BaZi for Moving Abroad: Are You Suited to It, Where Should You Go, and Which Years Bring a Move?
Studying abroad, an overseas posting, emigrating, or just a new city: sooner or later someone asks, "Does my BaZi say I should go abroad?" BaZi can answer three things: how restless you are by nature, which directions and climates you feel at home in, and which years are more likely to bring a move. This page goes through all three and includes a lookup tool where you can enter your birth date.
Three things BaZi looks at for moving abroad
- How restless you are by nature. Does your birth chart hold your Traveling Horse, how many of the four Horse branches (Yin, Shen, Si, Hai) appear, and do your Year, Month and Day pillars clash with one another? The more of these three hold, the more your chart reads as "hard to keep in one place, better off on the move." See are you born to roam.
- Where you feel at home. Each favorable element points to a direction (Wood east, Fire south, Earth the center, Metal west, Water north), and Climate Adjustment says whether a warm or a cool place suits you better. These directions come from your favorable elements; they are not the house-facing "lucky directions" of Eight Mansions feng shui (Eight Mansions). See which direction and climate suit you.
- Which years bring a move. A year that brings your Traveling Horse, a year whose branch clashes your Day Branch (the Day pillar stands for you and your home), or a year when you change luck pillars; then check whether that year is favorable for you. See which years suit a move abroad.
Restless charts are more common than you might think
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn at random, alternating male and female), 16,802 charts in all; the timing figures cover the ten years 2026 to 2035. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about whether any real person will move or emigrate.
"Born with the Traveling Horse" sounds special, but more than one person in three has it. Only 6.1% have all three restless signs; at the other end, 37.7% have none. Most people sit in between: some pull toward elsewhere, but no compulsion to leave.
Climate matters more than direction
A direction depends on where you start from; the climate you live in is something you feel every day. We read it through Climate Adjustment. Someone born in the cold season whose chart runs cold and lacks Fire usually does better somewhere warm and sunny; a chart that runs hot and dry and lacks Water points the other way, toward somewhere cool and humid. About 27.8% of people have a clear preference like this; for another 41.4%, warm and cold are roughly balanced and the climate hardly matters.

Ming: a chart with little need to roam
Ming | Born April 16, 1987, Hai hour (9–11 p.m.), male
- Restless signs: his four branches are Mao, Chen, Wei and Hai, so Hai is his only Horse branch. His Traveling Horse is Si, which is not in his chart, and none of his Year, Month and Day pillars clash. Not one of the three signs holds.
- Climate: born in the Chen month, his chart is roughly balanced between warm and cold, so where he lives makes little difference.
- Timing: over the next ten years, only 2031 (a new luck pillar) and 2033 (the year clashes his Day Branch) carry move signals, and both are mixed years.
- How to read it: Ming is better off putting down roots in one place and building up his network and assets. Moving abroad is not ruled out; his chart simply does not give him an extra push, and he need not force it because someone says "you will only make it if you leave."

- Her baseline: Qing is a weak Geng Metal Day Master; favorable EarthMetalFire, unfavorable WaterWood. She was born in the Hai month, the start of winter, so her chart as a whole runs cold.
- Restless signs: her Year Branch Si belongs to the Si-You-Chou group, whose Traveling Horse is Hai, and her Month Branch is exactly Hai. She has two Horse branches, Si and Hai, and her Year Branch Si clashes her Month Branch Hai. All three signs hold, which is true of only 6.1% of people.
- Direction and climate: her favorable elements are Earth, Metal and Fire, pointing to the center, west and south. Born at the start of winter and short of Fire, she will be more comfortable somewhere warm and sunny.
- Timing: 2026 clashes her Day Branch and 2030 starts a new luck pillar, and both years are favorable: good years to relocate or go abroad. 2034 is a Traveling Horse year but unfavorable, so a move then is likely to be harder going.
Three common misunderstandings
If you have the Traveling Horse, you have to go abroad to succeed.
About 36.7% of people have their Traveling Horse in their four pillars. It only means you move easily and suit work and a life with motion in it: business travel, sales, frequent house moves all count. You can put that energy into your work without ever leaving the country.
Move toward your favorable direction and your luck will change.
Direction is a minor aid, far weaker than your luck pillars and years, your work and the way you live. Rather than agonize over compass points, check whether the place has the climate, the jobs and the cost of living that suit you.
Your favorable direction is the same as your Eight Mansions lucky direction.

Look for your Traveling Horse in the birth chart, count how many of the four Horse branches (Yin, Shen, Si, Hai) appear, and check whether the Year, Month and Day pillars clash. The more of these hold, the more you lean toward making your life elsewhere. Then check your favorable directions and Climate Adjustment to see what kind of place suits you.
Is the Traveling Horse rare?
No. In our sample about 36.7% of people have their own Traveling Horse in their four pillars; only 6.1% have all three signs (the Horse, the Horse branches and a pillar clash).
Where do I measure my favorable direction from?
From where you live now. Direction is only a minor aid; the climate, work and living conditions of a place matter more than the compass point.
Does it work the same if I was born in the Southern Hemisphere?
The four pillars are cast as usual, but warm and cold are reversed for Climate Adjustment, so your favorable elements may differ. In our sample, recalculating the same chart for the Southern Hemisphere changed the favorable elements for about 11.3% of people; see which direction and climate suit you.
