Moon Aspects: 45 Combinations with the Other Nine Planets
The Moon is who you are in private: how you look after yourself and what you need to feel safe. The people closest to you often see your Moon more than your Sun. When the Moon forms an aspect with another planet, the two forces have to be read together. Below, a table first lists the Moon’s aspects to the other nine planets with how often each occurs, followed by a one-line reading for every combination; each has its own detailed page.

Moon aspects need a birth time more than any others
The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a half days and moves twelve to fifteen degrees a day, so two people born on the same day, one in the morning and one at night, can have different Moon aspects. In our calculations, when the birth time is unknown and the chart is cast for noon, the Moon’s aspects differ from the real ones in 66.5% of charts; a birth time one hour later changes the aspect list in 23% of charts. The Moon’s aspect to the Sun is simply the Moon phase at birth: the conjunction is the New Moon, the opposition is the Full Moon, and the squares are the first and last quarters.
When the Moon is unaspected
Now and then the Moon forms no major aspect with any of the other nine planets; it is then called unaspected. In our calculations, the Moon is unaspected in about 1.5% of charts. Tradition holds that an unaspected planet works more on its own: what it stands for may come and go, or only become obvious at a certain stage of life.
The Moon’s aspects to each planet, in one line
The Moon and the Sun
- Sun Conjunct Moon: With the Sun and Moon side by side, your will and your emotions speak the same language. You are direct and single-minded, and you find it harder to step back and see yourself from the outside.
- Sun Sextile Moon: With the Sun and Moon two signs apart, what you want to do and how you feel are different yet on speaking terms. Put some thought into coordinating them and they work together very well.
- Sun Square Moon: With the Sun and Moon at cross-purposes, what you want to do and what makes you feel safe point in different directions. You often hear two inner voices, and that is exactly where your drive comes from.
- Sun Trine Moon: With the Sun and Moon in signs of the same element, what you want to do and how you feel line up on their own. You are steady and at ease, and less inclined to push yourself past your limits.
- Sun Opposite Moon: With the Sun and Moon facing each other across the zodiac, what you want and what you need stand at opposite ends. You often meet your other half through a partner or the people close to you.
The Moon and Mercury
- Moon Conjunct Mercury: With the Moon conjunct Mercury, feelings turn into language the moment they arrive. You speak with warmth and remember well, and your mood tends to spin along with your thoughts.
- Moon Sextile Mercury: With the Moon sextile Mercury, two signs apart, what you feel and what you think can help each other. As long as you’re willing to speak up and write, your expression keeps getting more exact.
- Moon Square Mercury: With the Moon square Mercury, what your heart feels and what your head thinks often don’t line up. Your words come out too sharp or too flat, and that pushes you to make your expression more precise.
- Moon Trine Mercury: With the Moon trine Mercury, in signs of the same element, feeling and thinking connect smoothly. You speak naturally and kindly and understand quickly, and because it’s so easy you seldom refine it.
- Moon Opposite Mercury: With the Moon opposite Mercury, feeling and reasoning stand on opposite sides. You often see this tug-of-war in your conversations with others, and it trains you to take another person’s point of view.
The Moon and Venus

- Moon Sextile Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn two signs apart, feeling and discipline are compatible. Put some thought into building routines and you can grow a grounded, lasting sense of stability.
- Moon Square Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn at odds, the heart that needs care is often pressed down by duty and self-demand. The early years are hard, and long wear makes you a person who can carry real responsibility.

A straight word: read an aspect as part of the whole chart
A single aspect describes the relationship between two planets. A chart has well over a dozen aspects on average, and they reinforce and offset one another. The same aspect in different signs and houses, with a tight orb or a loose one, can look very different in real life. Planetary positions are astronomical facts and can be calculated precisely; what an aspect means is astrological tradition, not scientific law. Moon aspects FAQ
Which Moon aspect is the best?
None of them is best. Trines and sextiles come easily; squares and oppositions bring pressure and also drive; a conjunction depends on which planet the Moon is joined to. Start with the aspect that has the smallest orb, since that is the Moon’s most noticeable interaction in your chart.
How do I find out which aspects my Moon has?
Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place. Our birth chart calculator lists the aspects from the tightest orb to the widest. The Moon moves fast, so an accurate birth time matters.
What does it mean if the Moon has no aspects?
It means the Moon forms none of the five major aspects with the other nine planets, which happens in about 1.5% of charts in our calculations. The traditional reading is that the planet works more on its own: what it stands for is less tied in with the rest of the chart, standing out strongly at some times and seeming disconnected at others.
