Tai Yang in the Life Palace: What the Star of Honor Says About You

Tai Yang is the star of light and warmth; the classics call it “noble”, caring about reputation and fairness. People with Tai Yang in the Life Palace are warm, outgoing and happy to help, naturally look after those around them, and care how the group sees them. They are usually frank, keep few secrets and take responsibility.

The Tai Yang personality

Of all the major stars, Tai Yang changes most between bright and fallen. A daytime, bright Tai Yang shines and its giving is seen; a night-time, fallen Tai Yang is just as warm but often gives more than it gets back, and even takes the blame for its kindness. So the first thing to check in a Tai Yang chart is which palace it sits in.

• Career: Public service, education, media, diplomacy, sales, medicine, social services and other work that needs warmth and a public face.
• Money: Earns through reputation and connections and spends freely, often on others; a fallen Tai Yang especially needs to learn to save for itself.
• Love: Generous and proactive in love and likes to take care of a partner; watch that care does not turn into control.

Bright and fallen: where Tai Yang is strongest

A bright Tai Yang is warm and dependable, has a good name, can rally others, and its efforts are seen. A fallen or weak Tai Yang is just as warm-hearted but works hard for others’ benefit, giving much and being repaid slowly. The table shows, for each of the twelve branches where Tai Yang can sit in the Life Palace, its brightness, the major stars sharing the palace, and the major stars of the opposite, Wealth and Career palaces. These positions are fixed by the placement rules: once Tai Yang is placed, every other major star follows, so Tai Yang in a given branch always has the same palace group.

“Empty” means that palace has no major star; in a reading you borrow the major stars from its opposite palace and pay extra attention to the minor stars and transformations inside it.

Tai Yang alone, facing Tian Liang (Zi or Wu)

Zi: Tai Yang fallen; Wu: Tai Yang strong. Opposite: Tian Liang; Wealth: empty; Career: Ju Men. About 17.3% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Tai Yang alone in Zi or Wu, with Tian Liang opposite. In Wu the classics speak of “the sun at noon”, Tai Yang at its strongest, radiant and reputation-minded; in Zi, Tai Yang is fallen, just as warm but often feeling its efforts go unseen. Tian Liang opposite brings the favour of elders and an urge to look after others.

Tai Yang with Tai Yin (Chou or Wei)

Chou: Tai Yang weak, Tai Yin exalted; Wei: Tai Yang favorable, Tai Yin weak. Opposite: empty; Wealth: empty; Career: Tian Liang. About 18.1% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Sun and moon together in Chou or Wei: yin and yang side by side, with both outgoing and inward sides to the character, bigger emotional swings, and frequent movement between ideal and reality. In Chou, Tai Yin is exalted and Tai Yang weak, so it leans inward; in Wei, Tai Yang is favorable and Tai Yin weak, so it leans outward. Tai Yang with Ju Men (Yin or Shen)

Yin: Tai Yang strong, Ju Men exalted; Shen: Tai Yang favorable, Ju Men exalted. Opposite: empty; Wealth: empty; Career: empty. About 15.6% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The star of honor with the star of eloquence: persuasive and willing to speak up, suited to teaching, diplomacy, media and law. The classics say “Ju Men and Tai Yang together bring office for three generations”, meaning the Yin palace, where a strong Tai Yang lights up Ju Men’s shadow; in Shen the sun is already westering, and though it still speaks well, it should watch for disputes and overwork. Tai Yang with Tian Liang (Mao or You)

Mao: Tai Yang exalted, Tian Liang exalted; You: Tai Yang neutral, Tian Liang favorable. Opposite: empty; Wealth: Tai Yin; Career: empty. About 15.1% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

The star of honor with the shelter star: a sense of justice and a love of caring for others, suited to public service, education, healthcare and social work. The classical Yang-Liang-Chang-Lu pattern is this pair meeting Wen Chang and Lu Cun or Hua Lu, good for exams and reputation. In Mao both Tai Yang and Tian Liang are exalted, a far smoother position than You; in You, Tai Yang is the setting sun, giving much and being repaid slowly. Chen: Tai Yang strong; Xu: Tai Yang weak. Opposite: Tai Yin; Wealth: Ju Men; Career: empty. About 16.7% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Tai Yang alone in Chen or Xu, with Tai Yin opposite: sun and moon facing each other. With the Life Palace in Chen, Tai Yang is strong and Tai Yin in Xu opposite is strong too, both lights bright: warm, responsible and sensitive. With the Life Palace in Xu, Tai Yang is weak and Tai Yin in Chen opposite is fallen, both lights dim: much effort, little recognition. These people often care about career and family at once, burning the candle at both ends.

Tai Yang alone, facing Ju Men (Si or Hai)

Si: Tai Yang strong; Hai: Tai Yang fallen. Opposite: Ju Men; Wealth: Tian Liang; Career: Tai Yin. About 17.3% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Tai Yang alone in Si or Hai, with Ju Men opposite. In Si, Tai Yang is strong and lights up Ju Men’s shadow, bringing both eloquence and reputation; in Hai, Tai Yang is fallen, which the classics call “the setting sun”: warm-hearted but often thankless, and easily caught up in disputes.

Birth-year transformations in the Life Palace

• Tai Yang with Hua Lu (born in a Geng year): Tai Yang with Hua Lu turns warmth into real rewards: well liked, with a reputation that brings income; suited to public-facing work. In our sample, about 12.4% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Lu there.
• Tai Yang with Hua Quan (born in a Xin year): Tai Yang with Hua Quan adds leadership and influence; its words carry weight and it suits positions that need authority. In our sample, about 9.8% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Quan there.
• Tai Yang with Hua Ji (born in a Jia year): Tai Yang with Hua Ji cares intensely about reputation, fairness and older men in its life, and easily worries about other people’s business. Give within your means. In our sample, about 11.5% of people with Tai Yang in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Ji there.

Men’s and women’s charts

Men: The classics say a man with Tai Yang is “destined for honour”, and treat Tai Yang as the symbol of father and husband. A modern reading: he cares whether he can look after his family and be recognised at work, and his pressure often comes from that sense of duty.

Women: The classics say a woman with Tai Yang is “strong-natured, with a man’s ambition”. A modern reading: she is outgoing, a natural leader who speaks her mind, suited to public and management roles; in love she admires someone open, honest and responsible.

The classics were written in a traditional society, and their comments on men’s and women’s charts often carry the gender expectations of their time. We give the classical sayings alongside a modern reading, but we read charts for tendencies of character and never rank people by gender.

With auspicious stars, with Sha stars

With auspicious stars: With Tian Liang, Wen Chang, and Lu Cun or Hua Lu, the classics describe the Yang-Liang-Chang-Lu pattern, good for exams, reputation and public office; with Zuo Fu and You Bi its influence grows.

With Sha stars: With Sha stars, frankness can offend people, or warmth can drag it into other people’s disputes; fallen and with Hua Ji, it should be especially careful not to carry too much for others.

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they say nothing about whether anyone’s destiny is good or bad.
