Sun Aspects: 37 Combinations with the Other Nine Planets

The Sun is the protagonist of the chart: your core motivation and the center of your life. The house it occupies is often the area where you most want to shine. When the Sun forms an aspect with another planet, the two forces have to be read together. Below, a table first lists the Sun’s aspects to the other nine planets with how often each occurs, followed by a one-line reading for every combination; each has its own detailed page.

Percentages are the share of 8,401 charts of people born in Taipei between 1960 and 2005 with random birth times that have the aspect, using this site’s orbs. A dash marks an aspect that cannot occur in the sky.

The Sun can only conjoin Mercury and Venus

Mercury and Venus orbit inside the Earth’s orbit, so seen from Earth they never stray far from the Sun. In our calculations, Mercury gets at most about 28° from the Sun and Venus at most about 48°, both short of the distance a sextile needs. So the only major aspect the Sun makes to either planet is the conjunction. Among charts for people born 1960–2005, Sun conjunct Mercury appears in about 29.6% and Sun conjunct Venus in about 15.4%.

When the Sun is unaspected

Now and then the Sun forms no major aspect with any of the other nine planets; it is then called unaspected. In our calculations, the Sun is unaspected in about 2.4% of charts. Tradition holds that an unaspected planet works more on its own: what it stands for may come and go, or only become obvious at a certain stage of life.

A straight word: read an aspect as part of the whole chart

A single aspect describes the relationship between two planets. A chart has well over a dozen aspects on average, and they reinforce and offset one another. The same aspect in different signs and houses, with a tight orb or a loose one, can look very different in real life. Planetary positions are astronomical facts and can be calculated precisely; what an aspect means is astrological tradition, not scientific law. Sun aspects FAQ

Which Sun aspect is the best?

None of them is best. Trines and sextiles come easily; squares and oppositions bring pressure and also drive; a conjunction depends on which planet the Sun is joined to. Start with the aspect that has the smallest orb, since that is the Sun’s most noticeable interaction in your chart.

How do I find out which aspects my Sun has?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place. Our birth chart calculator lists the aspects from the tightest orb to the widest. The Sun’s aspects can mostly be worked out from the birthday alone, except for its aspect to the Moon.

What does it mean if the Sun has no aspects?

It means the Sun forms none of the five major aspects with the other nine planets, which happens in about 2.4% of charts in our calculations. The traditional reading is that the planet works more on its own: what it stands for is less tied in with the rest of the chart, standing out strongly at some times and seeming disconnected at others.
