The Twelve Houses in Astrology: What the 1st to 12th Houses Mean
Everyone has the signs and planets; the houses decide which room of your life they live in. Two people with Mars in Aries: with Mars in the 10th house the drive goes into career, in the 4th it may come out mostly at home. Houses always need a birth time, which is exactly why a birth chart is so much more personal than a Sun sign.

Chinese-language astrology often labels the houses with palace names borrowed from Zi Wei Dou Shu, but the meanings are not the same; see below.
Angular, succedent and cadent houses
The twelve houses fall into three groups of four by their position in the chart. Planets in angular houses are usually considered the most prominent, because the angular cusps are the four angles: Ascendant, IC, Descendant and Midheaven.

The houses also face each other in pairs: the 1st (yourself) opposite the 7th (others), the 4th (home) opposite the 10th (career), the 2nd (your own money) opposite the 8th (shared money). When you read one house, glance at the one across from it; it often shows how a person is pulled between the two areas.
Empty houses: houses with no planets
Ten planets in twelve houses means some houses will always be empty. Our engine cast 1,200 charts for births in Taipei between 1950 and 2010:

So empty houses are normal; they don't mean that area of life is unimportant or undeveloped. To read an empty house, look at the sign on its cusp and where that sign's ruler sits: an empty 7th house with Libra on the cusp sends you to Venus, and the condition of your Venus describes you in partnerships.
House systems: why a different method moves planets
There have been many ways to divide the twelve houses. Placidus, our default, is the most widely used in modern astrology; it divides the sky by the time each point takes to travel from your horizon, so houses come in different sizes. Whole sign houses is the oldest method: the entire sign containing the Ascendant is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on, one sign per house.
Both methods begin the 1st house in the rising sign, but the other cusps differ. In our Taipei sample, switching to whole sign moved at least one planet to a different house in 93.5% of charts, 5 planets on average. So when you read houses, check which system is in use first; when two websites disagree about houses, this is usually why. The calculator above lets you switch between the two.
The further from the equator, the more unequal Placidus houses become: 77.2% of London charts have an interception, against 30.8% in Taipei. Near the Arctic Circle, Placidus has no solution at all at certain moments; our calculator then switches to whole sign houses and says so.
Astrological houses are not Zi Wei palaces
Chinese-language astrology often borrows Zi Wei Dou Shu palace names for the houses, calling the 1st house the Life Palace and the 7th the Spouse Palace, for example. But the two systems are built and read differently: astrological houses are counted from the horizon, counterclockwise; Zi Wei palaces are derived from the lunar birth month and double-hour, in a different order. The 8th house differs most: in astrology it is shared resources and intimacy, while the Zi Wei palace that shares its Chinese name is about constitution and health. Keep track of which system a text is using.
A straight word: a birth chart is a language, not a prophecy
A birth chart draws the sky at the moment you were born so you can talk about personality and life themes in terms of planets, signs and houses. The planetary positions are astronomical fact and can be calculated very precisely; readings such as "Mars in Aries means drive" are astrological tradition, not scientific findings. It is a fine tool for knowing yourself and sorting out your thoughts, but it cannot make decisions for you. Twelve houses FAQ
Do I need a birth time for the houses?
Yes. The houses are cut from the horizon at the moment of birth, and the whole wheel turns by roughly one house every two hours. Without a birth time you can read the planets' signs but not their houses.
Is an empty house a bad sign?
No. Ten planets share twelve houses, and our Taipei charts averaged 5.7 empty houses. Read an empty house through the ruler of the sign on its cusp; that planet's condition speaks for the house.
Which is more accurate, Placidus or whole sign houses?
There is no consensus. Placidus is the most common in modern astrology and in most websites and apps; whole sign houses is the Hellenistic method and has come back into fashion. Our default is Placidus, and the calculator can switch to whole sign for comparison.
Does the 8th house mean death or illness?
Traditional astrology did link the 8th house with death, but the modern reading is mainly shared resources (a partner's money, loans, inheritance), intimacy and psychological transformation. This site does not make health or lifespan readings.
What is an intercepted sign?
In unequal house systems such as Placidus, some houses are wide enough to contain an entire sign, which then does not sit on any house cusp; that sign is intercepted. It is more common at higher latitudes: 77.2% of our London charts had one, against 30.8% in Taipei.
