Planets in Signs: Nine Planets in the Twelve Signs
When people say "I'm a Leo", they mean only where the Sun was. A birth chart has ten planets, and each one sits in a sign: the Moon for emotions and security, Mercury for thinking and talking, Venus for love, Mars for action… The same person can have the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Cancer and Venus in Pisces. Below, the placements are grouped by planet, and every combination has its own reading.
What the planet says and what the sign says
In a chart, the planet is the "what", the sign is the "how", and the house is "where in life". Venus stands for love and beauty: in Scorpio it loves the Scorpio way, deep, focused and all-in; in Gemini it loves through conversation, curiosity and novelty. This section covers the first two (planet × sign); for houses see the in-depth chart reading.
The Sun in the signs is simply the twelve zodiac signs; see the zodiac signs.
Personal, social and generational planets
The planets move at very different speeds, and that decides whether a placement describes you or your generation. Our calculations:
| Planet | Type | Full circuit | Time in each sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moon | personal planet | about 27.6 days | about 2.3 days on average |
| Mercury | personal planet | about 0.8 years | about 25 days on average |
| Venus | personal planet | about 0.9 years | about 29 days on average |
| Mars | personal planet | about 1.7 years | about 53 days on average |
| Jupiter | social planet | about 12 years | about 1 years on average |
| Saturn | social planet | about 29 years | about 2.4 years on average |
| Uranus | generational planet | about 84 years | about 7 years on average |
| Neptune | generational planet | about 164 years | about 13.7 years on average |
| Pluto | generational planet | about 244 years | about 20.3 years on average |
- Personal planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars): they change sign quickly, so even people born the same year often differ. They say the most about your own personality and habits.
- Social planets (Jupiter, Saturn): one to two and a half years in a sign, so classmates often share them. They describe how you meet growth, responsibility and social rules.
- Generational planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto): they stay for years or decades, so they describe a whole generation first. Their house and their aspects to your personal planets show how much they shape you.
Nine planets × twelve signs
Each card opens the full reading for that combination. Cards show the essential dignity where there is one, otherwise the element.

Jupiter: growth, belief, opportunity and generosity
Saturn: responsibility, boundaries, fear and the lessons that take years to learn
Uranus: breakthroughs, independence and sudden change
Neptune: ideals, imagination, spirituality and blurred boundaries
Pluto: power, crisis, obsession and deep transformation
Domicile, exaltation, detriment and fall
Traditional astrology holds that each planet is especially at ease in some signs and awkward in others. Domicile is the sign it rules, its own home; exaltation is where it is the honoured guest; detriment is opposite its domicile and fall opposite its exaltation. Detriment and fall are not bad luck: the planet has to work in another way, and people often build unusual strengths there. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered in modern times, so they have only the modern rulerships and no traditional exaltation or fall.
| Planet | Domicile | Exaltation | Detriment | Fall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo | Aries | Aquarius | Libra |
| Moon | Cancer | Taurus | Capricorn | Scorpio |
| Mercury | Gemini, Virgo | Virgo | Sagittarius, Pisces | Pisces |
| Venus | Taurus, Libra | Pisces | Aries, Scorpio | Virgo |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio | Capricorn | Taurus, Libra | Cancer |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces | Cancer | Gemini, Virgo | Capricorn |
| Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius | Libra | Cancer, Leo | Aries |
| Uranus | Aquarius | — | Leo | — |
| Neptune | Pisces | — | Virgo | — |
| Pluto | Scorpio | — | Taurus | — |
From our engine's traditional and modern rulership tables; Mercury is both in domicile and exalted in Virgo, and both in detriment and fall in Pisces.
A straight word: one planet is only part of a chart
This page describes what the astrological tradition usually says about this planet in this sign. It is not a scientific finding. People with the same placement have different Suns, Moons, rising signs and other planets, and the house this planet falls in and the aspects it makes can change it a great deal. If parts of it do not sound like you, that is normal; a full chart is far more accurate. Everything here is for reference and entertainment. Planets in signs: common questions
How do I find my planets' signs?
Enter your birth date, time and place in the birth chart to see all ten planets with their signs and houses. The Moon can change sign within a day, so it needs a birth time; for the other planets the birth date is usually enough.
What is the difference between a planet's sign and its house?
The sign describes how the planet expresses itself; the house describes the area of life where it acts. Venus in Scorpio loves deeply and intensely; Venus in the tenth house shows its charm through career and public image. Read them together; houses need a birth time.
Why is the Sun not listed here?
The Sun in the signs is the ordinary zodiac sign, and each of the twelve signs already has its own full page. The tables here link straight to them.
Do the generational planets mean anything personally?
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in a sign for years, so their sign first describes a generation. How much they shape you depends on the house they fall in and on close aspects to your Sun, Moon, Ascendant or personal planets.
Is a planet in detriment or fall a bad sign?
No. It means the planet and the sign keep different rhythms, so the planet has to take a longer way round. Many people build their most distinctive strengths in exactly these placements.
