Decades, Years and Months: Three Layers of Time on Your Natal Chart

The natal chart describes who you are, but nobody stays in the same state for life. Decades, years and months lay time over the chart: on the same chart, a different palace takes the lead every ten years, every year and every month. Once you see how the layers stack, you can tell what is character and what is just the weather of a period.

Four layers of time in one table

Ages are counted the Chinese way: you are one at birth and add a year at every Chinese New Year. So decades change at the lunar new year, not on your birthday.

Decades: a new stage every ten years

Whichever palace the decade reaches becomes that decade’s Life Palace, and the other eleven palaces are renamed from it. Our chart tool labels this as “natal Wealth Palace (decade Career)”: the palace is your Wealth Palace by birth, and for these ten years it plays the Career Palace. The natal name is who you are; the decade name is the script for these ten years. Read the two together.

Here are the first eight decades of our example chart (born 10 July 1990 at noon, male, Fire-6 bureau, Yang male moving forward):

At 36–45 the decade reaches the natal Property Palace, whose stem is Geng, the same as the birth-year stem. The decade transformations are therefore identical to the birth-year ones, as if the natal Lu, Quan, Ke and Ji were underlined a second time. In a decade like this the themes of the natal chart tend to stand out.

Why two decades always share the same transformations

Palace stems are laid out with the Five Tigers rule starting from the Yin palace. Ten stems cover twelve palaces, so the last two repeat: the Zi and Yin palaces always share a stem, and so do the Chou and Mao palaces, on every chart. In the example, ages 6–15 (Chou) and 26–35 (Mao) both have the Ji stem, so their decade transformations are the same; only the stage moves. In our sample about half of all people (50.0%) meet such a repeated pair within their first seven decades.

The direction depends on sex and the Yin or Yang of the birth year: a boy and a girl born at the same moment have the same natal chart but walk their decades in opposite directions. See how a Zi Wei chart is cast.

The annual chart: a new Life Palace every year

The annual Life Palace is the palace of that year’s branch. Everyone’s annual Life Palace therefore sits on the same branch in a given year; what differs is which natal palace occupies that branch on each chart. After twelve years it comes round again. Annual transformations use the year stem, so they are also the same for everyone: in the Bing-Wu year 2026 they are Tian Tong Hua Lu, Tian Ji Hua Quan, Wen Chang Hua Ke and Lian Zhen Hua Ji. What differs is where those stars sit on your chart.

In 2026 the example chart is 37 by Chinese count, in the decade of the natal Property Palace (36–45); the annual Life Palace is the Wu palace, which is his natal Friends Palace. To read the annual Hua Ji, look at the role its palace plays this year: Lian Zhen Hua Ji falls in the annual Mind Palace, so what he keeps turning over this year is his own mood and state of mind; and with the annual Life Palace on his natal Friends Palace, the year centres on friends, colleagues and his network.

Tradition also has a “minor period” (xiao xian), started from the birth-year branch and moving forward for men and backward for women, one palace a year; some teachers use it as the annual Life Palace. This site uses the palace of the year branch and does not cast minor periods. If another site gives you a different annual Life Palace, check which method it uses first.

Months: find the 1st month with the Dou Jun

The monthly layer starts from the Dou Jun. Take the annual Life Palace as the 1st month and count backwards to your birth month; take that palace as the Zi hour and count forwards to your birth hour. Where you stop is the 1st month of the year, and each month after moves one palace forward. The month stem follows the Five Tigers rule from the year stem.

For the example chart in 2026: the annual Life Palace is Wu. He was born on the 18th of a leap 5th month, which this site counts as the 6th month (days 16 onward of a leap month belong to the next month). Counting back from Wu to the 6th month reaches Chou; counting forward from Chou as the Zi hour to the Wu hour reaches Wei, his natal Travel Palace. The twelve months of 2026:

In the 7th month the monthly Life Palace returns to his natal Life Palace, the month of the year that feels most like himself. The monthly Hua Ji changes star and palace every month, so a Hua Ji in one month is nothing to worry about on its own; what matters is whether it lands on the same palace as the decade or annual Hua Ji.

Days: for picking dates only

The daily layer starts the 1st of the lunar month in that month’s Life Palace and moves one palace a day, with transformations from the day stem. It changes every day and carries the least weight: useful for choosing which day suits a conversation, not for describing a person. How to read the stack: big to small, each layer inside the one above

1. Read the natal chart first: character and base colour, fixed for life.
2. Then the decade: which natal palace hosts the decade Life Palace, and where the decade transformations fall. That is the theme of the ten years.
3. Look for the year’s focus inside the decade’s theme: the annual Life Palace and transformations tell you which part of the ten-year script plays this year.
4. Use months and days for timing: do not let one month overturn the direction of a decade.

The upper layer sets the tone; the lower layers set the rhythm. What deserves real attention is several layers pointing at the same thing, for example the decade and annual Hua Ji in the same palace, or the same star taking Hua Ji both at birth and in the decade. A Hua Ji that shows up in only one layer is usually just something you care about more during that period.

How we counted: this site’s engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample), 16,802 charts in all. These figures describe how chart structures are distributed; they say nothing about whether anyone’s destiny is good or bad.

Nearly half of all people will live through a decade whose Hua Ji sits in their own Life Palace, and a decade with Hua Lu there is about as common. A ten-year stretch of self-doubt or hard work, and a ten-year stretch that runs smoothly, are both ordinary parts of a life, not the fate of a few. For the decade figures each date was cast for both a male and a female chart, counting the first seven decades (to roughly the mid-seventies).
