The Hurting Officer is the Ten God the Day Master produces, with the opposite polarity. With a Hurting Officer Structure, the point is whether helping gods on the stems support it, and whether anything there breaks it.
What is the Hurting Officer Structure?
The Hurting Officer is the Ten God the Day Master produces, with the opposite polarity. It stands for creativity, a quick tongue, refusing to lose and the urge to break rules. The classics count it among the harsh stars, used by restraining it: Resource reins it in ("wearing Resource"), or it is put to producing Wealth. Its great fear is the Direct Officer; "the Hurting Officer meets the Officer" is one of the best-known ill omens in the classics. In today's world, though, the Hurting Officer's originality and refusal to conform are exactly what many fields pay most for.
How it is taken: when the Hurting Officer hidden in the month branch shows on the year, month or hour stem, or when none of the hidden stems shows and the Main Qi is the Hurting Officer, the chart is a Hurting Officer Structure. It is a structure used by restraining it (ni yong, 逆用).
How we counted: using this site's structure rules, our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about how far anyone will go.

There is one famous exception: the Metal-Water Hurting Officer welcomes the Officer. For a Geng or Xin Metal Day Master born in winter (Hai, Zi or Chou month), the Hurting Officer is Water and the whole chart runs cold, so the Direct Officer (Fire) works as climate adjustment and does not break the structure. In our sample, about 4.4% of Hurting Officer Structures fall into this case.

- Taking the structure: Yin month hides Jia, Bing and Wu. The Main Qi Jia Wood does not show and the Middle Qi Bing Fire is Rob Wealth (skipped); the Residual Qi Wu Earth sits on the month stem. To Ding Fire, Wu is the Hurting Officer, so this is a Hurting Officer Structure.
- Making factors: Yi Wood on the year stem is Indirect Resource, so the Hurting Officer wears Resource; Geng Metal on the hour stem is Direct Wealth, so the Hurting Officer produces Wealth.
- Breaking factors: no Direct Officer on the stems, so the Hurting Officer does not meet the Officer.
- Strength: Ding Fire is strong and favors Metal, Earth and Water. The Hurting Officer and Wealth are both favorable, so talent has room to flow out.

The classics often equate a structure that "holds" with wealth and rank, and a "broken" one with poverty and low standing. A reading closer to today is this: the structure tells you what a chart is built around, what holds it up, and where it is most easily thrown off. A structure that holds does not promise an easy life, and a broken one is not failure. Plenty of broken charts grow their real strengths in the work of mending the break.
