Life Path Numbers: Calculator, Birth Grid and Personal Year
Life Path numerology is hugely popular in Taiwan, where it is called sheng ming ling shu: add up the digits of your birthday to get a number from 1 to 9, then read the lines and gaps in a nine-square grid. It is a popular form of Western numerology and has nothing to do with BaZi or Zi Wei Dou Shu, but it is a fun way to reflect on yourself and to talk with friends. This page explains the method used in Taiwan and how it compares with the one in most English-language books.

Taiwan's method and the American one
There are two common ways to add up a birth date. The one most used in Taiwan, and on this site, adds every digit at once. The other, which many American numerology books and websites teach, first reduces the month, the day and the year separately (keeping 11 and 22 intact) and then adds the three. The final Life Path digit always comes out the same; only whether a Master Number shows up along the way can differ. We follow the Taiwanese convention because that is what our readers there learn and compare notes on, and the calculator lists the other method's result whenever it changes the Master Number. With July 10, 1990 the two agree: all at once gives 27 → 9; separately, year 1990 → 1, month 7 → 7, day 10 → 1, and 1 + 7 + 1 = 9. With January 2, 1990 they do not: all at once gives 22 → 4, passing through Master Number 22; separately gives 1 + 1 + 2 = 4, with no Master Number. Same Life Path 4, different Master Number verdict.

How we counted: we ran our calculator on every birthday from 1960 to 2005 (16,802 days).
Life Path numbers 1 to 9 are exactly equally common, and the reason is arithmetic: reducing a digit sum to one digit is the same as taking the birth date written as an eight-digit number (for example 19900710) modulo 9, with 0 counting as 9. As the dates advance one day at a time, the remainder cycles through 1 to 9, so each number gets one ninth.

The two do not map onto each other. Everyone born on the same day has the same Life Path number, while their BaZi charts can differ a great deal depending on the hour. For the Chinese approach, cast a free BaZi chart.
Three common misconceptions
Pythagoras invented Life Path numerology.
It is often introduced that way. The Pythagoreans really did prize numbers, but the Life Path method in use today was mostly assembled in 20th-century Western popular books and has no direct line back to ancient Greece.
People with a rare Life Path number are more special.
Each number from 1 to 9 covers almost exactly 11.1% of birthdays. None is rarer than the others.
Numerology can tell you your destiny.
It only adds up the digits of a birthday. It makes a good conversation starter about yourself, not a basis for major life decisions.
