Secondary Progressions in Astrology: A Day for a Year, and the Life Stage You Are In
Secondary progressions rest on one rule: the sky on the first day after your birth stands for your first year of life; day thirty stands for age thirty. Over those days the planets move on: the progressed Sun about 1° a year, the progressed Moon 12° to 15° a year. Where they go and what they touch in your natal chart is astrology's language for life stages. Enter your birth details to see where your progressed chart has reached.

A day for a year, using a tropical year of 365.2422 days. Progressed Midheaven by true solar arc; progressed Ascendant derived from it at the birthplace latitude. Progressed aspects use the progressed Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Ascendant and Midheaven to the seven classical natal planets plus the natal angles; five major aspects, 1° orb.
Where "a day for a year" comes from
The idea goes back to antiquity; the 17th-century Italian astrologer Placidus (of Placidus houses) organized it into a system, and it became the most widely used progression method in modern Western astrology. The logic is symbolic: the Sun circles the sky once a day and the zodiac once a year, so one day is matched to one year.
Unlike transits, progressions ignore today's planets and follow your own chart as it unfolds over time, so they are mostly used to talk about inner change: attitudes, needs, the big chapters of life.
The three things that matter most
Born in Taipei 1960–2005, one day in 24 with the hour drawn at random, 701 people, progressed from birth to age 90.
1. The progressed Moon: a new theme every two years or so
The progressed Moon moves fastest, changing sign and natal house every 2.28 years on average, which makes it the most noticeable marker: the house it moves through is where life centers for those years. It goes all the way round in about 27 to 28 years, returning to its birth position around age 27 or 28.
| Progressed Moon in | Emotional needs for these years |
|---|---|
| Aries | for these two or three years feelings are direct and restless; a good time to start something new. |
| Taurus | for these two or three years you want stability, comfort and practical security; a slower pace suits you. |
| Gemini | for these two or three years you need fresh stimulation: learning, talking, looking around. |
| Cancer | for these two or three years you miss home and want to be cared for, and often care for others. |
| Leo | for these two or three years you need to be seen and appreciated, and want to do something you are proud of. |
| Virgo | for these two or three years you want your life in order, notice details and find things to fix. |
| Libra | for these two or three years you need company; harmony in relationships directly shapes your mood. |
| Scorpio | for these two or three years feelings run deeper and stronger, and old wounds may resurface. |
| Sagittarius | for these two or three years you want freedom and distance, with a strong pull toward study and travel. |
| Capricorn | for these two or three years feelings are contained and responsibility weighs more; energy goes into long-term goals. |
| Aquarius | for these two or three years you want space of your own, and ties to friends and groups matter more. |
| Pisces | for these two or three years you are sensitive and easily affected by your surroundings; good for rest and creative work, and the close of a cycle. |
2. The progressed Sun: a thirty-year chapter
The progressed Sun moves about 1° a year, so the degree of your natal Sun roughly sets when it first changes sign: a Sun at 25° changes around age 5, one at 3° around 27. After that it changes about every 30 years, each change like a new theme for life.
3. The progressed lunation cycle
The angle between the progressed Moon and progressed Sun goes through new, first quarter, full and last quarter just like the real Moon, one round taking about 29.5 years. The American astrologer Dane Rudhyar matched its eight phases to a life cycle: the new moon begins, the full moon shows results, the balsamic phase closes.
| Phase | Sun–Moon angle | This stage |
|---|---|---|
| Progressed New Moon phase | 0°–45° | A new life cycle has just begun; the direction is not yet clear, but there is an urge to start again. Seeds planted now grow over the next thirty years or so. |
| Progressed Crescent phase | 45°–90° | The new direction takes shape, and old habits pull against it; hard work, but this is when ideas get off the ground. |
| Progressed First Quarter phase | 90°–135° | A stage of action and tests: decisions to make, responsibility to take, often a hurdle that has to be cleared. |
| Progressed Gibbous phase | 135°–180° | A stage of adjusting and refining; things have taken shape, and now the details are polished before they bear fruit. |
| Progressed Full Moon phase | 180°–225° | Results become visible and things are seen most clearly; relationships and achievements are held up for review, and what was planted shows its fruit. |
| Progressed Disseminating phase | 225°–270° | A stage of sharing: teaching others what this cycle has taught you and giving it back. |
| Progressed Last Quarter phase | 270°–315° | A stage of reassessment and release; old beliefs and methods are questioned as you prepare to change course. |
| Progressed Balsamic phase | 315°–360° | A stage of closure and rest, letting go of what is no longer needed before the next new moon; outwardly quieter. |
Progressed stations: Mercury for almost everyone, Venus and Mars for about one in five
Mercury, Venus and Mars go retrograde. If one of them stations in the weeks after your birth, it changes direction in your progressed chart at the corresponding age, and astrology reads a shift in how that planet expresses itself. In our sample:
Same sample; the speed of progressed Mercury, Venus and Mars checked day by day for a change of sign.
Progressed aspects: when a theme is triggered
When a progressed planet makes an exact aspect to a natal planet, that theme is said to be triggered. We use only a 1° orb because progressions move slowly: a progressed Sun aspect stays within 1° for about two years, a progressed Moon aspect for a month or two. On average 6.3 progressed aspects are active in a year (the middle 80% of people have between 3 and 9).
Example: Einstein in 1905
1905 was Albert Einstein's "miracle year", when he published four papers including special relativity. From his birth data (March 14, 1879, 11:30 a.m., Ulm, birth certificate), his progressed chart that year:
| Item | Mid-1905 |
|---|---|
| Age | 26.3 (progressed chart = the sky 26 days after birth) |
| Progressed Sun | Aries 19° (moved from Pisces into Aries at 6.5) |
| Progressed Moon | Scorpio, in the natal 5th house |
| Progressed lunation phase | Progressed Full Moon phase (entered 1902, age 23.5) |
| Progressed MC / Ascendant | Aries / Leo |
His progressed lunation was in the Full Moon phase, traditionally the stage when results come into view. But this is hindsight: everyone passes through a progressed full moon two or three times in a lifetime, and most people do not write relativity.
Progressed Midheaven and Ascendant: different methods
- True solar arc (used here): natal MC plus the distance the progressed Sun has moved. The default in most modern software.
- Naibod: the MC moves a fixed 0°59′08″ a year, the Sun's mean motion, regardless of its actual speed.
- Sidereal time: the MC for the same clock time on day N after birth.
The progressed Ascendant is then derived from the progressed MC at the birthplace latitude. Both need a birth time; without one the tool leaves them and the houses out.
Progressions, transits and solar returns
| Method | How it works | What it shows | Time scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transits | Today's planets laid over the natal chart | Where outside events and pressures come from | Slow-planet aspects last months to a year or two |
| Solar return | A new chart each year for the moment the Sun returns to its birth position | The themes and tone of the year | One chart per year |
| Secondary progressions | The sky N days after birth = age N | Inner growth and life stages | Progressed Moon changes sign about every 2.3 years; progressed Sun about every 30 |
A straight word: progressions describe an inner rhythm, not events that must happen
"A day for a year" is a symbolic rule, not astronomical cause and effect: the sky thirty days after your birth has no physical link to your life at thirty. Progressions are valuable as a language for life stages: when a new cycle begins and when it is time to wrap up. The positions can be calculated precisely; the readings vary by astrologer and school, and looking back at famous people it is easy to remember only the examples that fit. Now look at this year's solar return
The solar return is the chart for the moment the Sun returns to its birth position each year, showing where the year's focus lies.
Secondary progressions FAQ
How are secondary progressions different from transits?
Transits look at where the planets are today relative to your natal chart and lean toward outside events; progressions look at the sky N days after your birth, your own chart unfolding over time, and lean toward inner growth and life stages.
How often does the progressed Moon change sign?
On average every 2.28 years in our sample (shortest 1.95, longest 2.55), depending on how fast the Moon was moving after your birth.
Can I use progressions without a birth time?
Partly: the progressed Sun and Moon signs and the lunation phase still work, though progressed Moon dates may be off by a few months. The progressed Ascendant, Midheaven and houses need a birth time and are skipped.
What is the progressed lunation phase?
The angle between the progressed Moon and progressed Sun, moving through eight phases from new to balsamic in about 29.5 years. The progressed new moon marks the start of a new life cycle; the progressed full moon, when results become visible.
What does a progressed planet changing direction mean?
If Mercury, Venus or Mars stationed in the weeks after your birth, it changes direction in your progressed chart at the matching age, read as a shift in how that planet expresses itself. In our sample 96.6% of people see progressed Mercury change direction before 90.
