Tian Xiang in the Life Palace: What the Seal Star Says About You

Tian Xiang is the seal star; the classics compare it to the official who keeps the seal. People with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace are fair, attentive to manners and image, good at mediating and supporting, often the lubricant of a group and a dependable number two. They know their limits, value rules and fairness, and care what others think.

The Tian Xiang personality

Tian Xiang is strongly affected by its two neighbouring palaces. The classics describe two patterns: “wealth and shelter flanking the seal”, when Hua Lu and Tian Liang sit on either side and patrons help; and “punishment and fixation squeezing the seal”, when Qing Yang and Hua Ji sit on either side and other people’s troubles drag it in. So always check the two palaces next door.

• Career: Public service, administration, secretarial work, law, PR, service, fashion and beauty, and work that needs mediation and trust.
• Money: Steady with money, values quality of life and image; be especially careful about guaranteeing loans or partnerships that could drag it in.
• Love: Gentle, considerate and committed in love, dislikes conflict; tends to give way for a partner and should remember to voice its own needs.

Bright and fallen: where Tian Xiang is strongest

A bright Tian Xiang is steady, reliable, fair and appropriate. A fallen Tian Xiang faces Lian Zhen and Po Jun across the chart; with so much change around it, it often feels caught in the middle and stretched thin. The table shows, for each of the twelve branches where Tian Xiang can sit in the Life Palace, its brightness, the major stars sharing the palace, and the major stars of the opposite, Wealth and Career palaces. These positions are fixed by the placement rules: once Tian Xiang is placed, every other major star follows, so Tian Xiang in a given branch always has the same palace group.

“Empty” means that palace has no major star; in a reading you borrow the major stars from its opposite palace and pay extra attention to the minor stars and transformations inside it.

The six combinations of Tian Xiang in the Life Palace

The twelve branches clash in opposite pairs, and each pair holds the same major stars, so Tian Xiang in the Life Palace comes in only six combinations. The two branches of a pair differ in brightness and in how things look from the Travel Palace.

Lian Zhen with Tian Xiang (Zi or Wu)

Zi: Tian Xiang exalted, Lian Zhen neutral; Wu: Tian Xiang exalted, Lian Zhen neutral. Opposite: Po Jun; Wealth: Zi Wei and Tian Fu; Career: Wu Qu. About 17.3% of people with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The restraint star with the seal star: Tian Xiang keeps Lian Zhen within the rules, giving an upright character that values trust, suited to public service, legal work and management. Tian Xiang is exalted in Zi and Wu, making this one of Lian Zhen’s steadier combinations; heed the classical warning of “punishment and fixation squeezing the seal”: with Qing Yang and Hua Ji in the neighbouring palaces, it is easily drawn into others’ trouble. Tian Xiang alone in Chou or Wei, with Zi Wei and Po Jun opposite. Tian Xiang values rules and is good at mediating, yet borrows the reforming energy of Zi Wei and Po Jun, so the outside world often changes sharply. Tian Xiang is exalted in Chou and steadier than in Wei; pay particular attention to whether Qing Yang and Hua Ji flank it from the neighbouring palaces.

Wu Qu with Tian Xiang (Yin or Shen)

The wealth star with the seal star: practical and law-abiding, suited to finance, administration and trades that run on trust. Wu Qu’s hardness is softened by Tian Xiang’s mildness, making it easier to get along with than Wu Qu alone. Tian Xiang fallen in Mao or You, with Lian Zhen and Po Jun opposite: a changeable, conflict-prone environment in which Tian Xiang often feels caught in the middle. These people are actually very adaptable, but need to learn to say no rather than take everything on themselves.

Zi Wei with Tian Xiang (Chen or Xu)

This pair sits in Chen and Xu, which the classics call the “net of heaven and earth”: development often feels boxed in, and there is a period of pressure to get through before breaking out. Tian Xiang, only favorable in Si or Hai, with Wu Qu and Po Jun opposite. It often has to deal with money or upheaval out in the world, where Tian Xiang’s mediating skill is very useful. The lesson is being dragged down by other people’s affairs; take special care with guarantees and partnerships.

Birth-year transformations in the Life Palace

In the ten-stem table of the Complete Book, Tian Xiang takes no transformation, so people with Tian Xiang in the Life Palace never have a birth-year Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke or Hua Ji on that star itself. The transformations come in through other major stars sharing the palace, minor stars such as Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, and the stars of the palace group. In other words, a Tian Xiang Life Palace is moved less by the birth-year transformations, and the base colour of the personality comes mainly from Tian Xiang itself and the stars beside it.

Men’s and women’s charts

Men: The classics say a man with Tian Xiang has “plenty of food and clothing and an upright character”. A modern reading: he is reliable and keeps his word, suited to public service, administration and management; in love he is considerate and courteous, but may swallow his own needs to keep the peace.

Women: The classics say a woman with Tian Xiang is “dignified and blessed”. A modern reading: she is poised, tasteful and a good mediator, suited to administration, PR and service; in love she values character and responsibility.

The classics were written in a traditional society, and their comments on men’s and women’s charts often carry the gender expectations of their time. We give the classical sayings alongside a modern reading, but we read charts for tendencies of character and never rank people by gender.

With auspicious stars, with Sha stars

With auspicious stars: With Hua Lu and Tian Liang flanking it, the classics speak of “wealth and shelter flanking the seal”, many patrons and smooth fortunes; with Zuo Fu and You Bi its mediating skill grows.

With Sha stars: With Qing Yang and Hua Ji flanking it, the classics speak of “punishment and fixation squeezing the seal”: easily implicated and made to take the blame; with Di Kong or Di Jie, watch for financial leaks.

What the data says

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they say nothing about whether anyone’s destiny is good or bad.
