Pearl Rising from the Sea: an Empty Palace Lit by Sun and Moon
Most people feel uneasy hearing their Life Palace is empty, yet one of the most famous good patterns in Zi Wei is exactly that: a Life Palace at Wei with no major star, lit by Tai Yang from Mao and Tai Yin from Hai. The classics call it Pearl Rising from the Sea.
Pearl Rising from the Sea
Conditions: An empty Life Palace at Wei, with Tai Yang at Mao and Tai Yin at Hai.
What strengthens or breaks it: Lu and helpers without the four Sha, Kong or Jie lift it; one compilation names Yi, Bing, Xin and Ren years; another asks for at least one of Zuo/You, Chang/Qu or Kui/Yue in the Life Palace and says Kong and Jie there break it most, while other Sha stars only make the road harder.

With no major star the Life Palace has no strong colour of its own, but it absorbs what the surroundings offer: Tai Yang in Wealth, Tai Yin in Career, both at their brightest. Typical descriptions are adaptable, doing better away from the home environment, with both work and income lit by Sun and Moon.
All five sources agree on the conditions; they differ only on what breaks it and on birth years. The Complete Book lists “Sun Mao, Moon Hai, Life Wei” under Sun and Moon Both Bright; we list it as Pearl Rising from the Sea and do not repeat Both Bright.

Example chart: born 12 March 1960 in the Shen hour (a Geng-Zi year), Life Palace at Wei, no major star. Helpers in the trines and opposite: Tian Kui, Tian Yue, Tai Yang Hua Lu, Tai Yin Hua Ke. Sha stars, Hua Ji and dim stars: Tuo Luo, Di Kong, Di Jie, Tian Tong Hua Ji.
Why the Life Palace is at Wei, not Chou
You will occasionally see “Life Palace at Chou”, which reverses it. With Tai Yang at Mao and Tai Yin at Hai, the trine that joins them is Wei: Wei’s trines are Hai (Career) and Mao (Wealth), with Chou opposite. Casting every chart with an empty Life Palace at Wei gives only three layouts, and only the one with Tian Tong and Ju Men opposite at Chou has Tai Yang–Tian Liang at Mao and Tai Yin at Hai. So three checks are enough: Life Palace at Wei, empty, Tong-Ju at Chou.
Myth: an empty Life Palace is bad.
Pearl Rising from the Sea is itself an empty palace. An empty Life Palace is shaped more by its opposite and trines; what matters is what shines in.
Myth: the Pearl’s Life Palace is at Chou.
It is at Wei. With Tai Yang at Mao and Tai Yin at Hai, the palace they both reach is Wei.
