Mercury in the 12 Houses: What Each Placement Means

Mercury describes how you think and how you speak. It never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so it is always in your Sun sign or one sign either side. The house Mercury falls in shows which area of life this energy mostly goes into. The table below compares all twelve placements, and each one has its own detailed page.

“Taipei share” is the percentage of 8,401 charts of people born in Taipei between 1960 and 2005, with random birth times, that have Mercury in that house (Placidus). The most common is the 1st house (8.9%) and the least common the 6th house (7.6%); the difference comes from house sizes changing with latitude and season.

Mercury is usually in the same house as the Sun, or next door

Mercury never gets far from the Sun in the sky (Mercury at most about 28°, Venus about 47°), so its house is tied to the Sun’s. In our calculation for people born in Taipei, Mercury is in the same house as the Sun about 51.8% of the time and within one house about 100% of the time. When you read Mercury’s house, check where your Sun is too; the two are often talking about the same part of life.

Where Mercury feels most at home

Traditionally every planet has “natural houses”: the houses that match the zodiac order of the signs it rules. For Mercury that is the 3rd house and 6th house. Classical astrology also speaks of a planet’s “joy”: Mercury is most at ease in the 1st house. In these houses the planet’s themes and the house’s themes point the same way, so it expresses itself more easily. Other houses are not worse; Mercury’s nature just has to be translated into the language of that area of life.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses fall into three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most outwardly visible, and planets there are easily noticed; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) build up and consolidate; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) lean toward adjusting, learning and working behind the scenes. If your Mercury is in an angular house, its qualities are often the first thing others notice about you.

Things to keep in mind

You need an accurate birth time to calculate houses. In our calculations, a birth time one hour later moves Mercury to another house about 50.2% of the time; with whole sign houses, Mercury lands in a different house about 50.9% of the time. If Mercury is near a house cusp, read both houses.

A straight word: houses need an accurate birth time

Which sign a planet is in can mostly be worked out from your birthday alone; which house it is in depends on a birth time accurate to within minutes and the right birthplace. In our own calculations, a one-hour difference in birth time moves at least one planet into another house in more than 90% of charts. So before reading this page, check where your birth time comes from (a birth certificate is more reliable than family memory), and if a planet sits near a house cusp, read both houses. Mercury in the houses FAQ

Which house is best for Mercury?

No house is best. The natural houses (3rd house and 6th house) let Mercury work more smoothly, but in any other house Mercury simply puts its energy into a different area of life. What matters is how well you use that house’s themes, and Mercury’s sign and aspects.

How do I find out which house my Mercury is in?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place; you can use our birth chart calculator. The more accurate the birth time, the better: in our calculations, a one-hour difference moves Mercury to another house about 50.2% of the time.

Placidus and whole sign houses put my Mercury in different houses. Which should I use?

Both are legitimate. Placidus is the most widely used system today, and whole sign houses are the classical method; in our calculations the two give a different house for Mercury about 50.9% of the time. Read both and see which fits your life better; our chart calculator can switch between them.
