BaZi Annual Pillars: Four Steps to See What Each Year Brings
Every December someone asks, "Will next year be good?" But an annual pillar is not good or bad for everyone alike: the same Bing-Wu year is a tailwind for someone whose favorable element is Fire and a headwind for someone who already has too much of it. Reading an annual pillar means asking what this year's stem and branch become once they land on your chart: which Ten God, favorable or not, which pillar they touch, and how they stack on the luck pillar you are in.
What an annual pillar is
Every year has a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, in a cycle of sixty: 2026 is Bing-Wu, 2027 is Ding-Wei, 2028 is Wu-Shen. In BaZi the year changes at Li Chun (立春, Start of Spring), not on January 1 and not at Lunar New Year; Li Chun usually falls between February 3 and 5. Annual pillars and luck pillars are two layers: the luck pillar governs ten years and sets the background, and the annual pillar governs one year and adds or subtracts on top. How they stack is covered in luck pillars and annual pillars.
Four steps to read a year
- The Ten God: which Ten God the year's stem, and the main qi of its branch, are to your Day Master sets the year's theme. A Wealth year is about income and running things, an Officer year about responsibility and pressure, a Resource year about learning and helpful people. See Ten God years.
- Favorable or not: compare the year's elements with your favorable elements. We read stem and branch together and grade the year as favorable, leaning favorable, mixed, leaning unfavorable, unfavorable or neutral.
- Where clashes and combinations land: check whether the year's branch clashes, combines, punishes, harms or breaks any branch in your chart. The pillar it touches, year, month, day or hour, tells you which area of life is stirred. See annual clashes and combinations.
- Stack it on the luck pillar: an unfavorable year inside a good luck pillar is usually a minor setback; a favorable year inside a hard one is a welcome breather. A year whose stem and branch match the luck pillar exactly is called sui yun bing lin.
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all, and looked at the ten years from 2026 to 2035. Years that repeat a luck pillar depend on the direction of the luck pillars, so each chart was read once as a man and once as a woman for that figure. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about anyone's fortune.
The same year is different for everyone
"This is a good year" means nothing in BaZi terms. In each of the ten years we measured, one group of people leans favorable and another leans unfavorable:

The difference comes from each person's favorable elements. In the Fire-heavy Bing-Wu year, a weak Day Master that needs Fire gets help, while someone who already has plenty of Fire should hold a little more ground. The figures for 2028 (Wu-Shen), 2029 (Ji-You) and 2030 (Geng-Xu) are identical because all three years pair one Earth with one Metal: what decides favorable or not is the element, not the year itself.
One chart, three annual pillars
Born July 10, 1990, Wu hour (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), female: a Bing Fire Day Master close to balanced; favorable Wood and Fire, unfavorable Metal and Water
- 2026, Bing-Wu: the stem is Friend and the branch Rob Wealth, both her favorable Fire, so it grades as a favorable year. But the Wu branch clashes her Zi day branch (the day pillar is herself and her partner), and it forms a self-punishment with the Wu in her year and hour pillars. Born in a Geng-Wu year, this is also her zodiac year. A tailwind, with a clear sense of change around herself and the rhythm of her life.
- 2027, Ding-Wei: the stem is Rob Wealth (Fire, favorable) and the branch Hurting Officer (Earth, neutral), so it leans favorable. Wei combines with the Wu in her year and hour pillars, the Ding stem clashes her Gui month stem, and Wei harms her Zi day branch. Smooth, with some adjusting to do, centered on people and her working life.
- 2032, Ren-Zi: the stem is Seven Killings and the branch Direct Officer, both her unfavorable Water, so it grades as an unfavorable year. Zi clashes the Wu in her year and hour pillars, Ren clashes her Bing Day Master, and it clashes Tai Sui. But that year she is in her Wu-Yin luck pillar (leaning favorable), so the background leans smooth: a stretch of headwind inside a tailwind decade, a year to keep a steady pace.

Three common misunderstandings
"This is a good year, so everyone will do well."
No annual pillar is equally good or bad for everyone. In the same year some people have a favorable year and others an unfavorable one; the difference is each person's favorable elements. The "fortune for the year" in the media usually looks only at the zodiac animal, the roughest layer of BaZi.
Your zodiac year (ben ming nian) is always a bad year.
Your zodiac year, called zhi Tai Sui, is simply a year whose branch matches your birth-year branch, which comes round every twelve years. It means the year shares the same energy as your roots, so things tend to be amplified; whether that runs with you or against you still depends on whether the year's elements are favorable for you.
A year that clashes your day branch means relationship trouble.
The year's branch runs in a twelve-year cycle, so everyone's day branch gets clashed in turn. In our sample about 8.3% of people meet it in any given year and about 83.3% within ten years. A clash means movement: a move, a new job, a new rhythm, or a relationship taking a step forward. It does not mean a breakup.
