Tian Ji in the Life Palace: What the Star of Wisdom Says About You

Tian Ji is the star of wisdom; the classics call it “good”, meaning good at planning and quick to adapt. People with Tian Ji in the Life Palace think fast and look for the method, and the loophole, in anything; they are natural strategists and planners. Curious about new things, they learn quickly and are often interested in several things at once.

The Tian Ji personality

Tian Ji’s other side is movement. It stands for change: these people change jobs, surroundings and interests often, and their minds are always moving, thinking far ahead and sometimes failing to decide at all. When you read a Tian Ji chart, look for a steadier star nearby to anchor that nimble mind.

The table shows, for each of the twelve branches where Tian Ji can sit in the Life Palace, its brightness, the major stars sharing the palace, and the major stars of the opposite, Wealth and Career palaces. These positions are fixed by the placement rules: once Tian Ji is placed, every other major star follows, so Tian Ji in a given branch always has the same palace group.

“Empty” means that palace has no major star; in a reading you borrow the major stars from its opposite palace and pay extra attention to the minor stars and transformations inside it.

Tian Ji exalted in Zi or Wu with Ju Men opposite: extremely quick, strongly analytical, good at research and argument. The intelligence here shows plainly, suited to technical work, research and planning; Ju Men opposite also brings talk and suspicion, so mind how you speak.

Tian Ji alone, facing Tian Liang (Chou or Wei)

Chou: Tian Ji fallen; Wei: Tian Ji fallen. Opposite: Tian Liang; Wealth: Tian Tong; Career: Ju Men. About 17.1% of people with Tian Ji in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Tian Ji fallen in Chou or Wei, borrowing Tian Liang from opposite. Clever but prone to overthinking, second-guessing decisions and a restless mind. The upside is Tian Liang’s shelter: at critical moments an elder or patron often steps in. Best to learn one profession and practise it steadily, rather than running too many threads at once.

The star of wisdom with the star of riches: sensitive, perceptive and romantic, good at planning and at money, a classic Ji-Yue-Tong-Liang type suited to stable organisations and professional work. This pair sits in Yin and Shen and brings plenty of change, with frequent moves and job changes; Tian Ji is only favorable in Yin and Shen, while Tai Yin is strong in Yin and fair in Shen, so Yin is the stronger of the two. Tian Ji with Ju Men (Mao or You)

The star of wisdom with the star of eloquence: strong analysis and strong persuasion, suited to research, teaching, law, consulting and sales. The classics say “Ju Men and Tian Ji together reach the rank of minister”, but mean the Mao palace specifically; in You it is just as clever, but has to work harder to show it. The classics say “Tian Ji meeting Tian Liang is good at discussing strategy”: good at ideas and advice, suited to advisory and consulting work, religion and philosophy. This pair sits in Chen and Xu, where Tian Liang is exalted, bringing the favour of elders and patrons; the lesson is plenty of armchair strategy with less execution, and a habit of minding other people’s business. Tian Ji alone in Si or Hai, borrowing Tai Yin from opposite: perceptive, thoughtful to the point of worry, and very sensitive to changes around it. Tian Ji is only neutral in both Si and Hai, which often brings a feeling of busyness, running around and shifting plans; Tai Yin’s softness makes these people more attuned to feelings, and more prone to overthinking.

• Tian Ji with Hua Lu (born in a Yi year): Tian Ji with Hua Lu turns ideas into income: good at earning from concepts, planning and expertise, and well liked. In our sample, about 13.8% of people with Tian Ji in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Lu there.
• Tian Ji with Hua Quan (born in a Bing year): Tian Ji with Hua Quan adds judgement and authority; it suits being the lead planner or project owner, with firmer opinions. In our sample, about 7.9% of people with Tian Ji in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Quan there.
• Tian Ji with Hua Ke (born in a Ding year): Tian Ji with Hua Ke is clever and orderly, suited to research, teaching and writing, and easily earns a name through expertise. In our sample, about 7.5% of people with Tian Ji in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Ke there.
• Tian Ji with Hua Ji (born in a Wu year): Tian Ji with Hua Ji thinks even more and is prone to going round in circles, so plans often stall. The upside is a meticulous eye for detail that suits in-depth research. In our sample, about 9.0% of people with Tian Ji in the Life Palace have the birth-year Hua Ji there.

Men’s and women’s charts

Men: The classics say a man with Tian Ji “would make a monk or an adviser”, meaning he works with his head rather than his hands. A modern reading: technology, planning, research and consulting suit him better than purely physical or highly repetitive work.

Women: The classics call a woman with Tian Ji “clever and ingenious”, and also warn that her mind is changeable. A modern reading: she is quick and full of ideas and suits professional work; in love she needs a partner she can talk and think things through with.

The classics were written in a traditional society, and their comments on men’s and women’s charts often carry the gender expectations of their time. We give the classical sayings alongside a modern reading, but we read charts for tendencies of character and never rank people by gender.

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they say nothing about whether anyone’s destiny is good or bad.
