Plenty of people read about their Sun sign and think "that isn't really me". Often the missing piece is the rising sign. Your Sun is who you want to be; your Ascendant is what people see when you walk into a room, and the two being different is the norm. Your rising sign can only be calculated with a birth time; the calculator below also shows where your chart ruler sits.

What is a rising sign?

Stand at your birthplace and look east: at any moment some part of the zodiac is coming up over the horizon. That point is the Ascendant (ASC), and the sign it falls in is your rising sign. The Ascendant is the cusp of the 1st house, and the other eleven houses follow from it, so when the rising sign changes, every house in the chart turns with it.

Astrological tradition reads the rising sign as your outward style: first impressions, the way you dress, your first reaction to unfamiliar surroundings. The Sun sign takes a while to show; the rising sign is written on your face from the first meeting.

The planet that rules your rising sign is your chart ruler. The sign and house it occupies are often read as where your life is centered: with the chart ruler in the 10th house, life tends to revolve around career; in the 7th, relationships become a lifelong theme. We use the traditional rulers to find the chart ruler (Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius, Jupiter for Pisces); modern astrologers use Pluto, Uranus and Neptune instead, and both are listed below.

Half an hour can change your rising sign

The rising sign moves through all twelve signs in a day, about two hours each on average, but in practice the spread is wide and depends on the latitude of the birthplace. The further from the equator, the bigger the gap:

In Taipei, Aries and Pisces rising last only about an hour and a half; in London, Aries rising shrinks to 52 minutes while Leo through Scorpio each last close to three hours. So if you were born while a quick-rising sign was on the horizon, twenty or thirty minutes can change the sign, and it is worth checking your birth certificate. If you only know "morning" or "afternoon", cast the chart for two or three possible times and see which rising sign sounds more like you.

The twelve rising signs

Each rising sign below covers three things: the first impression you make, how you handle new surroundings, and how you are most often misread. Read it together with your chart ruler: two people with Aries rising will spend their drive in very different places if one has Mars in the 2nd house and the other in the 12th.

Aries rising

People meet someone direct and energetic who moves first and figures it out later. Feelings show on the face, so everyone knows your mood right away. Often mistaken for impulsive or competitive, when usually you are just quick and hate to drag things out.

Taurus rising

You come across as calm and easy to be around; you speak unhurriedly and watch before you act. New places need a warm-up period, and once settled you are the reliable one. Often mistaken for slow or stubborn, when you are really making sure the ground is solid.

Gemini rising

You look young, quick and easy to talk to, and strike up conversations anywhere. Lots of expression and gesture; attention jumps to whatever is new. Often mistaken for flighty, when it is really a habit of handling a lot of information at once.

Cancer rising

Gentle but a little reserved at first; you sense whether a place feels safe before opening up. A natural caretaker whose mood follows the atmosphere. Often mistaken for hard to approach, until people discover how attached you get.

Leo rising

You have presence; walk into a room and people notice. Image matters, and you want things done with dignity and style. Often mistaken for showing off, when you are simply serious about doing it well.

Virgo rising

You seem neat, organized and a little formal, and in a new place you learn the rules first. You notice details and quietly help clean up. Often mistaken for picky, when you just have your own standard for "done right".

Libra rising

Polite, attractive and well judged; people feel comfortable with you from the first meeting. In new settings you consider everyone's feelings first. Often mistaken for a people-pleaser with no opinion, when you need time to weigh every side.

Scorpio rising

Your gaze is penetrating; you say little and people sense they are being read. Guarded in new places and slow to reveal yourself. Often mistaken for cold or difficult, when you are just checking whether someone can be trusted.

Sagittarius rising

Cheerful, frank and easygoing; you look like you came to have fun. You love new places and new people, and you tend to say exactly what you think. Often mistaken for not taking things seriously, when you just refuse to make the mood heavy.

Capricorn rising

You look mature and composed, and were probably called an old soul when young. In a new setting you first work out your role and responsibilities. Often mistaken for stern or distant, when you just like to finish the job before relaxing.

You have your own style and keep a little distance while staying friendly. You view new situations like an observer and raise ideas nobody else thought of. Often mistaken for odd or aloof, when you simply refuse to follow the template.

Pisces rising

Soft and approachable; people find themselves telling you their secrets. Very sensitive to atmosphere, and you want to leave when the mood turns. Often mistaken for having no opinion or being a pushover, when you feel first and decide second; boundaries are your practice.

When your rising sign and Sun sign differ

Most people's Ascendant and Sun are in different signs, and that is perfectly normal. A common way to read the pair is Sun as inner motive, Ascendant as outward manner: someone with the Sun in Capricorn and Sagittarius rising is, underneath, a practical person set on getting things done, but comes across as easygoing and cheerful; people often discover how much planning goes on only after working with them. The further apart the two signs, the bigger the gap between the first impression and the person people get to know.

If your rising sign and Sun sign are the same, the Sun was near the eastern horizon when you were born, which means around sunrise. People like this tend to seem the same inside and out, and Sun-sign descriptions often fit them unusually well.

What if you don't know your birth time?

Without a birth time there is no rising sign; there is no shortcut. Check your birth certificate, hospital records or family records first. Older records in Taiwan and elsewhere in East Asia often note only the double-hour or the nearest hour, and some need daylight saving time removed; see birth time correction. If you really cannot find it, the Sun, Moon and other planets can still be placed, and your Moon sign and Venus sign are usually unaffected.
