The Mind Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu: What You Really Need Inside
The Life Palace is the self you show other people; the Mind Palace is who you are when you are alone: what you really care about, how you cheer yourself up, where you retreat when the pressure is on. For many people the Life Palace and the Mind Palace look like two different people: full of drive on the outside but longing for security inside, easygoing on the outside but never done thinking inside. Reading the Mind Palace means reading that contrast.
How to read the Mind Palace
- Start with the major star. The star in the Mind Palace describes your inner needs and how you enjoy life: Tian Tong knows how to enjoy things, Tian Ji can't stop thinking, Tan Lang wants novelty, Tian Fu wants security. Each of the fourteen is covered below.
- Compare with the Life Palace. The stars of the Mind and Life Palaces have a fixed structural relationship; read the two together to see the gap between your outer and inner self.
- Look at the Wealth–Mind axis. Opposite the Mind Palace is the Wealth Palace, so your state of mind decides how the money gets spent; its triad is the Travel and Spouse Palaces, tying your inner life to how you come across and how you love.
- Look at transformations and malefic stars. Hua Lu here makes you easy to satisfy; Hua Ji means you care intensely inside and tend to overthink; malefic stars often mean it is hard for you to relax.
Outside and inside: the fixed link between the Life and Mind Palaces
The Life Palace always sits two palaces backward from the Mind Palace, and the fourteen major stars always keep the same positions relative to each other, so eight stars fix the Life Palace as soon as they land in the Mind Palace. It mirrors the Spouse Palace: the Spouse Palace is two palaces on one side of the Life Palace, the Mind Palace two palaces on the other.

The Wealth, Travel and Spouse Palaces: other fixed links
The Mind, Travel and Spouse Palaces form a triad, and Zi Wei, Lian Zhen and Wu Qu, and Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang, always form triads too. Tian Fu always faces Qi Sha and Tian Xiang always faces Po Jun, so when those four stars are in the Mind Palace, the star of the Wealth Palace opposite is fixed as well.
