Tai Yang alone (opposite Tai Yin) × MBTI: closest to ENFJ
Tai Yang alone (opposite Tai Yin) is one of the sixty Life Palace star groups in Zi Wei Dou Shu and appears in the Chen and Xu branches. First we look at how these stars behave in Zi Wei, then where they land on the four MBTI axes, and finally we set the two systems side by side.
Tai Yang alone (opposite Tai Yin) in Zi Wei
Tai Yang (the Sun) sits alone in Chen or Xu, and the opposite palace always holds Tai Yin (the Moon), the Sun and Moon facing each other across the chart. The two palaces differ enormously. In Chen, Tai Yang is strong and Tai Yin opposite in Xu is also strong, which the Complete Book praises as “Sun in Chen, Moon in Xu, shining together”, a form of Ri Yue Bing Ming (Sun and Moon both bright; see the patterns page): Tai Yang is warm and generous, and Tai Yin sends subtlety and calm from across the way. In Xu, Tai Yang is not favorable and Tai Yin opposite in Chen is fallen, which the old texts call Ri Yue Fan Bei (Sun and Moon turned away): both lights are weak, and the usual reading is a harder early life that requires going the extra mile on one's own, though some become more understanding of others because of it.
With Tai Yang alone, the keynote of the personality is openness, giving and caring about one's good name; Tai Yin opposite is like the other half of the inner self, rarely shown day to day but surfacing when they need quiet and to be looked after. Ju Men (the Great Gate) in the Wealth Palace means money mostly comes through eloquence and expertise, with a need to watch for disputes over money. The Career Palace has no major star, so career direction is more flexible and tends to adjust to the people and opportunities they meet.

On the four MBTI axes: ENFJ
These are the star-group scores (Life Palace in full, opposite palace half, Wealth and Career a quarter each); positive leans E, N, T, J and negative leans I, S, F, P.
Extraversion is 0.88, a mild E. Tai Yang itself has 2 points, but Tai Yin opposite at ×0.5 takes off 1 and Ju Men in the Wealth Palace takes off a bit more, leaving less than 1 point. Those with Tai Yang not favorable in Xu may actually read as more introverted.
Intuition is 0.88, a mild N. Tai Yang contributes nothing on this axis; the score is held up by 0.5 from Tai Yin opposite and 0.375 from Ju Men in the Wealth Palace, so the sense of intuition isn't strong.
Feeling is 1.5, a moderate F. Tai Yang and Tai Yin opposite each pull 1 point toward feeling, and Ju Men in the Wealth Palace reasons things out and pulls 0.5 back.
Judging is 1.25, a moderate J. Tai Yang's sense of duty gives 1 point and Tai Yin opposite adds 0.25: a regular life, but not a rigid one.
Reading Tai Yang alone (opposite Tai Yin) in ENFJ terms
In ENFJ language, this group is a “lighter ENFJ”: Extraverted Feeling (Fe) is still the keynote, willing to look after people and caring about group harmony, but none of the four axis scores is large, so the personality is more flexible and less vivid than typical descriptions. Tai Yin opposite gives their Introverted Intuition (Ni) a feeling tone, and they often judge by gut whether a person can be trusted.
In Chen, with Sun and Moon both strong, they read close to the textbook ENFJ: warm, infectious and happy to step forward. In Xu, with Sun and Moon turned away, they are often the ENFJ who is “warm on the outside, exhausted inside,” using Fe very hard, looking after everyone, then getting home to find no one is looking after them. One type, two ways of experiencing life: that is what makes this group most worth reading.

What it shares with ENFJ
- Only at ease when giving warmth
- Tai Yang governs giving, and the ENFJ's Extraverted Feeling also puts caring for others first. Both describe someone who only feels settled after helping; when friends are in trouble, this is often the first person they call.
- People come first in decisions
- Tai Yang and Tai Yin both lean toward feeling, and the ENFJ's judgments also weigh people's feelings heavily. When these people choose a job or make a decision, “will this upset anyone?” often comes to mind before “is it worth it?”
- Taking roles and duties seriously
- The J-leaning ENFJ fits a dutiful Tai Yang: both care about the role they should play in a group, keep their promises, and hope others will too.
Where Zi Wei and MBTI differ
- Bright or dim: two lives, one type
- MBTI gives people in Chen and Xu the same ENFJ; Zi Wei separates Chen, with Sun and Moon both strong, from Xu, with Sun and Moon turned away: one shines with the flow, the other walks against the light. Four letters can't hold this difference between bright and dim.
- The opposite palace as the inner half
- Reading the opposite palace in Zi Wei is like reading the side a person usually doesn't show: Tai Yang outside, Tai Yin inside. MBTI does talk about an “inferior function,” but it doesn't map it to a concrete position and brightness.
- Small scores aren't mediocre
- In MBTI a small score means the preference is near the middle; in Zi Wei, this group's scores are small because Sun and Moon pull against each other. Both systems see the same result but give different reasons.

Does Sun and Moon turned away (Ri Yue Fan Bei) mean a harder life?
The old texts describe Sun and Moon turned away as both lights being weak, commonly with a busier, harder early life that depends on one's own effort. That is a tendency, not a verdict: Hua Lu, Hua Quan, favorable stars joining in, or smooth time periods all change how it actually plays out. Plenty of people also become more considerate of others precisely because their early years were hard.
Is the MBTI different for Tai Yang in Chen versus Xu?
The site's scoring looks only at major stars and position weights, so both palaces come out ENFJ. But in Xu, Tai Yang is not favorable and Tai Yin opposite is fallen, so extraversion and warmth are both weaker and the person may actually read closer to INFJ or ISFJ; in Chen, with Sun and Moon both strong, they are closer to the typical ENFJ.
