Moon in the 12 Houses: What Each Placement Means

The Moon is who you are in private: how you look after yourself and what you need to feel safe. The people closest to you often see your Moon more than your Sun. The house Moon falls in shows which area of life this energy mostly goes into. The table below compares all twelve placements, and each one has its own detailed page.

“Taipei share” is the percentage of 8,401 charts of people born in Taipei between 1960 and 2005, with random birth times, that have Moon in that house (Placidus). The most common is the 8th house (8.8%) and the least common the 2nd house (7.6%); the difference comes from house sizes changing with latitude and season.

The Moon also passes through all twelve houses in a day

Like the Sun, the Moon is carried through the twelve houses every day by the Earth’s rotation, but it rises about fifty minutes later each day, so the Moon’s house depends on both your time of birth and the lunar phase that day. If you were born near a full Moon, your Moon is roughly in the house opposite your Sun; near a new Moon, it is usually in the same house as the Sun.

Where Moon feels most at home

Traditionally every planet has “natural houses”: the houses that match the zodiac order of the signs it rules. For Moon that is the 4th house. Classical astrology also speaks of a planet’s “joy”: Moon is most at ease in the 3rd house. In these houses the planet’s themes and the house’s themes point the same way, so it expresses itself more easily. Other houses are not worse; Moon’s nature just has to be translated into the language of that area of life.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses fall into three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most outwardly visible, and planets there are easily noticed; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) build up and consolidate; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) lean toward adjusting, learning and working behind the scenes. If your Moon is in an angular house, its qualities are often the first thing others notice about you.

Things to keep in mind

You need an accurate birth time to calculate houses. In our calculations, a birth time one hour later moves Moon to another house about 48.2% of the time; with whole sign houses, Moon lands in a different house about 50.5% of the time. If Moon is near a house cusp, read both houses.

A straight word: houses need an accurate birth time

Which sign a planet is in can mostly be worked out from your birthday alone; which house it is in depends on a birth time accurate to within minutes and the right birthplace. In our own calculations, a one-hour difference in birth time moves at least one planet into another house in more than 90% of charts. So before reading this page, check where your birth time comes from (a birth certificate is more reliable than family memory), and if a planet sits near a house cusp, read both houses. Moon in the houses FAQ

Which house is best for Moon?

No house is best. The natural houses (4th house) let Moon work more smoothly, but in any other house Moon simply puts its energy into a different area of life. What matters is how well you use that house’s themes, and Moon’s sign and aspects.

How do I find out which house my Moon is in?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place; you can use our birth chart calculator. The more accurate the birth time, the better: in our calculations, a one-hour difference moves Moon to another house about 48.2% of the time.

Placidus and whole sign houses put my Moon in different houses. Which should I use?

Both are legitimate. Placidus is the most widely used system today, and whole sign houses are the classical method; in our calculations the two give a different house for Moon about 50.5% of the time. Read both and see which fits your life better; our chart calculator can switch between them.
