The Career Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: How You Work Best
Guan Lu, "office and salary", is the old name; today most people call it the career palace. Like the Wealth Palace, its triad lies on the Life–Wealth–Career triangle: who you are, how you make money and how you work are three sides of the same thing. Reading the Career Palace is not about job titles; it is about the way you get things done.
How to read the Career Palace
- Start with the major star. The star in the Career Palace describes your work style: Zi Wei wants to lead, Tian Ji works with its head, Wu Qu cares about results, Qi Sha wants a challenge. Each of the fourteen is covered below.
- Then the Life–Wealth–Career triad. The Career Palace's triad is the Life and Wealth Palaces, so work is read together with personality and the way you earn. Opposite sits the Spouse Palace: your partner and love life pull on your career.
- Look at the transformations. Hua Lu stands for opportunity and things going smoothly; Hua Quan for authority and decision-making; Hua Ke for a professional reputation; Hua Ji for caring intensely about work, with more pressure and more sticking points.
- Look at the malefic stars. Malefic stars in the Career Palace often mean competition, pressure or frequent changes; with Lu Cun, Hua Lu or a bright major star alongside, that pressure can often be turned into drive.
The Life–Wealth–Career triad: two fixed triangles
Zi Wei, Lian Zhen and Wu Qu, and Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang: these two groups always form a triad with each other. Since the Career Palace's triad is the Life and Wealth Palaces, as soon as one of these stars sits in the Career Palace, the other two must be in the Life Palace and the Wealth Palace. For example, with Qi Sha in the Career Palace, the Life Palace always holds Tan Lang and the Wealth Palace always holds Po Jun: you are sociable, your money comes through change, and at work you make your way on sheer drive. It is the same triangle as the Wealth Palace, read from another corner.

The Career Palace describes how you work and what environment suits you. Two people with Zi Wei in the Career Palace may end up one as a senior executive and the other running a small shop of their own; both are expressions of wanting to be in charge.
Myth: Hua Ji in the Career Palace means your career will fail.
Hua Ji stands for caring and fixation. People with Hua Ji here often set high standards for their work and feel a lot of pressure, which also makes them more committed than most; the thing to watch is not letting anxiety make your decisions.
Myth: an empty Career Palace means no career.
About 16.5% of charts have an empty Career Palace. You read it through the major stars of the Spouse Palace opposite and pay attention to the minor stars and transformations inside; people with an empty Career Palace are often better at adapting the way they work to their surroundings.

It cannot tell you whether you will be promoted, whether you should quit, or whether a business will succeed. Are the Career Palace and the "career palace" (Shi Ye) the same thing?
Yes. Guan Lu ("office and salary") is the classical name and Shi Ye ("career") is the modern one. Our chart uses the classical name; the articles use both.
Which palaces make up the Career Palace’s four-way set?
The opposite palace is the Spouse Palace, and the triad is the Life and Wealth Palaces. Life, Wealth and Career form one triad, so the Career Palace should be read together with the Life and Wealth Palaces.
How do you read an empty Career Palace?
