BaZi Special Structures: The Few Charts Not Read by Strong or Weak
Nearly every BaZi chart is read by asking whether the Day Master is strong or weak, then supporting the weak and restraining the strong. These are ordinary structures. A small number of charts, though, are so extreme in strength, or have a Day Master so thoroughly combined away, that supporting and suppressing them in the usual way gets the answer wrong. The classics sort these charts into a class of their own: special structures (特殊格局), also called outer structures (外格).
The three kinds of special structure

How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all. Transformation and dominant-element structures were checked condition by condition against this site's rules; follow structures use the hard-evidence gate of our strength engine.
Near misses outnumber real cases several times over. That is exactly where special structures are most often misjudged: one condition short, and the classics mostly call the structure "broken," to be read as an ordinary chart by strength. We would rather err on the strict side, and the checker lists whether each condition is met.

Three common misunderstandings
A special structure means a life of great wealth and rank.
A special structure only changes how favorable elements are chosen; it says nothing about a good or bad life. A chart whose special structure holds can swing harder than an ordinary one when a luck period breaks it.
A weak enough Day Master is automatically a follow structure.
A follow structure needs a Day Master that is extremely weak and has no root and no Resource. A weak Day Master with a little root in the branches, or Resource on the stems, cannot follow; it is simply weak. In our sample, only 0.76% of charts are follow structures on hard evidence.
Any stem combination makes a transformation structure.
About 18.7% of charts have the day stem combining with an adjacent stem, but only 0.05% actually transform. Most are "combined but not transformed": the Day Master is tied up, nothing more.

In our sample, charts that meet the classical conditions for any special structure are just 0.98% of more than sixteen thousand. It is common to hear "very weak" or "there is a stem combination" taken straight to a follow or transformation structure, and that is far too loose. A special structure changes how favorable elements are chosen, not whether a life is good or bad; get it wrong and the favorable set is turned upside down.
