Sha-Po-Lang: Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang
Sha-Po-Lang is probably the most famous phrase in Zi Wei. It is a structure rather than a verdict: Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang always stand in a trine, so if the Life Palace holds one of them, the other two land in the Wealth and Career palaces. What these charts share is motion: change, a readiness to break new ground, a life with bigger swings.
Sha-Po-Lang
Conditions: Qi Sha, Po Jun or Tan Lang in the Life Palace (the other two always sit in the Wealth and Career palaces).
What strengthens or breaks it: Sha-Po-Lang is a structural class and is neither good nor bad in itself. What the classics care about is whether helpers and Lu, Quan or Ke steady it, and whether Sha stars such as Qing Yang or Ling Xing push its drive further.

Each star has its own rhythm. Qi Sha sets a target and charges, with discipline; Po Jun tears down and rebuilds; Tan Lang wants to try everything, with wide interests and a lively social life. They take turns in the Life, Wealth and Career palaces, so for Sha-Po-Lang people work, money and character all carry a sense of movement: career changes, moves and self-made stories are common.
“Sha-Po-Lang” is a later collective name; the classics have no pattern by that title. Definitions agree; the only question is whether an empty Life Palace borrowing Sha-Po-Lang from the opposite palace counts. We say no.
In our sample about 24.9% of charts meet Sha-Po-Lang.

Why one in the Life Palace means the other two in Wealth and Career
Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang all belong to the Tian Fu group, and the distances between them are fixed: Tan Lang four palaces ahead of Qi Sha, Po Jun four behind, forming a trine. The Life Palace’s trines are the Wealth and Career palaces, so with one of the three in the Life Palace the other two are always there. We checked all 16,802 charts: no exceptions.

Named patterns inside Sha-Po-Lang
Some placements have their own names: Qi Sha alone at Zi, Wu, Yin or Shen is Qi Sha Facing the Dipper; Po Jun alone at Zi or Wu is Hero Star in Its Temple; Tan Lang with Huo Xing or Ling Xing is Fire and Greed; and Wu Qu with Tan Lang is Tan Lang and Wu Qu Together.
Myth: Sha-Po-Lang people have turbulent, unlucky lives.
Sha-Po-Lang describes rhythm, not fortune. More change also means more opportunity and adaptability; about a quarter of all charts are Sha-Po-Lang.
Myth: Sha-Po-Lang only suits bosses and founders.
“Suit going out” means environments with change and new ground: sales, projects, postings abroad and any role that keeps bringing new challenges.
Myth: an empty Life Palace opposite Qi Sha is also Sha-Po-Lang.
We do not borrow the opposite palace’s stars for patterns. An empty Life Palace is influenced by the opposite palace, but structurally it does not hold Sha-Po-Lang.
