Sun Opposite Moon: Finding Balance Between Self and Others

With the Sun and Moon facing each other across the zodiac, what you want and what you need stand at opposite ends. You often meet your other half through a partner or the people close to you. This page starts from what the Sun governs (self, vitality and who you want to become) and what the Moon governs (emotions, security and inner needs), then looks at how the opposition makes the two interact, how it tends to show up in everyday life, its strengths and blind spots, and some advice for it.

The core meaning of Sun Opposite Moon

Sun opposite Moon means you were born around the Full Moon, when the Moon is fully lit by the Sun and the two bodies hold opposite sides of the sky. They fall in opposing signs that want opposite things yet need each other: one centered on self and one on relationship, for example, or one seeking security and one seeking change. In you, will and emotion can see each other and pull on each other, like a seesaw. When one side rises, the other reminds you that it is there.

Oppositions and squares both carry tension, but they feel different. The conflict of a square mostly circles around inside you, while the tension of an opposition tends to move into your relationships. You live out one end, and the other is acted out for you by a partner, family member, or collaborator. That is why you so easily see the piece you lack in someone else, and feel both drawn to it and irritated by it. People born at the Full Moon are usually very attuned to relationships, because they are always moving back and forth between two positions.

How it feels inside

You often feel that you want both. When you focus on your own goals, you worry about neglecting the people who matter; when you give your time to family or a partner, you feel you have strayed from your own path. This wavering does not mean you lack resolve. It comes from being able to see the value at both ends at once. The light of a Full Moon is bright, and you are usually quite clear about your own state. The harder part is accepting that these two needs do not have to produce a winner. They can take turns.

In love and relationships

Relationships are home ground for this aspect. You very much need another person to measure yourself against, and too much time alone leaves you feeling something is missing. The partners you attract tend to complement you. At first they seem to supply what you do not have, and after a while you fault them for being different from you. In your early years your parents’ roles were often sharply divided, each in charge of one side. Once you see that some of the traits that bother you in a partner are ones you have not yet claimed as your own, life together gets much lighter.

At work and in getting things done

At work you are good in roles that have to look after two sides, such as coordinating, negotiating, consulting, or any position that requires thinking from the other party’s point of view. You can look at a matter objectively because you are used to weighing the pros and cons together. The difficulty lies in dividing yourself between work and private life. You tend to swing between them, giving everything to the job for a stretch and then everything to home. Agreeing on boundaries and scheduling your time in advance costs you far less than choosing on the spot.

Advice for Sun Opposite Moon

Treat the seesaw as your rhythm instead of a flaw. You do not have to sit at the exact center forever; just remember to take turns. Lean toward your own goals for one stretch, then shift your weight back to relationships and daily life for the next. The next time some trait of your partner’s gets under your skin, first ask yourself whether it is something you also want but have never allowed yourself to have.

What to keep in mind when reading this aspect

1. The tighter the orb, the more it matters. In our calculations, only 13.6% of all major aspects are within 1° of exact, and 41.2% are within 3°. If your Sun opposite Moon is tight, the traits on this page will be more noticeable; if it is close to the 10° limit, they will be much fainter.

2. Applying and separating. An aspect is applying when the two planets are moving toward the exact angle and separating once they have passed it. Tradition holds that an applying aspect is still taking shape and acts more strongly. Our chart calculator marks which one you have.

3. Watch for out-of-sign aspects. Two planets in opposition are usually in signs directly across from each other, but an aspect is measured by actual distance. In our calculations, 12.9% of oppositions do not match the usual sign relationship (one planet late in a sign, the other early in another). The nature of the aspect is still there; it just shows up in a less typical way.

4. Moon aspects need a birth time. The Moon moves fast. In our calculations, when the birth time is unknown and the chart is cast for noon, the Moon’s aspects differ from the real ones in 66.5% of charts. If you only know your birthday, treat this aspect as provisional.

5. Then look at each planet’s own placement. The signs the Sun and the Moon are in decide how each one expresses itself; see Planets in the Signs. If either planet has other aspects, read them together. For a complete reading, use the In-Depth Chart Reading.

A straight word: read an aspect as part of the whole chart

A single aspect describes the relationship between two planets. A chart has well over a dozen aspects on average, and they reinforce and offset one another. The same aspect in different signs and houses, with a tight orb or a loose one, can look very different in real life. Planetary positions are astronomical facts and can be calculated precisely; what an aspect means is astrological tradition, not scientific law. Sun Opposite Moon FAQ

Does Sun opposite Moon mean I was born on a Full Moon?

Yes. When the Sun and Moon are one hundred eighty degrees apart, it is a Full Moon. The opposition has an orb, so anyone born within about a day and a half of the Full Moon will have this aspect in the chart. Astrological tradition holds that people born then are highly self-aware and value relationships, and are also more likely to feel the pull between two inner needs.

Do people with Sun opposite Moon have trouble in relationships?

Relationships are where this aspect is felt most deeply, but that is not the same as trouble. You are easily drawn to people who complement you, and just as easily discover your differences as you spend time together. The key is recognizing which complaints actually come from your own inner pull. People who manage that often build relationships with real depth, in which both partners grow.

How do I know whether I have Sun opposite Moon in my chart?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date and birth time and look for “Sun opposition Moon” in the aspect list. Our birth chart calculator lists the major aspects between the ten planets from the tightest orb to the widest. In our calculations, about 5.6% of charts for people born 1960–2005 have it.

What orb is used for Sun opposite Moon?

Astrologers differ; orbs of 5° to 10° are common. On this site the orb for an opposition is 8°, widened to 10° when the Sun or Moon is involved, which means it counts with the two planets 170° or more apart. The smaller the orb, the more clearly the aspect acts.
