire · Fixed sign | Ruler: Sun

Moon in Virgo

You steady your feelings by putting things in order: making lists and tidying the room are ways of tidying your mind. You need order and visible progress. Under stress you get anxious and self-critical, and what helps most is permission to be imperfect.

Earth · Mutable sign | Ruler: Mercury

Moon in Libra

You need harmony in your relationships; conflict and cold shoulders unsettle you. You care what others think and often smooth the atmosphere before dealing with your own feelings. Under stress you look for someone to talk it over with, but watch that you do not give in just to keep the peace.

Air · Cardinal sign | Ruler: Venus

Moon in Scorpio

Your feelings run strong and deep: calm on the surface, churning underneath. You need total trust and real intimacy; shallow relationships leave you hungry. Under stress you close off and work through it alone, and once hurt you find it hard to forgive.

Water · Fixed sign | Ruler: Mars (modern: Pluto) | Traditionally the Moon is in fall in Scorpio

Moon in Sagittarius

You need space and a sense of meaning; when low, a trip or learning something new works best. Optimistic and not one to brood, though busyness can become a way to outrun what you actually feel. Being fenced in or micromanaged makes you want to run.

Fire · Mutable sign | Ruler: Jupiter

Moon in Capricorn

Your feelings are held in; you shoulder responsibility first and deal with emotions later. You need a sense of control and a predictable future. Under stress you work even harder, and people assume you are fine when you simply are not used to showing weakness.

Earth · Cardinal sign | Ruler: Saturn | Traditionally the Moon is in detriment in Capricorn

Moon in Aquarius

You need freedom and space of your own; clingy relationships make you step back. You analyze your own emotions rationally, and friends relax you more than family does. Under stress you detach and watch events like an observer.

Air · Fixed sign | Ruler: Saturn (modern: Uranus)

Moon in Pisces

You are extremely receptive, and other people's moods easily become yours. You need quiet time and room to dream; music, art and solitude recharge you. Under stress you may want to escape, or end up carrying other people's burdens without noticing.

Water · Mutable sign | Ruler: Jupiter (modern: Neptune)

Your Moon's element: how you recharge

ElementMoon signsHow you recharge
FireAries, Leo, SagittariusGetting moving, doing something, being encouraged; being stuck and still drains you most
EarthTaurus, Virgo, CapricornGetting back to routine, sorting things out, practical care
AirGemini, Libra, AquariusTalking it out, chatting with people, looking at it from another angle, keeping a little distance
WaterCancer, Scorpio, PiscesBeing understood, having company, a safe place to set your feelings down

Comparing Moon elements with a partner or family is genuinely useful. An Air Moon wants to "talk about it" when upset, while a Water Moon just wants to be held; if each comforts the other in their own way, they keep missing each other.

A straight word: a birth chart is a language, not a prophecy

A birth chart draws the sky at the moment you were born so you can talk about personality and life themes in terms of planets, signs and houses. The planetary positions are astronomical fact and can be calculated very precisely; readings such as "Mars in Aries means drive" are astrological tradition, not scientific findings. It is a fine tool for knowing yourself and sorting out your thoughts, but it cannot make decisions for you. Moon sign FAQ

Do I need a birth time for my Moon sign?

Not always. Across 1950–2030, the Moon stayed in one sign all day on about 56% of days in Taipei, so people born on those days don't need a birth time. On the other 43.9% of days the Moon changes sign during the day, and you need the time to be sure. The calculator above checks this automatically.

What does your Moon sign mean?

Your Moon sign describes your emotional needs, where your sense of security comes from, and how you react in private. Your Sun sign is who you want to become; your Moon sign is who you are once your guard is down, and it is often what the people closest to you feel.

Which is more accurate, my Moon sign or my Sun sign?

They describe different layers. At work and in company, the Sun sign shows more; at home, in love and under heavy stress, the Moon sign does. Many people find their Moon sign "scarily accurate" because it describes the side they don't usually show.

Is a Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio bad?

Tradition places the Moon in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio, meaning its soft, flowing qualities find it harder to express themselves there: a Capricorn Moon tends to hold feelings in and get on with the job, a Scorpio Moon feels intensely but doesn't reveal much. It is a difference in how feelings are expressed, not a sign of emotional problems or bad relationships.

Does the Moon sign have anything to do with BaZi?

Not directly. BaZi takes its year and month from the Sun (the solar terms) and its day and hour pillars from the date and double-hour; the Moon's position plays no part. The Chinese lunar calendar does follow the Moon, but BaZi charts don't use lunar dates.
