Sun Conjunct Moon: What You Want and What You Need Are One
With the Sun and Moon side by side, your will and your emotions speak the same language. You are direct and single-minded, and you find it harder to step back and see yourself from the outside. This page starts from what the Sun governs (self, vitality and who you want to become) and what the Moon governs (emotions, security and inner needs), then looks at how the conjunction makes the two interact, how it tends to show up in everyday life, its strengths and blind spots, and some advice for it.

The core meaning of Sun Conjunct Moon
The Sun is who you are trying to become; the Moon is whatever makes you feel safe. When the two are conjunct, you were born around a New Moon, when the Moon cannot be seen in the sky because it is traveling in the same direction as the Sun. In a person, that means there is almost no gap between “what I want” and “what I need.” You throw yourself into the things you love and cannot fake interest in the things you dislike. Your feelings and your decisions tend to arrive together, and the people around you can read your current state without much effort.
That unity gives you power, and it also leaves you without a mirror. Most people carry two inner voices that keep each other in check. You are closer to having one, so you judge quickly but do not easily notice where you have drifted off course. The two planets usually share a sign, which makes that sign’s qualities especially concentrated in you: the strengths are obvious, and so are the habits. People with this aspect often rely on a close friend or partner to show them the side of themselves they take for granted.
How it feels inside
Your mood is tied to your goals. When things are moving the way you want, you feel solid all the way through; when the direction is wrong, even eating and sleeping feel off. You rarely struggle with knowing you should do something while your heart refuses. Either all of you is willing or all of you resists. The upside is that you waste little energy fighting yourself. The hard part comes when something has to be done and you do not like it, because there is no second self available to talk you into it.
In love and relationships
In love you are wholehearted, and also quite subjective. When you fall for someone, the center of your life shifts toward them, and they can clearly feel that they matter. But you tend to understand the relationship through your own feelings, so needs that differ from yours often go unnoticed until your partner spells them out. The partners who suit you usually have firm opinions of their own and can pull you out of your own rhythm long enough to look at the full picture of the two of you.
At work and in getting things done
At work you belong in roles you can commit to completely. Once you decide something is worth doing, you pour your time, effort, and feelings into it without needing anyone to push you. That kind of focus is a real advantage in starting a business, in creative work, or in any field that rewards years of steady cultivation. What to watch is that you can hardly force yourself through tasks that bore you, and your personal likes and dislikes slip into your judgment. A colleague or manager who tells you the plain truth helps more than you might expect.
Strengths
- All of a piece: What you think and what you feel point the same way, so your words and actions carry one consistent force. People trust you because they can tell you are not just going through the motions.
- Total commitment: Once you choose a direction you can put your whole self into it. Little energy is lost to inner tug-of-war, and over the years you often build more depth than others do.
- The drive to begin: People born at the New Moon often have the courage to start over. A blank page does not scare you much, you are willing to build from nothing, and you do not cling to what has ended.
Blind spots
- Hard to see yourself: With no inner point of contrast, it is difficult to check yourself from a distance. Habits and blind spots usually have to be pointed out by someone else before they finally click.
- Strongly subjective: You use your own feelings as the yardstick and easily assume others think the way you do. In situations that call for give and take, you may overlook differing views without meaning to.
- Likes and dislikes on display: What you enjoy and what you do not are written on your face. It is hard to push yourself through things that leave you cold, and keeping up appearances is not your strong suit.
Advice for Sun Conjunct Moon
Your strength comes from being all of a piece, and your homework is to find yourself a mirror. Before a major decision, make a point of asking someone who thinks differently from you. You do not have to follow the advice; just hear it all the way through. Jotting down a few lines about your mood each day also helps. When you look back after a while, you will see the patterns that keep repeating, which is exactly the part you cannot see while standing inside it.
What to keep in mind when reading this aspect
1. The tighter the orb, the more it matters. In our calculations, only 13.6% of all major aspects are within 1° of exact, and 41.2% are within 3°. If your Sun conjunct Moon is tight, the traits on this page will be more noticeable; if it is close to the 10° limit, they will be much fainter.
2. Applying and separating. An aspect is applying when the two planets are moving toward the exact angle and separating once they have passed it. Tradition holds that an applying aspect is still taking shape and acts more strongly. Our chart calculator marks which one you have.
3. Watch for out-of-sign aspects. Two planets in conjunction are usually in the same sign, but an aspect is measured by actual distance. In our calculations, 15.6% of conjunctions do not match the usual sign relationship (one planet late in a sign, the other early in another). The nature of the aspect is still there; it just shows up in a less typical way.
4. Moon aspects need a birth time. The Moon moves fast. In our calculations, when the birth time is unknown and the chart is cast for noon, the Moon’s aspects differ from the real ones in 66.5% of charts. If you only know your birthday, treat this aspect as provisional.
5. Then look at each planet’s own placement. The signs the Sun and the Moon are in decide how each one expresses itself; see Planets in the Signs. If either planet has other aspects, read them together. For a complete reading, use the In-Depth Chart Reading.

A straight word: read an aspect as part of the whole chart
A single aspect describes the relationship between two planets. A chart has well over a dozen aspects on average, and they reinforce and offset one another. The same aspect in different signs and houses, with a tight orb or a loose one, can look very different in real life. Planetary positions are astronomical facts and can be calculated precisely; what an aspect means is astrological tradition, not scientific law. Everything on this site is for reference and entertainment only; for health, investment or legal matters, please consult a professional.

Sun Conjunct Moon FAQ
Does Sun conjunct Moon mean my Sun and Moon are in the same sign?
Usually, but not always. A conjunction is measured by the actual distance between the two bodies, and it counts as long as they are within orb. If the Sun sits in the last few degrees of one sign and the Moon in the first few degrees of the next, they are still conjunct while belonging to different signs. In that case the sense of inner unity is a little weaker, and both signs need to be read.
What is special about being born on a New Moon?
Sun conjunct Moon simply means you were born around the New Moon. Astrological tradition treats the New Moon as the start of a cycle, so people born then tend to act on instinct and momentum, enjoy starting new things, and spend little time second-guessing. On the other hand, looking back to review and seeing a situation from another person’s side are skills that take deliberate practice.
How do I know whether I have Sun conjunct Moon in my chart?
Cast a birth chart with your birth date and birth time and look for “Sun conjunction Moon” in the aspect list. Our birth chart calculator lists the major aspects between the ten planets from the tightest orb to the widest. In our calculations, about 5.3% of charts for people born 1960–2005 have it.
What orb is used for Sun conjunct Moon?
Astrologers differ; orbs of 5° to 10° are common. On this site the orb for a conjunction is 8°, widened to 10° when the Sun or Moon is involved, which means it counts with the two planets within 10° of each other. The smaller the orb, the more clearly the aspect acts.
