BaZi for Partners and Coworkers: Which Ten God Are They, and Is Their Element Favorable for You?
Some people make the same job feel easy; with others, everything sticks. BaZi work compatibility does not hand out a score. It answers three concrete questions: which Ten God the other person is to you (who can lead whom, who has authority over whom), whether the element they bring is one you need, and whether your Day and Month pillars combine or clash. This page explains all three and includes a lookup tool where you can enter two birth dates.
Three things BaZi checks between two coworkers
Love compatibility asks whether two people can build a life together. Work compatibility asks something narrower: when these two are on the same job, does the work get easier or harder? We do not hand out a single "compatibility score." We lay out three things that can be looked up and checked.
- Ten God roles: which Ten God the other person is to you. Compare the two Day Masters (the Heavenly Stem of each person’s birth day). If they are your Direct Officer, they carry authority over you; if they are your Eating God, you can lead them. This sets which way the lead naturally runs.
- Element fit: is the element they bring one of your favorable elements? Every chart needs different elements (see favorable elements). If the other person’s Day Master element is favorable for you, working with them comes easily; if it is unfavorable, it costs you more effort.
- Stem-branch interaction: do the Day and Month pillars combine or clash? The Day pillar is the self and shows how you get along one-on-one; the Month pillar is often read as the working environment and habits. A Combination points to easy chemistry; a Clash means different rhythms and head-on collisions.
Between two people there are only six Ten God pairings
Ten Gods run both ways, and the two sides always match. If you control the other person’s element, they are your Wealth and you are their Officer; if they produce your element, they are your Resource and you are their Output. Direct and indirect match too: if they are your Direct Wealth, you are always their Direct Officer. So the ten Ten Gods only ever form six relationships between two people:

Put another way, every pair of people has a direction: either level (Friend, Rob Wealth), or one feeds the other (Output and Resource), or one directs the other (Wealth and Officer). Once you see the direction, a lot of "why does this person always treat me like that?" starts to make sense. Each of the ten roles is covered in which Ten God the other person is.
Element fit: most pairs benefit one side
Across 16,802 random pairs, the other person’s Day Master element was favorable for you 47.1% of the time and unfavorable 46.1% of the time: close to a coin toss. Put both directions together and you get this:
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn at random), 16,802 charts in all, then paired them off at random into 16,802 pairs. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about whether any two real people will work well together.
The most common outcome is neither "great match" nor "bad match" but one side gaining while the other gives more. That is no reason to avoid the pairing, but it is worth knowing which way the effort flows. The side that gives more needs something back, such as a clearer split of duties or better terms, for the relationship to last.
Also, reading the other person’s Day Master element and reading the most common element in their chart agree only about half the time. The first is closer to "who this person is"; the second is closer to "the environment and way of working they bring." The lookup tool lists both.
Chinese zodiac compatibility has nothing to do with it
Plenty of people check zodiac signs before choosing a business partner: a Horse and a Rat clash, so can they work together? We pulled out the pairs whose zodiac animals (the year branch) clash or combine and compared them:

The three groups barely differ. The zodiac animal is one character of the year pillar and mostly speaks to family background and the generation around you. Whether two people actually work well together shows in the Day and Month pillars and in the favorable elements of the whole chart. Two people whose signs clash can still make an excellent team.

Uses Gregorian birth dates, with the day changing at 11 p.m. You can leave the other person’s birth hour blank; without the hour pillar the element reading is rougher.
A worked example: Ming and his coworker Mei
Every example in this cluster uses the same person, "Ming," paired with four different people he works with, so you can compare as you go.

- The two charts: Ming: Yi Wood Day Master, strong; favorable FireMetalEarth, unfavorable WaterWood. Mei is a weak Ji Earth Day Master; favorable FireEarth, unfavorable MetalWaterWood.
- Ten God roles: Yi Wood controls Ji Earth, and both are yin stems, so Mei is Ming’s Indirect Wealth and Ming is Mei’s Seven Killings. Ming can put Mei to work, and she will do what he hands her; but in Mei’s eyes, Ming is the one piling on the pressure.
- Element fit: Mei’s Day Master is Earth, one of Ming’s favorable elements, so working with her comes easily to him. Ming’s Day Master is Wood, which is unfavorable for Mei. A textbook one-sided pairing.
- Stem-branch interaction: their Day Branches, Wei and Mao, are two of the three branches of the Hai-Mao-Wei Wood bureau, so one-on-one they have an easy understanding. Their Month Branches, Chen and Xu, clash: their working habits and pace are far apart, one in a hurry, the other wanting to go at her own speed.
- How to use it: Ming is the one who gains here, so he should give Mei a clear scope and real recognition, not just a stream of tasks. Agree on the workflow first, and the Chen-Xu gap in pace does not have to turn into conflict.
Three common misunderstandings
If two people do not get along, their charts must clash.
Only 46.8% of pairs have no Combination, Clash, Punishment, Harm or Break at all between their Day Branches, so more than half of all pairs have some interaction there. A clash does not mean you cannot work together, and a combination does not promise a smooth ride; these describe the texture of the relationship, not its outcome.
Choose a partner whose elements fill in what you are missing.
What you want filled is your favorable elements, not whatever element is missing. The missing one is sometimes unfavorable, and working with someone full of it drains you further. Check your own favorable elements first, then see what the other person brings; see favorable-element match.
They are my Seven Killings, so they will hurt me.
Seven Killings means pressure and demands, not harm. A strong Day Master often needs exactly that push to deliver. What deserves attention is a weak Day Master under Seven Killings pressure; then look for a Resource-type person or method to cushion it.

Whether a working relationship holds up comes down to communication, a sensible split of duties, and both people doing what they said they would. What BaZi can do is flag early where things are likely to snag: who tends to override whom, where money and credit are likely to cause friction, how far apart your working rhythms are. Once you know, talk it through and put it in writing; do not use it to decide whether someone is worth hiring. Can BaZi tell whether two people will work well together?
It can show tendencies. Compare the two Day Masters to see which Ten God the other person is to you (who leads, who supports), then check whether their element is one of your favorable elements and whether your Day and Month pillars combine or clash. It describes the direction of the relationship and where it is likely to snag, not whether the partnership will succeed.
How is work compatibility different from love compatibility?
Love compatibility asks whether two people can share a life, so it looks at the spouse palace, the spouse star and long-term living together. Work compatibility asks how the work gets divided: who leads, who gains, how money and credit are shared, and whether your working rhythms match.
Can I check without the other person’s birth hour?
Yes. The Ten God role uses only the Day Master, so no hour is needed, and the Day and Month pillar interactions are unaffected. Without the two characters of the hour pillar, the element count and favorable-element reading are rougher, so treat that part as a guide.
Can people whose zodiac signs clash go into business together?
No need to worry. In our sample, pairs whose zodiac animals clash fit both ways 26.0% of the time, about the same as the 23.2% for other pairs. The zodiac animal is one character of the year pillar; whether two people work well together shows in the Day and Month pillars and the favorable elements.
