BaZi Luck Pillars: Ten Years a Step, Forward or Backward, Favorable or Not
Your birth chart is the ground you start from; luck pillars are the weather that ground meets along the way. Every ten years the pillar changes, and each one brings a new Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, delivering different elements. The same chart runs smoothly in a decade that brings its favorable elements and has to hold steady in one that brings the unfavorable. Reading luck pillars comes down to asking: what is this decade bringing?
How luck pillars are laid out
- Start from the month pillar: the first luck pillar is the stem-branch pair one step after or one step before the month pillar. With a Gui-Wei month pillar, for example, the first pillar running forward is Jia-Shen, and running backward it is Ren-Wu.
- Forward or backward: men born in a yang year (year stem Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng or Ren) and women born in a yin year run forward; men born in a yin year and women born in a yang year run backward.
- Start age: running forward, count to the next solar term; running backward, count back to the previous one. Convert the gap at "three days to one year."
- Ten years a step: after that the pillar changes every ten years; usually around eight are read.
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample) and read each once as a man and once as a woman, 33,604 people in all, looking at the first eight luck pillars only. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about anyone's fortune.
Start ages spread fairly evenly from 1 to 11 (counting birth as age 1), so "at what age does my luck change" differs from person to person; there is no single answer. The details are in start age and transitions.
Is a luck pillar favorable or not?
The yardstick is your favorable elements: which element the pillar's stem carries, which element the main qi of its branch carries, and whether each falls among your favorable or unfavorable elements. We read stem and branch together:

The most common grade is mixed. That is exactly where luck pillars are most often misread: a decade is rarely all good or all bad, and far more often some areas run smoothly while others stall. Classical texts also say "the first five years follow the stem, the last five follow the branch," meaning the two halves of a pillar can feel different; we present both views and grade on stem and branch together. On average, a person's first eight luck pillars include about 2.05 favorable ones and 1.61 unfavorable ones.

- How to read it: it is one chart, but because of sex, one set of luck pillars moves forward and the other backward. They start nine years apart, and every pillar brings different elements. That is why boy-girl twins born the same day, at the same hour, still live to different rhythms.

Three common misunderstandings
An unfavorable luck pillar means ten years of bad luck.
Unfavorable pillars are about 20.2% of all luck pillars, and roughly eight people in ten will pass through at least one. It means the elements that decade brings do not suit you, so it is a time to hold steady, build up and take fewer risks, not a sentence to misfortune. Plenty of people lay their strongest foundations in exactly those years.
When the luck pillar changes, life flips overnight.
The year or two around a change often feel unsettled, but a luck pillar is a gradual trend, not a switch. The last pillar fades slowly and the next one arrives slowly.
"When the year and the luck pillar coincide, if you do not die, someone close to you will."
This is the most widespread, and most frightening, saying on the subject. In our sample about 97.4% of people meet such a year within their first eight luck pillars; if the saying were true, almost no one would escape it.
