2027 Ding Wei Year: plenty of fire, all of it pointing inward

2027 is a Ding Wei year — the stem Ding (Yin Fire) over the branch Wei (dry Earth) — the year of the Goat, with the na yin Heavenly River Water. It runs from Li Chun on 2027-02-04 to 2028-02-04, not from Chinese New Year on 2027-02-06. Ding is a candle rather than the sun, Wei is parched ground and a fire store, and the annual star entering the centre is 9 Purple — three things pointing the same way: the fire is strong, and none of it shines outward.

The year does not start at Chinese New Year

Almost every English-language zodiac page counts the animal year from Chinese New Year. BaZi does not. It counts from Li Chun, the first of the twenty-four solar terms — and in 2027 those two dates are two days apart: Li Chun falls on 2027-02-04 and Chinese New Year on 2027-02-06.

So anyone born on 4 or 5 February 2027 is a Goat by BaZi reckoning while a Chinese New Year-based calendar still calls them a Horse. If you have ever had two zodiac sites disagree about your sign, this is usually why. Everything on these pages uses the Li Chun boundary, which is the one a chart calculator uses.

What kind of year 2027 is: three threads

One: Ding is a candle, not the sun

The stem Ding is Yin Fire. The classical contrast is simple: Bing is the sun — it lights whatever it falls on, indiscriminately. Ding is a lamp: a small circle of light, but it reaches inside rooms and picks out detail. So the heat of a Ding year is not broadcast heat. It is focused heat — attention and resources concentrate on a few visible points, and everywhere else gets darker.

That is a different feel from 2026, a Bing Wu year. Bing Wu was Yang Fire over Yang Fire: loud, outward, everything argued in public. Ding Wei is Yin Fire sitting on an earth store — the fire has been put away. The same things may still be burning; they have simply moved below the surface.

Two: Wei is a fire store, and it is dry

The branch Wei is Earth, and it hides three stems: Ji Earth (its main qi), Ding Fire and Yi Wood. Ji is garden soil, Ding is the fire it carries, Yi is the grass buried in it. So Wei is not moist, fertile ground — it is sun-baked ground. In BaZi terms, dry earth.

Wei is also a fire store: Si-Wu-Wei form the southern Fire trio, and Wei is the last month of summer. Fire arriving at Wei does not go out; it is packed into the store and keeps smouldering. That sets the basic texture of the year — not a flare, but sustained heat, not enough moisture, things cracking from dryness.

The single most useful sentence for a chart reader: Ding Wei supplies almost no Water. If your chart is already short of Water, or needs Water to temper it, this year costs you more than most. If your chart is cold and damp and needs Fire and Earth to warm it, this is a rare tailwind.

Three: the ruling star goes to the centre — and drains there

We are in Period 9 of the Lower Era (2024–2043), whose ruling star is 9 Purple, Fire. In 2027 the annual star entering the centre palace is 9 Purple itself — the ruling star returning to the middle of the nine palaces, which happens twice in a twenty-year period.

But "entering the centre" is not the same as "at its strongest". The centre palace is Earth; 9 Purple is Fire. Fire feeding Earth is a drain — the star is giving its strength away. In plain terms: this year the ruling energy does not shine outward, it sinks into structure. Institutions, foundations and things already built benefit. Anything that lives on volume and visibility will find the year unusually heavy going.

Stack the three together and you have the whole year: plenty of fire, all of it pointing inward.

Who offends Tai Sui this year

Measured against the year branch Wei, 4 signs form a clash, punishment, harm, destruction or identity with it: Rat (Harm), Ox (Clash), Goat (Own year), Dog (Punishment + Destruction). On the other side, Rabbit (trine), Snake (directional trio), Horse (six harmony + directional trio), Pig (trine) are in the year's own group and do not have to argue with the weather.

But remember: these five relationships describe mechanics, not verdicts. A clash is displacement, a punishment is entanglement, a harm is attrition out of sight, a destruction is a structure losing its support — and each has a version that works in your favour. The Ding Wei year does not begin on 1 January or at Chinese New Year but at Li Chun on 2027-02-04, and the months inside it are cut by solar terms too — twelve of them.

The last three Ding Wei years: 1967, 1907, 1847

Stem-branch combinations recur every sixty years. Putting the last three side by side is not proof of anything — it is a way of giving the words "dry, focused, turned inward" some historical texture.

  Famine, war and a landmark labour-protection law in the same twelve months. The two faces of a Ding Wei year — things cracking from dryness, and things being fenced in — arrive together.

Putting three Ding Wei years side by side is not an argument that Ding Wei years are violent. A sixty-year stem-branch match is far easier to retrofit than a hundred-and-eighty-year period. Every single year in history contains a war, a political crisis and a famine somewhere; being able to find one proves nothing about prediction.
