Tian Fu in the Life Palace: What the Treasury Star Says About You

Tian Fu is the lead star of the Southern Dipper; the classics call it the treasury star and also the “star of command”. People with Tian Fu in the Life Palace are steady, conservative and security-minded, good at preserving and managing, and come across as reliable and magnanimous. They work step by step and dislike risk, but whatever is put in their hands is usually well looked after.

The Tian Fu personality

Tian Fu and Zi Wei both have a leader’s air; the difference is direction. Zi Wei wants to conquer new territory, Tian Fu wants to look after what it holds. Tian Fu’s great fear is the “empty treasury”: with Di Kong or Di Jie, it may look perfectly steady from outside while resources are actually tight, so financial planning deserves extra care.

Bright and fallen: where Tian Fu is strongest

Tian Fu is bright in most positions; bright, it is generous and able to both keep and manage. Tian Fu has no fallen position. In a favorable position it is just as steady, only with less presence and fewer resources. The table shows, for each of the twelve branches where Tian Fu can sit in the Life Palace, its brightness, the major stars sharing the palace, and the major stars of the opposite, Wealth and Career palaces. These positions are fixed by the placement rules: once Tian Fu is placed, every other major star follows, so Tian Fu in a given branch always has the same palace group.

“Empty” means that palace has no major star; in a reading you borrow the major stars from its opposite palace and pay extra attention to the minor stars and transformations inside it.

The twelve branches clash in opposite pairs, and each pair holds the same major stars, so Tian Fu in the Life Palace comes in only six combinations. The two branches of a pair differ in brightness and in how things look from the Travel Palace.

Wu Qu with Tian Fu (Zi or Wu)

The wealth star with the treasury star: two money stars in one palace, strong at both managing and keeping money, a very steady financial combination suited to finance, accounting and management. Chou: Tian Fu exalted; Wei: Tian Fu exalted. Opposite: Lian Zhen and Qi Sha; Wealth: empty; Career: Tian Xiang. About 17.7% of people with Tian Fu in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Tian Fu exalted in Chou or Wei, with Lian Zhen and Qi Sha opposite. Strong at preserving and reliable in how it works, with the drive of Lian Zhen and Qi Sha as well; suited to management and finance. Tian Fu is powerful here, but mind the fierce energy opposite: with Sha stars it can be soft outside and hard inside, keeping pressure to itself.

Zi Wei with Tian Fu (Yin or Shen)

Yin: Tian Fu exalted, Zi Wei strong; Shen: Tian Fu favorable, Zi Wei strong. Opposite: Qi Sha; Wealth: Wu Qu; Career: Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang. About 18.0% of people with Tian Fu in the Life Palace fall into this group.

Two leader stars in one palace: large-minded and ambitious, wanting both to build and to preserve. People with Zi Wei and Tian Fu together often seem steady and dependable, and suit being the decision-maker in an organisation. The lesson is the tug-of-war between the two forces: wanting to push ahead while fearing to lose what they have, so big decisions can stall, and it is not easy for them to climb down. Tian Fu alone in Mao or You, with Wu Qu and Qi Sha opposite. Tian Fu is steady, but it borrows the hardness and drive of Wu Qu and Qi Sha from across the chart, so these people look calm and carry ambition inside. The Wealth Palace is empty, so money has to be built up slowly by their own efforts; Tian Fu in You is strong and does better than in Mao.

Lian Zhen with Tian Fu (Chen or Xu)

This pair sits in Chen and Xu with Tian Fu exalted, the steadiest of Lian Zhen’s combinations; the downsides are conservatism and a strong defensive streak. Tian Fu, only favorable in Si or Hai, with Zi Wei and Qi Sha opposite. Tian Fu’s steadiness plus the presence of Zi Wei and Qi Sha across the chart often gives the impression of a seasoned commander who can carry the load. The lesson is expecting too much and putting too much pressure on oneself, and avoiding stubbornness.

Birth-year transformations in the Life Palace

In the ten-stem table of the Complete Book, Tian Fu takes no transformation, so people with Tian Fu in the Life Palace never have a birth-year Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke or Hua Ji on that star itself. The transformations come in through other major stars sharing the palace, minor stars such as Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, and the stars of the palace group. In other words, a Tian Fu Life Palace is moved less by the birth-year transformations, and the base colour of the personality comes mainly from Tian Fu itself and the stars beside it.

Men’s and women’s charts

Men: The classics say a man with Tian Fu is “destined for wealth and rank”, devoted to family and property. A modern reading: he is steady, reliable and keeps his word, suited to management and finance; in love he is very much the family man.

Women: The classics say a woman with Tian Fu “brings fortune to her husband and children and runs the household well”. A modern reading: she is capable, organised and security-minded, often the anchor of her family and team, suited to management and finance.

The classics were written in a traditional society, and their comments on men’s and women’s charts often carry the gender expectations of their time. We give the classical sayings alongside a modern reading, but we read charts for tendencies of character and never rank people by gender.

With auspicious stars, with Sha stars

With auspicious stars: With Zi Wei, Zuo Fu, You Bi or Lu Cun, the classics describe auspicious patterns such as “Fu and Xiang facing the court”, combining leadership with the ability to preserve.

With Sha stars: Di Kong and Di Jie are what it fears most, the “empty treasury”, strong outside and hollow within; with Qing Yang or Tuo Luo it may miss chances through caution, or quarrel with people over protecting its money.

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they say nothing about whether anyone’s destiny is good or bad.
