The Direct Resource Structure in BaZi: Made by the Officer feeding Resource, broken by greed for Wealth
Direct Resource is the Ten God that produces the Day Master, with the opposite polarity. With a Direct Resource Structure, the point is whether helping gods on the stems support it, and whether anything there breaks it.
What is the Direct Resource Structure?
Direct Resource is the Ten God that produces the Day Master, with the opposite polarity. It stands for learning, qualifications, elders, mentors and protection. A Direct Resource Structure is built around standing on knowledge and credentials: it values character and good name, and often enjoys the backing of elders. It is a benevolent star, used by supporting it: let the Officer feed it, and keep Wealth from breaking it.
How it is taken: when the Direct Resource hidden in the month branch shows on the year, month or hour stem, or when none of the hidden stems shows and the Main Qi is the Direct Resource, the chart is a Direct Resource Structure. It is a structure used by supporting it (shun yong, 順用).
How we counted: using this site's structure rules, our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about how far anyone will go.

The Direct Resource Structure with a strong or weak Day Master
- Strong: When Resource is plentiful and the Day Master strong, Resource itself grows too heavy ("a doting mother smothers the child"). Then Wealth is not a breaking factor but the remedy that clears the excess; see illness and remedy under favorable elements.
- Weak: A weak Direct Resource Structure runs most smoothly: Resource feeds the Day Master directly, and learning and mentors are real help.

- Taking the structure: Chen month hides Wu, Yi and Gui. The Main Qi Wu Earth does not show and the Middle Qi Yi Wood is Rob Wealth (skipped); the Residual Qi Gui Water sits on the hour stem. To Jia Wood, Gui is Direct Resource, so this is a Direct Resource Structure.
- Making factors: Geng Metal on the month stem is Seven Killings. The Killings produce Resource: Officer produces Resource.
- Breaking factors: no Wealth on the stems, so Resource is not broken.
- Strength: Jia Wood is close to balanced and favors Water and Wood. The Gui Water Direct Resource is a favorable element.

The classics often equate a structure that "holds" with wealth and rank, and a "broken" one with poverty and low standing. A reading closer to today is this: the structure tells you what a chart is built around, what holds it up, and where it is most easily thrown off. A structure that holds does not promise an easy life, and a broken one is not failure. Plenty of broken charts grow their real strengths in the work of mending the break.
