Tai Yang + Tai Yin is one of the sixty Life Palace star groups in Zi Wei Dou Shu and appears in the Chou and Wei branches. First we look at how these stars behave in Zi Wei, then where they land on the four MBTI axes, and finally we set the two systems side by side.
Tai Yang + Tai Yin in Zi Wei
Tai Yang (the Sun) and Tai Yin (the Moon) share a palace only in Chou and Wei: one rules the day, the other the night, placed in the same spot, which the old texts call “Sun and Moon in one palace.” Their brightness is exactly reversed between the two palaces. In Chou, Tai Yang is not favorable and Tai Yin is exalted, so moonlight outshines sunlight; such people are mostly subtle and reserved, thinking more than they say. In Wei, Tai Yang is favorable and Tai Yin not, sunlight has the upper hand, and they are more willing to step up and pitch in. With the same stars, the personality's center of gravity moves with the palace, and that is the first thing to sort out when reading this pairing.
Both the opposite palace and the Wealth Palace are empty of major stars; in the triangle there is only Tian Liang in the Career Palace. Tian Liang is the sheltering star, with a flavor of elders, care and principle, so people with Sun and Moon together often play the soothing, coordinating, advice-giving role at work. Having many empty palaces also means their surroundings pull on them more noticeably than with other star systems: with a gentle team they open up; in high-pressure settings they close up. On the four MBTI axes: ENFJ
These are the star-group scores (Life Palace in full, opposite palace half, Wealth and Career a quarter each); positive leans E, N, T, J and negative leans I, S, F, P. An axis at 0 is a tie at the star-group level; we default to ENFJ’s letter.
At the star-system level this axis is an exact tie: outgoing Tai Yang adds 2 points, inward Tai Yin subtracts 2, they cancel in the same palace, and no other star in the triangle adds or subtracts. The site defaults to E, and an individual chart is decided by the Mind Palace and Body Palace. Judging by brightness, those in Chou, where the moon is brighter, may read as more introverted.

Reading Tai Yang + Tai Yin in ENFJ terms
In ENFJ language, Sun and Moon together is someone led by Extraverted Feeling (Fe): they care a great deal about whether the people around them are doing well, actively adjust the mood and look after those who have gone unnoticed. The auxiliary works like Introverted Intuition (Ni), often sensing a step ahead who is uncomfortable inside and where a relationship is heading next. Tai Yang supplies the willingness to give and Tai Yin the considerate sense of proportion; together, they are the friend who remembers your birthday and also remembers that last time you said you didn't want to be asked about a certain thing.
But the E here is a default after a tie. Typical ENFJ descriptions have someone happy to step in front of people; this group is more like “warm and lively in a familiar circle, quiet once in unfamiliar settings.” It isn't surprising if those in Chou read more like INFJ.
Similarities and differences
What it shares with ENFJ
- Caring for people is almost instinct
- Tai Yang's giving and Tai Yin's consideration match the ENFJ's Extraverted Feeling, which puts others' needs first. Both describe someone who thinks of others first; whoever is left out or has been wronged in a group, they are often the first to notice.
- Sharp at reading the mood
- The old texts say Tai Yin governs feeling and Tai Yang governs human warmth; MBTI says Fe reads the room and Ni reads people's hearts. Both say this group's emotional radar is very sensitive, and both warn of the same thing: taking in too much of other people's emotion wears you out.
- Guiding people toward better
- Tian Liang in the Career Palace carries a flavor of mentoring juniors, which fits the ENFJ's love of helping people grow. At work they are often pushed into being team lead, training newcomers, or being the one everyone goes to when something is on their mind.
Where Zi Wei and MBTI differ
- Chou and Wei: one bright, one dim
- MBTI gives everyone of the same type the same description; Zi Wei says the moon is bright in Chou and the sun bright in Wei, so of the same pairing, one leans reserved and the other outgoing. This palace-by-palace reading is beyond what four letters can do.
- Empty palaces amplify surroundings
- The opposite palace and Wealth Palace have no major stars, which Zi Wei reads as these people being easily shaped by their surroundings. MBTI treats preferences as relatively stable inner tendencies and says little about “a different environment, a different person.”
- Extravert by day, introvert by night
- MBTI asks people to pick E or I; Sun and Moon together ties at the star-system level, and a more realistic description is E-like by day and I-like at night. The site defaults to E, but this axis is the least certain part of the whole group.
- Transformations tip the balance
- Born in a Jia year, Tai Yang takes Hua Ji; born in a Yi year, Tai Yin takes Hua Ji. With the same pairing, whichever star takes Hua Ji makes emotions on that side especially heavy. MBTI has no birth-year variable.

Is Sun and Moon in the Life Palace an ENFJ or an INFJ?
The site places Sun and Moon together at ENFJ, but the E/I axis ties at the star-system level and E is only a default. In Chou, Tai Yin is exalted and Tai Yang not favorable, which may read closer to INFJ; in Wei, Tai Yang is favorable, closer to ENFJ. In the end it depends on where the Mind Palace and Body Palace fall.
How does Tai Yang + Tai Yin in Chou differ from Wei?
It comes down to which one is brighter. In Chou, Tai Yin is exalted and Tai Yang not favorable, so the personality leans subtle and reserved, focused on inner feelings; in Wei, Tai Yang is favorable and Tai Yin not, so they are more outgoing and willing to step up. The triangle is the same in both, with only Tian Liang in the Career Palace, so the difference comes mainly from this bright-and-dim contrast.
