Sovereign and Ministers: the Emperor Star Needs Ministers

Zi Wei is the emperor star, and the line the classics repeat most about it is that “without Zuo Fu and You Bi it is a lonely ruler”: even the most commanding leader achieves little without capable people. This page covers the six patterns built around Zi Wei and Tian Fu, starting with the most famous and most disputed.

Sovereign and Ministers

It reads as leadership that also knows how to use people: not only strong opinions, but an ear for others, which is why such people are often pushed into roles leading a team. Zi Wei brings presence and dignity; Zuo Fu and You Bi are the hands that turn that presence into results.

This is the most disputed pattern, with at least five definitions: (1) the Complete Book, Zi Wei, Zuo Fu and You Bi all in the Life Palace; (2) a widely copied compilation, Zi Wei in the Life Palace with Fu, Xiang, Zuo, You, Chang, Qu and similar helpers around it and no Sha; (3) as (2) with no Kong or Jie either; (4) three set forms listed by iztro; (5) any chart where Zi Wei sees Zuo, You, Kui, Yue, Chang, Qu or the three transformations around it. We use the core of (2): Zi Wei in the Life Palace, Zuo Fu and You Bi both in the trines, opposite or flanking, and no Sha or Hua Ji. All three in the Life Palace is marked as the Complete Book’s form; read strictly, that only happens with Zi Wei and Po Jun at Chou or Wei in the 4th or 10th lunar month, which is very rare.

Ministers Flanking the Sovereign

Like Sovereign and Ministers, Zi Wei has Zuo Fu and You Bi, but Sha stars or Hua Ji are also around the Life Palace. Read it as having help, with friction or drain inside the team: less smooth sailing, more learning to lead an imperfect team.

Most compilations fold it into Sovereign and Ministers; the Complete Book keeps them apart (Zuo and You in the same palace versus coming from the trines or flanking). When both apply we list only Sovereign and Ministers.

In our sample about 2.2% of charts meet Ministers Flanking the Sovereign.

Zi Wei and Tian Fu Together

The emperor star and the treasury star together: steady and generous, wanting to steer and also to guard what has been built. It only occurs at Yin or Shen, always opposite Qi Sha, so from outside such people often look decisive and bold.

All five sources agree on Yin and Shen. The only difference is whether helpers are required; we judge the frame and list the helpers separately.

In our sample about 1.5% of charts meet Zi Wei and Tian Fu Together.

Zi Wei and Tian Fu are not in the Life Palace but reach it from the Wealth, Career or Travel palace. Read it as not always being the one in charge, yet often having weighty people and resources nearby to lean on.

The main compilations give four forms (Wu Qu–Tian Xiang at Yin/Shen, Lian Zhen alone at Yin/Shen, Lian Zhen–Tian Xiang at Zi/Wu, Tian Xiang alone at Chou/Wei), eight layouts with mirrors, which is what we find. A loose reading, “both anywhere in the trines and opposite”, adds ten more layouts that no source accepts.

In our sample about 5.7% of charts meet Zi Wei and Tian Fu Attending.

Fu and Xiang Attending

Tian Fu is the treasury and Tian Xiang the seal: two orderly, people-minded stars attending from Wealth and Career. It reads as warm with people, with good taste and a steady way of working, and often looked after by elders or peers.

Tian Xiang is always the fourth palace after Tian Fu, so the two are always in a trine. When they split between Wealth and Career, Tian Fu is always in Career and Tian Xiang in Wealth; the reverse never happens (checked on 16,802 charts). Three readings exist: narrow (Fu and Xiang in Wealth and Career, neither in the Life Palace: 12 layouts), the Complete Book’s (Yin-Shen as top grade) and broad (Tian Fu or Tian Xiang in the Life Palace also counts). We use the narrow one and mark Yin-Shen.

In our sample about 8.4% of charts meet Fu and Xiang Attending.

Pole Star Facing South

Zi Wei is strongest at Wu, opposite Tan Lang. A large presence with a leader’s bearing, who often needs to learn to let others do the work.

The palace is agreed. One source claims Zi Wei at Wu “always sees Zuo Fu and You Bi”, which is wrong: they are placed by birth month and are not fixed.
