Saturn Aspects: 45 Combinations with the Other Nine Planets
Saturn is where you feel pressure and need time to mature, and also where you eventually build real mastery. It changes sign about every two and a half years and completes a circuit in 29. When Saturn forms an aspect with another planet, the two forces have to be read together. Below, a table first lists Saturn’s aspects to the other nine planets with how often each occurs, followed by a one-line reading for every combination; each has its own detailed page.

Saturn’s aspects to the slow planets are shared by a whole group
Saturn moves slowly, spending about two and a half years in each sign. Its aspects to Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are in the charts of everyone born around the same time, and describe the common backdrop of that period. Saturn’s aspects to the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are the ones that differ from person to person, and they come first when reading an individual chart. The table shows the years since 1930 in which Saturn formed each aspect with the other slow planets:

When Saturn is unaspected
Now and then Saturn forms no major aspect with any of the other nine planets; it is then called unaspected. In our calculations, Saturn is unaspected in about 3.5% of charts. Tradition holds that an unaspected planet works more on its own: what it stands for may come and go, or only become obvious at a certain stage of life.
Saturn’s aspects to each planet, in one line
Saturn and the Sun
- Sun Conjunct Saturn: With the Sun and Saturn side by side, self and responsibility are bound into one. You were mature beyond your years, you hold yourself to high standards, and success tends to come late but stand firm.
- Sun Sextile Saturn: With the Sun and Saturn two signs apart, self and discipline get along. You know how to line up the steps toward a goal, and when you sit down and plan, steadiness works in your favor.
- Sun Square Saturn: With the Sun and Saturn at cross-purposes, the urge to show yourself runs into resistance or self-doubt. In youth you often feel tied hand and foot, and the long grind ends up building real skill.
- Sun Trine Saturn: With the Sun and Saturn in signs of the same element, self and discipline are in step from birth. You are steady and patient, and you may take that reliability for granted and shy away from risk.
- Sun Opposite Saturn: With the Sun and Saturn facing each other, the side that wants to be yourself pulls against the side of duty and authority. You keep meeting that strict judge in a boss or a partner.
Saturn and the Moon
- Moon Conjunct Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn together, emotion is wrapped in a sense of duty. You are steady, reliable, and enduring, yet used to carrying things alone and not good at asking for comfort.
- Moon Sextile Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn two signs apart, feeling and discipline are compatible. Put some thought into building routines and you can grow a grounded, lasting sense of stability.
- Moon Square Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn at odds, the heart that needs care is often pressed down by duty and self-demand. The early years are hard, and long wear makes you a person who can carry real responsibility.
- Moon Trine Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn in signs of the same element, emotion and responsibility fit together naturally. You are composed, practical, and patient, and you can get used to safety and stop seeking change.
- Moon Opposite Saturn: With the Moon and Saturn facing each other across the chart, emotional needs and real-world duties stand at two ends. You often feel demanded of or left out in the cold, and through that you learn to set boundaries.
Saturn and Mercury
- Mercury Conjunct Saturn: With Mercury conjunct Saturn, your thinking comes with a built-in review. You speak carefully and work methodically, and you often doubt whether you have it right before you even open your mouth.
- Mercury Sextile Saturn: With Mercury sextile Saturn, two signs apart, a nimble mind and steady discipline are willing to cooperate. Put in the work, and you can shape your ideas into results people can rely on.
- Mercury Square Saturn: With Mercury square Saturn, what you want to say is often stopped by self-criticism. You worry easily and fear mistakes, yet once you come through it, you have thinking that stands up to any test.
- Mercury Trine Saturn: With Mercury trine Saturn, in signs of the same element, thought and discipline cooperate naturally. Your head is clear and your words are plain, and you tend to stick with familiar methods and avoid risk.
- Mercury Opposite Saturn: With Mercury opposite Saturn, across the zodiac, the end that wants to speak freely and the end that demands accountability hold each other in check. In other people’s criticism and rules, you meet your own inner strictness.
Saturn and Venus
- Venus Conjunct Saturn: With Venus and Saturn side by side, you are careful, loyal, and commitment-minded in love, yet you often feel you are not quite good enough and need time to believe that being loved is real.
- Venus Sextile Saturn: With Venus and Saturn two signs apart, your affection comes with steadiness. You are willing to invest time in relationships and interests, and with care you can grow a spark into a bond people can count on.
- Venus Square Saturn: With Venus and Saturn at odds, you long for closeness and fear rejection. Love and self-worth are tested often, and once you have worked through it step by step, you love more solidly than anyone.
- Venus Trine Saturn: With Venus and Saturn in signs of the same element, you are faithful in love and patient with beauty. Relationships last and stay stable on their own, though so much security can leave little room for surprise.
- Venus Opposite Saturn: With Venus and Saturn facing each other across the zodiac, whenever you want closeness someone or something seems to stand in the way. You often meet coolness and demands in a partner, and need to learn to approve of yourself.
Saturn and Mars
- Mars Conjunct Saturn: With Mars and Saturn side by side, every move comes with restraint. You are slow to act but have remarkable stamina, and what feels like being tied down when you are young later turns into discipline.
- Mars Sextile Saturn: Mars and Saturn sit two signs apart, so drive and discipline are willing to cooperate. Put some thought into planning, and you can spend your energy steadily on things that take the long view.
- Mars Square Saturn: Mars and Saturn jam each other: press the gas and you hit the brake. Frustration and quiet, simmering anger come easily, but once you have weathered it you come out tough enough for hard things.
- Mars Trine Saturn: Mars and Saturn fall in signs of the same element, so drive and discipline work hand in hand. You are steady and persistent in what you do, and you can also be too rule-bound and slow to take risks.
- Mars Opposite Saturn: Mars and Saturn face each other across the chart. Whenever you want to act, someone seems to stand in the way, and you tend to see limits as a problem with your boss or partner. The lesson is taking back the lead.

A straight word: read an aspect as part of the whole chart
A single aspect describes the relationship between two planets. A chart has well over a dozen aspects on average, and they reinforce and offset one another. The same aspect in different signs and houses, with a tight orb or a loose one, can look very different in real life. Planetary positions are astronomical facts and can be calculated precisely; what an aspect means is astrological tradition, not scientific law. Saturn aspects FAQ
Which Saturn aspect is the best?
None of them is best. Trines and sextiles come easily; squares and oppositions bring pressure and also drive; a conjunction depends on which planet Saturn is joined to. Start with the aspect that has the smallest orb, since that is Saturn’s most noticeable interaction in your chart.
How do I find out which aspects my Saturn has?
Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place. Our birth chart calculator lists the aspects from the tightest orb to the widest. Saturn’s aspects can mostly be worked out from the birthday alone.
What does it mean if Saturn has no aspects?
It means Saturn forms none of the five major aspects with the other nine planets, which happens in about 3.5% of charts in our calculations. The traditional reading is that the planet works more on its own: what it stands for is less tied in with the rest of the chart, standing out strongly at some times and seeming disconnected at others.
