Zi Wei in the Life Palace: What the Emperor Star Says About You

Zi Wei heads the fourteen major stars; the classics call it the emperor star. People with Zi Wei in the Life Palace are born with an air of “I’ll decide”: proud, conscious of face, thinking on a grand scale, and inclined to shoulder whatever comes. At first sight they often seem composed, even a little aloof; get to know them and you find a strong sense of responsibility under that dignity.

The Zi Wei personality

Zi Wei’s great lesson is the “lonely ruler”. An emperor needs ministers, and Zi Wei needs helper stars such as Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui and Tian Yue. With help around it, Zi Wei makes a generous leader; without it, it can become the person who does everything alone, will not take advice, and is strangely susceptible to flattery. So the first thing to check in a Zi Wei chart is who is standing beside it.

• Career: Management, administration, public service and any role with decision-making power. Starting a business also works, provided she or he finds a capable second-in-command.
• Money: Fairly generous with money, values quality and appearances, and spends on things that make life look and feel dignified.
• Love: Needs to be respected in a relationship and dislikes being managed. Shows care by “sorting everything out for you”.

Bright and fallen: where Zi Wei is strongest

A bright Zi Wei is broad-minded and dependable, and better at making room for others. Zi Wei has no fallen position. In a neutral position it is just as opinionated but less sure of itself, which can look like outward bossiness over inner unease. By the brightness table of the Complete Book used on this site: Exalted: Chou, Wu, Wei; Strong: Yin, Mao, Si, Shen, You, Hai; Favorable: Chen, Xu; Neutral: Zi.

The table shows, for each of the twelve branches where Zi Wei can sit in the Life Palace, its brightness, the major stars sharing the palace, and the major stars of the opposite, Wealth and Career palaces. These positions are fixed by the placement rules: once Zi Wei is placed, every other major star follows, so Zi Wei in a given branch always has the same palace group.

“Empty” means that palace has no major star; in a reading you borrow the major stars from its opposite palace and pay extra attention to the minor stars and transformations inside it.

The six combinations of Zi Wei in the Life Palace

The twelve branches clash in opposite pairs, and each pair holds the same major stars, so Zi Wei in the Life Palace comes in only six combinations. The two branches of a pair differ in brightness and in how things look from the Travel Palace.

Zi Wei alone, facing Tan Lang (Zi or Wu)

Zi: Zi Wei neutral; Wu: Zi Wei exalted. Opposite: Tan Lang; Wealth: Wu Qu and Tian Xiang; Career: Lian Zhen and Tian Fu. About 14.4% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Zi Wei alone in the Life Palace with Tan Lang opposite: proud and wanting to lead, with Tan Lang’s sociability and appetites mixed in. In Wu the classics speak of “reaching toward the light”, Zi Wei exalted and at its strongest; in Zi, Zi Wei is only neutral and has less presence. A lone Zi Wei needs Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui and Tian Yue even more, or it risks becoming a lonely ruler.

Zi Wei with Po Jun (Chou or Wei)

Chou: Zi Wei exalted, Po Jun strong; Wei: Zi Wei exalted, Po Jun strong. Opposite: Tian Xiang; Wealth: Wu Qu and Qi Sha; Career: Lian Zhen and Tan Lang. About 18.8% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The emperor star with the expenditure star: opinionated and with real destructive force, fond of tearing things down and starting over, and unwilling to play by other people’s rules. In work it suits founding, reform and taking over a mess; the weak spots are impatience and a habit of breaking before building, and the big turning points in life are often ones it starts itself. The classics say Zi Wei with Po Jun is “a disloyal minister and an unfilial son”; a modern reading is simply that it does not defer to authority and wants to run its own life. Zi Wei with Tian Fu (Yin or Shen)

Yin: Zi Wei strong, Tian Fu exalted; Shen: Zi Wei strong, Tian Fu favorable. Opposite: Qi Sha; Wealth: Wu Qu; Career: Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang. About 17.5% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Two leader stars in one palace: large-minded and ambitious, wanting both to build and to preserve. People with Zi Wei and Tian Fu together often seem steady and dependable, and suit being the decision-maker in an organisation. The lesson is the tug-of-war between the two forces: wanting to push ahead while fearing to lose what they have, so big decisions can stall, and it is not easy for them to climb down. Zi Wei with Tan Lang (Mao or You)

Mao: Zi Wei strong, Tan Lang fair; You: Zi Wei strong, Tan Lang fair. Opposite: empty; Wealth: Wu Qu and Po Jun; Career: Lian Zhen and Qi Sha. About 17.5% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The emperor star with the romance star: extremely well liked, knows how to enjoy life, and has a real gift for aesthetics, entertainment and social life. The classics call it “romance offending the ruler”, a warning that this pair is easily led by desire, and that drink, romance, money and temper all need moderation. Zi Wei with Tian Xiang (Chen or Xu)

Chen: Zi Wei favorable, Tian Xiang favorable; Xu: Zi Wei favorable, Tian Xiang favorable. Opposite: Po Jun; Wealth: Wu Qu and Tian Fu; Career: Lian Zhen. About 16.2% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The emperor star with the seal star: cares about status and rules, works in an orderly way, and suits management, administration and public service. This pair sits in Chen and Xu, which the classics call the “net of heaven and earth”: development often feels boxed in, and there is a period of pressure to get through before breaking out. Zi Wei with Qi Sha (Si or Hai)

Si: Zi Wei strong, Qi Sha neutral; Hai: Zi Wei strong, Qi Sha neutral. Opposite: Tian Fu; Wealth: Wu Qu and Tan Lang; Career: Lian Zhen and Po Jun. About 15.5% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The emperor star with the marshal star; the classics say “Zi Wei turns Qi Sha into authority”: Qi Sha’s drive is taken into Zi Wei’s service and becomes forceful leadership. Strong-willed and action-oriented, not afraid of difficulty, suited to lead-the-troops kinds of work. The downside is being domineering and impatient, which can feel oppressive to others. Birth-year transformations in the Life Palace

• Zi Wei with Hua Quan (born in a Ren year): Zi Wei with Hua Quan in the Life Palace strengthens the urge to lead and the ability to execute. It suits positions of real authority, but watch for being too forceful and leaving others no room. In our sample, about 8.4% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Quan there.
• Zi Wei with Hua Ke (born in a Yi year): Zi Wei with Hua Ke in the Life Palace cares about reputation and image and works in an orderly way; elders and bosses tend to notice and appreciate it. A very respectable arrangement. In our sample, about 10.9% of people with Zi Wei in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Ke there.

Men’s and women’s charts

Men: The classics say a man with Zi Wei is “destined for rank”, attentive to status and achievement. A modern reading: he cares a great deal about his place in a group and suits work with clear authority; in love he is used to taking the lead and needs to learn to listen to his partner.

Women: The classics say two things about a woman with Zi Wei: that she “brings fortune to her husband and children”, and that she is “hard-natured”. A modern reading: she is independent and opinionated, often the one who makes decisions at home or at work, and suits being a manager herself; in love she is drawn to someone at least as capable as she is who also respects her.

The classics were written in a traditional society, and their comments on men’s and women’s charts often carry the gender expectations of their time. We give the classical sayings alongside a modern reading, but we read charts for tendencies of character and never rank people by gender.

With auspicious stars, with Sha stars

With auspicious stars: With Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui, Tian Yue, Wen Chang and Wen Qu around it, the classics speak of the “ruler and ministers gather” pattern, Zi Wei at its best: people to help and people to follow.

With Sha stars: With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie, Zi Wei’s pride can harden into stubbornness and isolation; when Hua Ji strikes from the opposite palace, watch for decisions made to save face.

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they say nothing about whether anyone’s destiny is good or bad.
