Solar Return Chart: Your Birthday Moment, and the Focus of the Year
Around each birthday the Sun comes back to the exact spot it occupied when you were born. A chart cast for that instant is your solar return. It does not replace your natal chart; it is a yearly edition of it, showing where your attention is drawn between this birthday and the next. Enter your birth details and pick a year to calculate it.

Enter your birth date, time and place, then pick a year. If you are somewhere else for that birthday, add the city (leave blank to use your birthplace). The tool finds the exact return moment, draws the chart and reads the Sun house, Ascendant, Moon and angular planets in order. Everything is calculated in your browser and never uploaded.
A birth time is required. The return moment is when the Sun reaches its natal tropical longitude, found by bisection to one second; Placidus houses. Enter the local clock time from your birth certificate; daylight saving time is handled automatically.
What a solar return is
Your natal chart is the sky at the moment you were born and never changes. The Sun travels once around the zodiac each year, returning to its birth position around your birthday; a chart cast for that moment and place is the solar return. The Sun sits exactly where it did at birth, but the other planets, the Ascendant and the houses differ each year, which is why astrologers use it to see how "this year's you" differs from the usual you.
The return is not always on your birthday
A year is about 365.2422 days, not exactly 365, so the return moment drifts later each year. From 701 people born in Taipei, with five consecutive returns each:
Born in Taipei 1960–2005, one day in 24 with the hour drawn at random, 701 people; returns at ages 20–24, in Taipei time.
That drift has a side effect: each year the return happens almost six hours later, a quarter turn of the sky, so the return Sun usually moves back about three houses a year (exactly three houses back in 79.8% of cases in our sample, otherwise two or four), cycling round in roughly four years. That is astronomy, not a four-year cycle of fortune.
How to read a solar return, in order of importance
- The Sun's house: the most used factor. The Sun marks where your attention goes this year.
- The return Ascendant: the tone of the year and the impression you give.
- The Moon's sign and house: emotional needs, and where daily life tends to fluctuate.
- Planets on the angles: planets within 5° of the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC become headline themes.
- Where the return Ascendant falls in your natal chart: which natal area the year starts from.
| Sun in the | Focus of the year |
|---|---|
| 1st house | you are the main character this year. A good time to reposition yourself, change your image or start a personal project; your own choices carry extra weight. |
| 2nd house | the focus is income, savings and self-worth: rethinking money, wanting an extra income stream, or getting clear on what you are worth. |
| 3rd house | a busy year of learning, communicating, writing and short trips, with more contact with siblings, neighbors and classmates. |
| 4th house | the focus is home: moving, renovating, family time, caring for parents or sorting out family matters, and your inner sense of security. |
| 5th house | a year for what brings you joy: romance, creative work, hobbies and fun, and traditionally matters involving children. |
| 6th house | the focus is daily work and routine: changes in your tasks, better workflows, a reset of daily habits; often a busy year. |
| 7th house | one-to-one relationships take center stage: partner, business partner or key collaborator; how a relationship develops is often the story of the year. |
| 8th house | shared resources come into play: loans, insurance, investments, family money, often alongside a deep shift in outlook. |
| 9th house | a year of widening horizons: travel abroad, further study, certifications, or a new understanding of your beliefs. |
| 10th house | career and public role are in focus: promotion, a change of direction, bigger responsibilities or public visibility. |
| 11th house | friends, communities and teams matter more; new connections bring opportunities, and it is a good time to rethink your vision for the future. |
| 12th house | an inward year, good for rest, reflection, wrapping things up and behind-the-scenes preparation; much of the payoff shows up the following year. |
Birthplace or where you are?
This is the biggest difference between schools. The return moment is the same everywhere, but the Ascendant and houses depend on the location. Three common practices:
- Wherever you are on the birthday: what most modern astrologers use, which is why some people travel for their birthday to "change" their solar return.
- Where you live: if you happen to be traveling, some astrologers still use the city your life is based in.
- Always the birthplace: the more traditional view, treating the return as an extension of the natal chart.
Our tool defaults to the birthplace and lets you enter another city. How much does it change? For the same return moment, moving from Taipei to Kaohsiung (about 300 km south) leaves the Sun in the same house for 95.6% of people (the Ascendant moves 1.3° on average); moving to New York, the Sun changes house for virtually everyone.
Example: one moment, two solar returns
Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, 7:24 p.m., in Honolulu (birth certificate). His 2008 solar return, cast for his birthplace and for Chicago, where he lived:
| Cast for | Local time | Ascendant | Sun | Moon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honolulu (birthplace) | August 4, 03:50 | Cancer | 2nd house | 3rd house |
| Chicago (home at the time) | August 4, 08:50 | Virgo | 11th house | 1st house |
The same instant gives Cancer rising with the Sun in the 2nd house in Honolulu, but Virgo rising with the Sun in the 11th in Chicago: two different stories for the year. We show this to illustrate the effect of location, not to argue from hindsight that one of them was "right".
Solar returns, transits and progressions
| Method | How it works | What it shows | Time scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transits | Today's planets laid over the natal chart | Where outside events and pressures come from | Slow-planet aspects last months to a year or two |
| Solar return | A new chart each year for the moment the Sun returns to its birth position | The themes and tone of the year | One chart per year |
| Secondary progressions | The sky N days after birth = age N | Inner growth and life stages | Progressed Moon changes sign about every 2.3 years; progressed Sun about every 30 |
A straight word: a solar return is a map of the year's themes, not a forecast
The return moment can be calculated to the second, but how to read it varies: whether to cast it for your birthplace or where you are, whether to overlay it on the natal chart, what orbs to use. It is also very sensitive to birth time: in our calculations a one-hour error in birth time moves the return Ascendant by 15.1° on average, and changes its sign for 49.2% of people. Check your birth time first, and treat the result as a way into thinking about the year, not a prediction. Look at the year from another angle
Secondary progressions describe your inner life stage: the progressed Moon changes theme every two years or so, and the progressed lunation cycle runs about thirty.
Solar return FAQ
How is a solar return different from a natal chart?
The natal chart is the sky at birth and never changes; a solar return is the sky at the moment each year when the Sun returns to its birth position. The Sun is in the same place, but the other planets, the Ascendant and the houses change every year.
Do I need a birth time for a solar return?
Yes. Without it the return moment can be off by up to half a day and every house changes. In our calculations a one-hour error moves the return Ascendant by 15.1° on average and changes its sign for 49.2% of people.
Why is my solar return not on my birthday?
A year is about 365.2422 days, so the return drifts about 5 h 49 min later each year and a leap year pulls it back a day. In our sample 67% fall on the calendar birthday; the rest fall the day before or after.
I will be abroad on my birthday. Which city should I use?
Schools differ. Most modern astrologers use where you are at the moment of the return; others use the birthplace or your home. Our tool defaults to the birthplace and lets you enter another city to compare.
When does a solar return take effect?
From one return to the next, about a year. The 2027 solar return covers the year starting around your 2027 birthday and ending around your 2028 birthday, not January to December.
