Tian Liang in the Life Palace: What the Shelter Star Says About You

Tian Liang is the shelter star, also called the old man’s star or the star of longevity. People with Tian Liang in the Life Palace are mature, responsible and protective, often the person others lean on at critical moments, and blessed with the favour of elders and patrons. They like to reason things out and give advice, and care deeply about fairness and justice.

The Tian Liang personality

Tian Liang is said to “turn danger into safety”, but only after danger arrives. So people with Tian Liang in the Life Palace often have a few close calls, and only later realise they were protected. Its lesson is lecturing and meddling, which can weigh on the people around it.

Bright and fallen: where Tian Liang is strongest

A bright Tian Liang is mature, reliable and responsible; in Wu the classics speak of “the longevity star in its temple”. A fallen Tian Liang is what the classics call “drifting”: prone to wandering and finding it hard to settle. Tian Liang strong in Chou or Wei, with Tian Ji opposite: mature and steady, liked by elders, fond of giving advice and good at analysis. Suited to consulting, healthcare, education and religion. The lesson is lecturing and meddling, and thinking so much that action is delayed.

Tian Tong with Tian Liang (Yin or Shen)

Yin: Tian Liang exalted, Tian Tong fair; Shen: Tian Liang fallen, Tian Tong strong. Opposite: empty; Wealth: Tai Yin; Career: Tian Ji. About 16.3% of people with Tian Liang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The star of blessings with the shelter star: gentle, empathetic and caring, suited to service, healthcare, education, social work and public service. It belongs to the Ji-Yue-Tong-Liang family and does best in a stable organisation. Tian Tong is strong in Shen and fair in Yin, while Tian Liang is exalted in Yin and fallen in Shen, so each position has its trade-offs; the lesson is ease and a reluctance to compete. Tai Yang with Tian Liang (Mao or You)

The star of honor with the shelter star: a sense of justice and a love of caring for others, suited to public service, education, healthcare and social work. The classical Yang-Liang-Chang-Lu pattern is this pair meeting Wen Chang and Lu Cun or Hua Lu, good for exams and reputation. This pair sits in Chen and Xu, where Tian Liang is exalted, bringing the favour of elders and patrons; the lesson is plenty of armchair strategy with less execution, and a habit of minding other people’s business. Tian Liang fallen in Si or Hai, with Tian Tong opposite: easy-going and caring, but prone to drifting and finding it hard to settle. The classics describe Tian Liang in Si or Hai as “drifting”; a modern reading is that it suits changeable environments, but needs a solid skill as its roots.

• Tian Liang with Hua Lu (born in a Ren year): Tian Liang with Hua Lu brings resources to the shelter star, often from elders or organisations; the classics also warn that Tian Liang with Hua Lu attracts disputes, so keep your hands clean. • Tian Liang with Hua Quan (born in a Yi year): Tian Liang with Hua Quan speaks with weight and decisiveness, suited to management or advisory roles, though it also meddles more. In our sample, about 11.5% of people with Tian Liang in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Quan there.
