Eastern Numerology Calculator: The Eight Stars in Phone, Plate and ID Numbers

Compiled by · AI-generated content · Updated · How we calculate

Enter a number to see which star each pair of digits forms, which star dominates, and whether each unfavorable star has a favorable partner in the traditional rhyme. The calculator follows the rules used in Taiwan, including the handling of 0 and 5, Fu Wei carrying the previous star, and letter conversion, and it shows every step.

Eastern Numerology calculator: enter a number, see its eight stars

Three calculations in one place: a single number (phone, license plate, address), an ID-style number (personality type and life periods), and several numbers combined (balanced by the traditional rhyme). Letters convert as A=01, B=02 … and other symbols are skipped.

Single number

Addresses work too. Use Arabic numerals, half-width or full-width.

ID-style number: personality type and life periods

Eastern Numerology reads a lifelong number such as a Taiwanese national ID for personality and life periods. A leading letter is converted as usual; a leading 0 is not counted for the personality type.

Several numbers combined

Each number is paired on its own, the stars are added up, and then balanced one for one by the rhyme to see which stars remain.

What Eastern Numerology is

Eastern Numerology, also called the “Number I Ching” (數字易經), is a way of reading numbers that has become popular in Taiwan in recent years. It takes each pair of neighboring digits in a number and matches it to one of eight stars: the favorable Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian and Fu Wei, and the unfavorable Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha and Huo Hai. Phone numbers, license plates, house numbers and ID numbers can all be read this way.

Despite the similar name, it is not the Western numerology covered elsewhere on this site. Western numerology adds up the digits of a birth date to a single number; Eastern Numerology looks at which digits sit next to each other and never adds them up. It is also different from the phone and plate number reading used in Chinese name analysis, which divides the last four digits by 80 and looks up the 81 numbers.

The eight stars, and the way pairs are assigned to them, come from the Eight Mansions school of feng shui, as the table below shows. We present Eastern Numerology as a folk tradition: every description of personality or luck on these pages is the tradition’s view, not a tested finding.

The eight stars and their pairs

Each star owns eight pairs. Beyond favorable and unfavorable, common tables also rank each star’s eight pairs into four strength levels; for Tian Yi, 13 and 31 are the strongest and 27 and 72 the weakest. Tables differ slightly between teachers; we use the most common version.

Where the table comes from: Lo Shu numbers and the Eight Mansions

The pair table is not arbitrary. Treat 1 to 9 as Lo Shu numbers, each tied to a trigram in the Later Heaven arrangement: Kan 1, Kun 2, Zhen 3, Xun 4, Qian 6, Dui 7, Gen 8, Li 9. The star that the Eight Mansions “Great Wandering Year” method gives for those two trigrams is the star of the pair; two identical digits (the same trigram) give Fu Wei. For example, 1 is Kan and 3 is Zhen; in a Kan house the Zhen direction is Tian Yi, so 13 and 31 are both Tian Yi.

We checked all 64 pairs in our calculator against the Wandering Year engine behind our Eight Mansions calculator, and every one matches. In the 8×8 table below, rows are the first digit and columns the second:

This also explains why 5 and 0 need special rules: in the Lo Shu square, 5 sits in the center with no trigram, and 0 is not a Lo Shu number at all. Neither can form a Wandering Year star, so the tradition handles them separately.

How to calculate: four rules

1. Each pair of neighboring digits forms one pair. 1394 → 13 Tian Yi 39 Sheng Qi 94 Tian Yi. Four digits give three pairs, and Tian Yi is the most common.

2. Fu Wei carries the previous star. 1334 → 13 Tian Yi 33 Fu Wei→Tian Yi 34 Yan Nian. 33 is Fu Wei and follows Tian Yi, so it counts as Tian Yi. Only a Fu Wei at the very start, with nothing before it, counts as Fu Wei itself.

3. A 5 in the middle repeats the pair around it. 154 → 1414 → 14 Sheng Qi 41 Sheng Qi 14 Sheng Qi: 1 5 4 becomes 1 4 1 4, giving three Sheng Qi pairs. Two fives in a row add one more: 1554 → 141414 → 14 Sheng Qi 41 Sheng Qi 14 Sheng Qi 41 Sheng Qi 14 Sheng Qi. A 5 at the start, at the end, or next to a 0 is treated as 0: 5134 → 1134 → 11 Fu Wei 13 Tian Yi 34 Yan Nian.

4. A 0 repeats the digit before it. 104 → 114 → 11 Fu Wei 14 Sheng Qi: 1 0 4 becomes 1 1 4, and the 0 does not form a pair of its own. A leading 0 takes the first non-zero digit: 0413 → 4413 → 44 Fu Wei 41 Sheng Qi 13 Tian Yi.

Letters convert to two digits, A=01, B=02 … Z=26, for example AB12 → 111212 → 11 Fu Wei 11 Fu Wei 12 Jue Ming 21 Jue Ming 12 Jue Ming. This covers the letters on license plates and at the start of Taiwanese ID numbers.

ID-style numbers: personality type and life periods

Eastern Numerology reads a number that never changes, such as a national ID, for innate traits. The star with the most pairs is the personality type, and each pair in order covers a stretch of life, giving the life periods. Take the made-up number A123456789: A becomes 01, the leading 0 is not counted for the type, and the result is led by Huo Hai. Life periods use the full sequence: the first pair covers ages 0–10, then each pair covers five years up to 50, and ten years each from 51.

Teachers divide the periods differently; some keep five-year steps after 51 and some stop at 70. We use a common version and show the full sequence in the result so you can compare.

The balancing rhyme and combined numbers

Eastern Numerology has a rhyme for how favorable stars offset unfavorable ones:

Combining numbers follows the rhyme: the stars from an ID, a phone and a plate are added up and then canceled one for one. For 0912345678, ABC-1234 and 105 together: Tian Yi balance Jue Ming × 1; Sheng Qi balance Huo Hai × 1; the star left with the most pairs is Fu Wei and Huo Hai. The “several numbers combined” option in this page’s calculator does exactly this.

The rhyme is part of the tradition, and we list it as such. We do not suggest changing a phone number, plate or ID just because of the digits: the accounts, contacts and paperwork behind a number are real costs, and the digits are only a point of reference.

Mobile number statistics: almost everyone has an unfavorable star

Using a fixed random seed, we generated 200,000 ten-digit Taiwanese mobile numbers starting with 09 and ran them through the same engine. Each number gives 9.6 pairs on average. The share of each star, how often it appears at least once, and how often it is the most common star:

StarShare of all pairsNumbers with at least oneMost common star (ties split)
Sheng Qi (Vitality)12.3%57%13.5%
Tian Yi (Heavenly Doctor)12.3%57%13.6%
Yan Nian (Longevity)12.3%57%13.5%
Fu Wei (Stability)14.1%100%5.6%

Liu Sha (Six Killings)12.3%56.8%13.5%
Huo Hai (Mishaps)12.2%56.7%13.3%

A few figures stand out. The seven stars other than Fu Wei each take about 12% of all pairs, almost exactly even. Only 1.7% of mobile numbers contain no unfavorable star at all, while 7% contain all four. Fu Wei appears in every number because the leading 0 takes the next digit (09 becomes 99). In short, an unfavorable star in a number is normal; there is no need to worry on seeing Jue Ming or Wu Gui.

Eastern Numerology FAQ

How is Eastern Numerology different from Western numerology?

Western numerology adds up the digits of a birth date to 1–9 (or 11, 22, 33). Eastern Numerology pairs each two neighboring digits of a number and matches them to the eight Wandering Year stars of the Eight Mansions; nothing is added up. The names are similar but the premise and the method are different.

How are 0 and 5 handled?

A 0 repeats the digit before it (a leading 0 takes the first non-zero digit) and never forms a pair of its own. A 5 in the middle repeats the pair around it, so 154 becomes 1414. A 5 at the start, at the end, or next to a 0 is treated as 0. The reason is that 5 is the center of the Lo Shu square with no trigram, and 0 is not a Lo Shu number, so neither can form a star.

Why does Fu Wei count as another star?

The tradition holds that Fu Wei extends the pair before it, so 33 after 13 counts as Tian Yi. Only a Fu Wei at the very start, with nothing before it, counts as Fu Wei itself.

Are the numbers I enter recorded?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Numbers are not sent to a server, not added to the address bar and not stored on your device; reloading the page clears them.

Should I change my number if it has unfavorable stars?

Of 200,000 sampled mobile numbers, only 1.7% have no unfavorable star, so having one is normal. The balancing rhyme is the tradition’s view and we list it as such, but we do not suggest changing a phone number, plate or ID just because of the digits.

How are the life-period ages divided?

We use a common version: the first pair covers ages 0–10, then each pair covers five years up to 50, and ten years each from 51. Teachers differ, so the result shows the full sequence for comparison.
