San Yuan Jiu Yun: 180 Years to a Cycle, and We Are in Period 9
San Yuan Jiu Yun is how the Xuan Kong tradition reads the climate of an era: three sixty-year rounds, 180 years in all, cut into nine periods of twenty years, each carrying one star of the Luoshu square and one trigram. The current cycle begins in 1864, and at Lichun on 4 February 2024 the world moved out of Period 8 Gen Earth and into Period 9 Li Fire (2024–2043). How the cycle is built: 60 × 3 = 180 years
The skeleton has only three layers:
Ten Heavenly Stems against twelve Earthly Branches come back into alignment after exactly sixty years. Everything else is built on that number.
Three sixty-year rounds make one full cycle: an Upper, Middle and Lower Era of 60 years each, 180 years in total, and then it begins again.
Each Era splits into three, so one Period is twenty years and the three Eras hold nine of them — each assigned a star of the Luoshu square and a trigram. This is the "period" people mean.
So, in one line: San Yuan Jiu Yun is three sixty-year rounds — 180 years — cut into nine periods of twenty, each with its own star, trigram and element. The current cycle starts from 1864 (a jiazi year); Period 9 began at Lichun 2024 and ends in 2043, after which 2044 restarts from Period 1.
Three things people get wrong about the changeover
Period 9 began on 4 February 2024, at Lichun. Chinese metaphysics dates its years by solar terms; neither New Year’s Day nor the first day of the lunar year is the boundary.
The new energy is visible in the closing years of the old period (ChatGPT launched in the last full year of Period 8) and the old order lingers into the new one. Read the trend, not the day.

At Lichun on 4 February 2024 the world moved from Period 8 Gen Earth into Period 9 Li Fire. The two are close to opposites, which is one reason so many people have felt since 2024 that what used to work has quietly stopped working:

How to read these matches without fooling yourself
This is the most important section on the page. Read it and the timeline above becomes worth something.
Any twenty years will produce events that fit some trigram. Knowing the answer before you look for proof makes the hit rate spectacular. A match is not a forecast.
Events that fit the symbolism get cited over and over; the ones that do not — and there are far more of them — never come up. Every neat table you see has already been filtered.
It describes the mood of twenty years, not what happens in your household this year. Using Period 9 to work out whether you will get a raise is using a telescope as a microscope.
So why is it still worth reading? Because the real value of San Yuan Jiu Yun is not divination — it is that it hands you a twenty-year unit. Twenty years is roughly how long it takes a way of doing things to emerge, become standard, and stop working. Property had its twenty-year run; so did social media. Once you are used to looking back at a twenty-year scale, you are far less likely to mistake "what has worked for the last decade" for "what works permanently". That is why an old system is still being read.
One honest note: background music for an era, not a verdict on you
What San Yuan Jiu Yun can tell you is which kinds of method cost less effort in these twenty years and which resources are worth more. It cannot supply causes and it cannot supply personal answers — inside the same Period 9 some people rise on the updraft and some burn out, and the difference lies in individual charts and luck pillars, not in the era.

It is a system that divides time into a repeating 180-year cycle. The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches realign every 60 years, which is one jiazi; three of those make the "Three Eras" — Upper, Middle and Lower, of 60 years each. Each era is cut into three twenty-year blocks called periods, giving nine in total, and each period carries one of the nine Luoshu stars (1 White through 9 Purple) with its trigram and element, describing the character of those twenty years. The current cycle starts from 1864 and finishes in 2043, after which it begins again.
What period are we in now, and when does it change?
We are in Period 9, Li Fire, which began at Lichun on 4 February 2024 and runs to 2043. Before it was Period 8, Gen Earth (2004–2023). Note that the changeover falls on Lichun (Start of Spring), not 1 January and not Lunar New Year — Chinese metaphysics always dates its years by solar terms. What does Period 9 Li Fire mean, and how does it differ from Period 8?
Period 9 carries the Li trigram: fire, light, electricity, the eye, the middle daughter, civilisation — mapping to AI and compute, power and energy, image and content, the beauty economy, and work concerned with mind and spirit. Period 8 carried Gen: mountain, earth, the hand, the youngest son, stopping — mapping to property, held assets and boundaries. Their logic is close to opposite: Period 8 rewarded buying something immovable and waiting for it to appreciate, Period 9 rewards making things shine, be seen and keep moving. That is one reason so many people have found their old approach harder going since 2024.
Are San Yuan Jiu Yun and BaZi luck pillars the same thing?
No, and the scales are completely different. San Yuan Jiu Yun is a shared climate: one period lasts twenty years and the whole world changes over together. BaZi luck pillars are personal: one pillar lasts ten years, derived from your month pillar and your sex, and everyone’s are different. That is why the same Period 9 carries some people and drains others — what decides your outcome is your own pillar and what your chart needs, with the period only supplying background. To read them together, you first have to tell them apart.
Is San Yuan Jiu Yun the same as Flying Star feng shui?
Related, but at different layers. San Yuan Jiu Yun handles time: which period we are in, and which element the next twenty years lean towards. Flying Star takes that time parameter and applies it to the directions of a specific building, working out which sector is favourable during that stretch — that is the practical layer of house feng shui. Think of San Yuan Jiu Yun as the clock and Flying Star as using the clock to read a house. Many familiar phrases, such as the 5 Yellow affliction and the 2 Black sickness star, belong to the Flying Star analysis of directions; transplanting them into "that period was twenty unlucky years" is a scale error.
Do historical events really line up with every period?
A great many do, but three things have to be faced honestly. First, retrofitting: knowing the symbolism before you go looking for evidence makes the hit rate very high. Second, survivorship bias: the events that fit get quoted repeatedly while the far larger number that do not are never mentioned. Third, scale error: this describes the mood of twenty years and cannot be used to read a person’s coming year. What the system is genuinely good for is supplying a twenty-year unit — roughly the time it takes a way of doing things to emerge, become standard, and stop working.
