BaZi Timing for Changing Jobs: Which Years Bring Change, and Whether It Goes Your Way
People thinking of a new job usually ask, "Is this a good year to move?" BaZi really answers two questions: does this year carry a signal of change, and will a move have the wind behind it or against it. This page takes the two apart and includes a lookup tool that lists your next ten years from your birth date. For which kind of work suits you, see BaZi and career; this page is only about timing.
For a job change, BaZi asks two things: is there movement, and which way does it go?
A common saying goes, "The Traveling Horse is moving this year, so it is a good time to change jobs." That is only half the story. We split it into two questions and look at each year separately:
- Does the year carry a signal of movement? The three most often used: the year clashes your Month Pillar (the Month Pillar stands for your work and your place in society), the year brings your Traveling Horse, or you start a new luck pillar. See what "movement" means.
- Is the wind behind you or against you? Check whether the year’s stem and branch are favorable or unfavorable for you, and which Ten God they are: Officer stars mostly concern your position and your boss, Output stars your wish to go your own way and show what you can do, Wealth stars income and opportunity. Only the two together give a fuller picture. A signal in a favorable year is a time to go looking for openings; a signal in an unfavorable year usually means change arrives on someone else’s terms, so prepare; a favorable year with no signal is a time to push for more where you already are.
Three kinds of movement, and how common each is

Put the three together and people average 2.84 years with a signal of movement in any ten; more than half have exactly three, and nobody has none. In other words, "there is movement this year" is ordinary. It says change is more likely and decisions come more easily this year, not that you will certainly change jobs.
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn at random, alternating male and female), 16,802 charts in all, and looked at the ten years 2026 to 2035. These are how often the signals appear; they say nothing about whether any real person will change jobs.

Uses Gregorian birth dates, with the day changing at 11 p.m. Each BaZi year begins at Start of Spring, so January to early February still counts as the previous year.

- His baseline: Ming is a strong Yi Wood Day Master; favorable FireMetalEarth, unfavorable WaterWood. From 2021 to 2030 he is in the Geng-Zi luck pillar, and in 2031 he moves into Ji-Hai.
- 2026–2029: four favorable years in a row, but no signal of movement. Years like these are for pushing for more in his current company: in 2028 and 2029 the year’s branch is his Direct Officer and then his Seven Killings, both favorable, the right moment to go for a promotion or a bigger remit.
- 2030, Geng-Xu: the year clashes his Jia-Chen Month Pillar on both stem and branch (a full clash), the clearest movement of the decade, and both stem and branch are favorable. If he means to change jobs, this is the smoothest year to do it.
- 2031, Xin-Hai: a new luck pillar begins. The stem is Seven Killings and favorable, the branch Direct Resource and unfavorable: a mixed year. Hai Water, the branch of his new Ji-Hai luck pillar, is unfavorable for him, so the next few years run less smoothly than the ones before.
- 2032 onward: mostly Water and Wood years, all unfavorable for him, and no signal of movement. If he has already moved into the right role, this stretch is about holding steady.
Three common misunderstandings
A Traveling Horse year means you will change jobs.
The Traveling Horse turns up in 13.2% of years, so most people meet it a little more than once a decade. It only means movement comes easily that year: business travel, moving house, switching departments and changing employers all count. Whether to move depends on whether the year is favorable for you.
You must not change jobs in a year you offend Tai Sui.

In a Hurting Officer Meets Direct Officer year, you will clash with your boss.
About 27.2% of people have a Direct Officer on a stem in their birth chart, and every one of them meets a Hurting Officer year within ten years, 1.82 on average. Does a Traveling Horse year mean I should change jobs?
Not necessarily. The Traveling Horse means movement comes easily: business travel, moving house and switching departments all count, and about 13.2% of years carry one. Whether to move depends on whether the year is favorable for you and on your actual circumstances.
Can I change jobs in a year with no movement?
Yes; the chart simply gives you no extra push. A favorable year with no signal is a good time to go for a promotion, a raise or a new assignment where you are. If you do want to move, taking longer to prepare does no harm.
Does the BaZi year start on January 1?
No. The BaZi year changes at Start of Spring (around February 4 each year), so a birth or a decision in January or early February still falls in the previous year.
