Venus always stays near your Sun sign
Venus orbits inside the Earth's orbit, so from here it always appears close to the Sun, never more than about 47° away. Your Venus sign is therefore not random: it can only be your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side. We calculated every day from 1950 to 2030:

So a Gemini Sun can only have Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo. If someone online claims an Aries Sun with Venus in Libra, that chart was cast wrong.
Venus retrograde
Venus turns retrograde about every 19 months for about six weeks at a time, the least often of any planet: between 1950 and 2030 it was retrograde on only 7.3% of days. Astrological tradition says people born with Venus retrograde take a more inward approach to love and values, need time to work out what they really want, and often go through a few relationships before settling on their own standards.

Tradition places Venus in domicile in Taurus and Libra (the signs it rules), exalted in Pisces, in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo. Do I need a birth time for my Venus sign?
Most people don't. Venus usually spends close to a month in a sign; you only need a time if it changed sign on your birthday. The calculator above checks the start and end of the day automatically and lists both signs if Venus moved.

Can my Venus sign be far from my Sun sign?
No. Venus is never more than about 47° from the Sun, so your Venus sign is either your Sun sign or within two signs of it. From 1950 to 2030, the two were in the same sign on about 23.9% of days, and a gap of three signs or more never happened.
Does Venus in Aries or Scorpio mean bad luck in love?
Tradition places Venus in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, meaning its gentle, harmonizing side has a harder time coming through: Venus in Aries loves fast, Venus in Scorpio loves deeply and intensely. That is a love style, not bad luck, and plenty of people find it makes them more magnetic.
