Neptune Aspects: 40 Combinations with the Other Nine Planets
Neptune stands for dreams, inspiration and faith, and also for where you see less clearly and are prone to self-deception. It spends about 14 years in each sign. When Neptune forms an aspect with another planet, the two forces have to be read together. Below, a table first lists Neptune’s aspects to the other nine planets with how often each occurs, followed by a one-line reading for every combination; each has its own detailed page.

Neptune’s aspects to the slow planets are shared by a whole group
Neptune moves slowly, spending many years in each sign. Its aspects to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto are in the charts of everyone born around the same time, and describe the common backdrop of that period. Neptune’s aspects to the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are the ones that differ from person to person, and they come first when reading an individual chart. The table shows the years since 1930 in which Neptune formed each aspect with the other slow planets:

When Neptune is unaspected
Now and then Neptune forms no major aspect with any of the other nine planets; it is then called unaspected. In our calculations, Neptune is unaspected in about 0.9% of charts. Tradition holds that an unaspected planet works more on its own: what it stands for may come and go, or only become obvious at a certain stage of life.
Neptune’s aspects to each planet, in one line
Neptune and the Sun
- Sun Conjunct Neptune: With the Sun conjunct Neptune, imagination and sensitivity dissolve into your identity. You’re perceptive and a little otherworldly, quick to feel what others feel, and slower to say exactly who you are.
- Sun Sextile Neptune: With the Sun sextile Neptune, two signs apart, your identity and your imagination are on friendly terms. You have fine feeling and a sense of beauty, and with time and practice they become usable skills.
- Sun Square Neptune: With the Sun square Neptune, a fog rolls in whenever you try to define yourself. You tend to overrate and underrate yourself by turns, and your dreams gain real power once you’ve seen reality clearly.
- Sun Trine Neptune: With the Sun trine Neptune, in signs of the same element, your identity and imagination connect naturally. You have an inborn sense of beauty and kindness, life flows smoothly, and drifting is easy.
- Sun Opposite Neptune: With the Sun opposite Neptune, a clear self and boundless longing sit at opposite ends. You tend to rest your ideals on other people, and relationships are where you learn to see what’s real.
Neptune and the Moon
- Moon Conjunct Neptune: With the Moon and Neptune merged, your sensitivity is extremely strong. You can feel moods that people cannot put into words, and you often cannot tell which emotions are your own.
- Moon Sextile Neptune: With the Moon and Neptune two signs apart, sensitivity and imagination are yours to use. With some practice, thoughtfulness and creativity can both become abilities you can actually draw on.
- Moon Square Neptune: With the Moon and Neptune interfering with each other, your emotions are often veiled in fog. You tend to lose yourself in caring for others, and through repeated disappointment you learn to see reality clearly.
- Moon Trine Neptune: With the Moon and Neptune in signs of the same element, sensitivity and imagination flow naturally. You are gentle and a little otherworldly, and when life is too comfortable you tend to float in midair.
- Moon Opposite Neptune: With the Moon and Neptune far apart and face to face, you long to be fully understood and cared for. You tend to idealize the people near you or shoulder their problems, and the lesson is to see them as they are.
Neptune and Mercury
- Mercury Conjunct Neptune: With Mercury and Neptune side by side, you think in images and feelings. Your intuition is sharp and your imagination rich, though telling fact from fancy takes a little extra care.
- Mercury Sextile Neptune: With Mercury and Neptune two signs apart, your reasoning mind and your feeling imagination can work together. With practice, you can put hazy impressions into clear words.
- Mercury Square Neptune: With Mercury and Neptune interfering with each other, a layer of fog gets in the way whenever you try to get things straight. Mix-ups and distraction come easily, yet with real practice your expression becomes unusually moving.
- Mercury Trine Neptune: With Mercury and Neptune in signs of the same element, thought and imagination flow into each other. Your words carry poetry and kindness, and you can easily sink into a world of your own.
- Mercury Opposite Neptune: With Mercury and Neptune facing each other from afar, one end insists on the facts and the other longs for boundless imagination. In what others tell you, the real and the embellished are hard to tell apart.
Neptune and Venus
- Venus Conjunct Neptune: With Venus and Neptune side by side, you love with a thick layer of imagination. You are gentle, romantic, and full of feeling for beauty, and you find it harder to see a person as they really are.
- Venus Sextile Neptune: With Venus and Neptune two signs apart, there is thoughtfulness and imagination in love for you to draw on. If you are willing to cultivate them, they become real skill in beauty and empathy.
- Venus Square Neptune: With Venus and Neptune at odds, there is often a gap between the ideal love in your heart and the person in front of you. You are easily disappointed, and it pushes you to learn to tell imagination from what is real.
- Venus Trine Neptune: With Venus and Neptune in signs of the same element, tenderness, imagination, and a feeling for beauty flow naturally. You are generous with people, and things go so smoothly that you can drift with the current.
- Venus Opposite Neptune: With Venus and Neptune facing each other, you often place a perfect image on a partner and swing between rescuing and being rescued. The homework is to take that ideal back.
Neptune and Mars
- Mars Conjunct Neptune: With Mars and Neptune on top of each other, your motivation follows imagination and feeling. For an ideal you can do beautiful work, and when the goal is hazy your energy tends to scatter.
- Mars Sextile Neptune: Mars and Neptune sit at a compatible angle, so action and inspiration are on the same line. If you are willing to practice hands-on, you can turn the picture in your mind into something real, step by step.
- Mars Square Neptune: Mars and Neptune hold each other back. When you want to act, doubt, fantasy, or a sense of powerlessness trips you up. Once you learn to see the goal clearly, you become a person of real resilience.
- Mars Trine Neptune: Mars and Neptune answer each other in the same element. Your actions naturally carry inspiration and consideration, and your work has a fluid grace. Because it comes so easily, you may never really sprint.
- Mars Opposite Neptune: Mars and Neptune face each other across the chart, and your own will is often in a tug-of-war with other people’s needs, expectations, or fog. The lesson is working out which of your energy should stay with you.
Neptune and Jupiter
- Jupiter Conjunct Neptune: When Jupiter and Neptune come together, faith and dreams blur into one. People born in that window tend to be idealistic and soft-hearted, and they easily picture things as rosier than they are.
- Jupiter Sextile Neptune: With Jupiter and Neptune two signs apart, belief and imagination get along well, and those willing to put in some thought can turn a vague longing, step by step, into something doable.
- Jupiter Square Neptune: Jupiter and Neptune snag on each other here, so what you want to believe does not line up with what you actually see. This group is prone to high hopes and letdowns, and learns from them to tell real from false.
- Jupiter Trine Neptune: With Jupiter and Neptune in signs of the same element, confidence and imagination feed each other. This group is big-hearted and inspired, and when life goes smoothly they are also inclined to drift.
- Jupiter Opposite Neptune: Jupiter and Neptune hold opposite ends, one wanting to expand and believe, the other wanting to dissolve and devote itself. Through a partner or a teacher, this group often sees its own ideals and illusions reflected back.

- Saturn Conjunct Neptune: When Saturn and Neptune meet, reality and dreams are bound into one project, and people born in those couple of years often work in earnest to give an unseen ideal a concrete form.
- Saturn Sextile Neptune: With Saturn and Neptune two signs apart, practicality and imagination can help each other, and people born in this period can find a workable path for their ideals once they are willing to get to work.
- Saturn Square Neptune: Saturn and Neptune get in each other’s way here, one side calling dreams impractical and the other calling reality cold, and people born in this period often grind their beliefs into something truer through doubt.
- Saturn Trine Neptune: With Saturn and Neptune in signs of the same element, a sense of reality and imagination get along by nature, and people born in this period work with both flair and method, usually without noticing it.

A straight word: read an aspect as part of the whole chart
A single aspect describes the relationship between two planets. A chart has well over a dozen aspects on average, and they reinforce and offset one another. The same aspect in different signs and houses, with a tight orb or a loose one, can look very different in real life. Planetary positions are astronomical facts and can be calculated precisely; what an aspect means is astrological tradition, not scientific law. Neptune aspects FAQ
Which Neptune aspect is the best?
None of them is best. Trines and sextiles come easily; squares and oppositions bring pressure and also drive; a conjunction depends on which planet Neptune is joined to. Start with the aspect that has the smallest orb, since that is Neptune’s most noticeable interaction in your chart.
How do I find out which aspects my Neptune has?
Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place. Our birth chart calculator lists the aspects from the tightest orb to the widest. Neptune’s aspects can mostly be worked out from the birthday alone.
What does it mean if Neptune has no aspects?
It means Neptune forms none of the five major aspects with the other nine planets, which happens in about 0.9% of charts in our calculations. The traditional reading is that the planet works more on its own: what it stands for is less tied in with the rest of the chart, standing out strongly at some times and seeming disconnected at others.
