The Direct Officer Structure in BaZi: A clean Officer, most afraid of the Hurting Officer and mixing
The Direct Officer is the Ten God that controls the Day Master with the opposite polarity. With a Direct Officer Structure, the point is whether helping gods on the stems support it, and whether anything there breaks it.
What is the Direct Officer Structure?
The Direct Officer is the Ten God that controls the Day Master with the opposite polarity. It stands for rules, standing, responsibility and recognition. When the month branch sets up a Direct Officer Structure, the chart is built around finding a firm place within a system: keeping the rules, caring about reputation, being willing to carry weight. The classics count the Officer among the four "benevolent stars," to be used by supporting it: give it a source and protection, rather than attacking it.
How it is taken: when the Direct Officer hidden in the month branch shows on the year, month or hour stem, or when none of the hidden stems shows and the Main Qi is the Direct Officer, the chart is a Direct Officer Structure. It is a structure used by supporting it (shun yong, 順用).
How we counted: using this site's structure rules, our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about how far anyone will go.

The Direct Officer Structure with a strong or weak Day Master
- Strong: This is the ideal case: the Day Master can carry the responsibility, and the Officer usefully reins in an overly strong self.
- Weak: The Officer turns into pressure. What helps most is Resource, "Officer and Resource in sequence," turning responsibility into experience and standing.

- Taking the structure: Yin month hides Jia, Bing and Wu. Neither the Main Qi Jia Wood nor the Middle Qi Bing Fire shows, but the Residual Qi Wu Earth sits on the month stem. To Gui Water, Wu is the Direct Officer, so this is a Direct Officer Structure.
- Making factors: Xin Metal on the hour stem is Indirect Resource. The Officer produces Resource and Resource supports the Day Master: Officer and Resource in sequence.
- Breaking factors: no Hurting Officer and no Seven Killings on the stems, and the Yin month branch is not clashed. The structure is clean.
- Strength: Gui Water is weak and favors Metal and Water. Resource is one of the favorable elements, so this making factor is also real help.

The classics often equate a structure that "holds" with wealth and rank, and a "broken" one with poverty and low standing. A reading closer to today is this: the structure tells you what a chart is built around, what holds it up, and where it is most easily thrown off. A structure that holds does not promise an easy life, and a broken one is not failure. Plenty of broken charts grow their real strengths in the work of mending the break.
