New Moon and Full Moon Calendar: What Is the Moon Phase Today? Every Date, Time and Sign for 2026–2027

The Moon runs through one round of waxing and waning about every 29 and a half days. The New Moon opens the round, and astrologers like to set goals then; the Full Moon is its high point, a time to look back, harvest or let go. Below are the times calculated by our ephemeris engine, all given in UTC, with the sign the Moon was in at each one.

New Moon and Full Moon themes in the twelve signs

At a New Moon the Sun and Moon are in the same sign, so the Aries New Moon always falls in March or April; at a Full Moon the Moon is opposite the Sun, so the Aries Full Moon falls in September or October. Astrology reads the nature of the sign into the phase: the New Moon shows what is good to begin, the Full Moon what tends to surface.

SignNew Moon here (good things to begin)Full Moon here (what tends to surface)
AriesStart something for yourself: a new project, a new exercise routine. Get moving first and adjust as you go.You see how much ground you have been giving up in a relationship; time to speak up for yourself.
TaurusPut your money and material life in order: how you save, how you spend, the small things that make daily life steady. You look at where your sense of security really rests, and loosen your grip on what you hold too tightly.
GeminiLearn something new and talk to more people: sign up for a class, start writing, get back in touch. When there is too much information and your thoughts are scattered, pick out the one thing you actually mean to say.
CancerLook after home and family: tidy the place you live in and think about what gives you a sense of belonging. After a long push at work, feelings and the needs of home come to the surface.
LeoBring out the things you love: creative work, romance, play. Let yourself be seen. The wish to be recognized reaches its peak, and you also see your place within the group.
VirgoAdjust your daily rhythm: workflow, schedule, meals. Put some order into ordinary life.Details and practical realities crop up; check whether your ideals have touched the ground.
LibraTend your one-to-one relationships: talk through a partnership, mend a rift, practice hearing the other person out.An imbalance in a relationship is lit up; time to renegotiate giving and getting.
ScorpioFace the deep stuff: shared finances, trust, the knots you would rather not touch. A good time for a firm decision.Emotions you have kept pressed down well up; a good time to release a fixation and bring something to a close.
SagittariusLift your eyes to the horizon: plan a trip, further study, a different angle on your own life. The ideas you believe in are put to the test; separate hearsay from real conviction.
CapricornSet long-term goals: the direction of your career, the responsibilities you want to take on, groundwork for the you of a year from now.The results of your work and responsibilities show, and you can see whether this road is worth staying on.
AquariusConnect with like-minded people and communities: join a group, try a new approach, think about the future you want.Personal preference pulls against what the group expects; find your own view again.
PiscesSlow down and let things settle: sort through your feelings, spend time with art and quiet, let intuition speak.Built-up weariness and feeling need an outlet; put down the burdens that were never yours.

How long is one lunar cycle?

29.53 daysAverage time from one New Moon to the next (shortest 29.28, longest 29.83 days)
38 / 101Years with 13 Full Moons between 1950 and 2050 (the rest had 12)
13.9–15.6 daysTime from New Moon to Full Moon; it is not a fixed fifteen days
2.1 a yearAverage number of supermoons by our definition (0–3 a year)

Every New Moon and Full Moon from 1950 to 2050 calculated by our engine; years are counted in Taiwan time (UTC+8).

The synodic month averages 29.53 days, but each one is a different length, because the orbits of both the Moon and Earth are ellipses. A year of 365 days divided by 29.53 gives 12.4, so most years have 12 Full Moons and roughly one year in three has 13.

What are a Blue Moon and a Black Moon?

A calendar month usually has one Full Moon. Now and then a Full Moon falls right at the start of a month and another arrives at the end; the second one is popularly called a Blue Moon. By our calculation for 1950–2050, counted in Taiwan time (UTC+8), this happened 44 times, about once every 2.3 years; and because February is shorter than a lunation, 6 years had a February with no Full Moon at all (1953, 1991, 2010, 2018, 2029, 2037). In the same way, the second New Moon in a month is sometimes called a Black Moon. These are coincidences of the calendar: the Moon itself is no different and does not turn blue. The dates also shift with the time zone, so a Blue Moon in Taipei is not necessarily a Blue Moon in New York.

Astrology pays more attention to another case: two New Moons in a row in the same sign (the first at the very beginning of the sign, the second at the very end). Between 1950 and 2050 this happened 37 times, about once every 2.7 years.

What is New Moon wishing?

“New Moon wishes” are an astrological habit that caught on over the last few decades: in the period just after a New Moon, you write down a few things you want to begin or achieve. The usual method:

The benefit of the practice is that it has you review your goals once a month; it has no causal link with astronomy. The calendar above lists the exact New Moon times for anyone who wants to follow along.

Moon phases and the Chinese lunar calendar

The Chinese lunar calendar is built on the phases: the day of the New Moon is day 1, so every lunar month begins with a New Moon. The Full Moon, though, is not always on day 15: New Moon and Full Moon are 13.9–15.6 days apart, and the New Moon can happen at any hour of the day, so the Full Moon often falls on day 16 and occasionally on day 17. To convert a Western birthday to a lunar date, use the Chinese lunar calendar converter.

Eclipses and supermoons in 2026

When the Moon passes exactly between the Sun and Earth at a New Moon, there is a solar eclipse; when the Moon moves into Earth’s shadow at a Full Moon, there is a lunar eclipse. The eclipses of 2026 (UTC dates) are: Feb 17 (annular solar eclipse), Mar 3 (total lunar eclipse), Aug 12 (total solar eclipse), Aug 28 (partial lunar eclipse). Supermoon dates in 2026: Dec 24; in 2027: Jan 22. For the full eclipse data see the solar and lunar eclipse calendar.

A straight word: Moon phases are astronomy; wishes are custom

The moments of New Moons, Full Moons, solar eclipses and lunar eclipses are astronomical facts that can be calculated, and the dates on this page can be checked against an astronomical almanac. “New Moon wishes work better,” “the Full Moon is for letting go” and “eclipses are turning points of fate” are sayings from astrology and folk tradition, with no scientific research behind them. Treating the New Moon as a monthly reminder to sort out your goals, and the Full Moon as a point to look back and check, is a decent habit; there is no need to put off a decision because a certain day is an eclipse. This is custom with no scientific basis; the point is to review your goals once a month. The exact New Moon times are in the calendar above.

Is the Full Moon always on the 15th day of the lunar month?

Not always. Day 1 of a Chinese lunar month is the day of the New Moon, and New Moon and Full Moon are 13.9–15.6 days apart, so the Full Moon often falls on day 16 and occasionally on day 17. A Chinese saying puts it this way: “the Moon of the fifteenth is roundest on the sixteenth.”

What is a supermoon?

A Full Moon that happens when the Moon is relatively close to Earth, so it looks a little bigger and brighter than usual. It is not a formal astronomical term and definitions vary; we use “a Full Moon less than 360,000 km from Earth,” which gives an average of 2.1 a year. To the naked eye the difference is actually hard to tell.

How do the New Moon and Full Moon differ in astrology?

The New Moon is the Sun and Moon in conjunction, the start of a cycle, suited to making plans and beginning things. The Full Moon is the Sun and Moon in opposition, the high point of the cycle, when results come into view; it suits reviewing, harvesting or letting go. The signs they fall in set the theme each time.
