Mars in the 12 Houses: What Each Placement Means

Mars is how you go after what you want and how you get angry, and it is the source of stamina and push. It circles the zodiac in about two years, spending six to eight weeks in each sign. The house Mars falls in shows which area of life this energy mostly goes into. The table below compares all twelve placements, and each one has its own detailed page.

Where Mars feels most at home

Traditionally every planet has “natural houses”: the houses that match the zodiac order of the signs it rules. For Mars that is the 1st house and 8th house. Classical astrology also speaks of a planet’s “joy”: Mars is most at ease in the 6th house. In these houses the planet’s themes and the house’s themes point the same way, so it expresses itself more easily. Other houses are not worse; Mars’s nature just has to be translated into the language of that area of life.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses fall into three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most outwardly visible, and planets there are easily noticed; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) build up and consolidate; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) lean toward adjusting, learning and working behind the scenes. If your Mars is in an angular house, its qualities are often the first thing others notice about you.

Things to keep in mind

You need an accurate birth time to calculate houses. In our calculations, a birth time one hour later moves Mars to another house about 49.9% of the time; with whole sign houses, Mars lands in a different house about 51.3% of the time. If Mars is near a house cusp, read both houses.

A straight word: houses need an accurate birth time

Which sign a planet is in can mostly be worked out from your birthday alone; which house it is in depends on a birth time accurate to within minutes and the right birthplace. In our own calculations, a one-hour difference in birth time moves at least one planet into another house in more than 90% of charts. So before reading this page, check where your birth time comes from (a birth certificate is more reliable than family memory), and if a planet sits near a house cusp, read both houses. Mars in the houses FAQ

Which house is best for Mars?

No house is best. The natural houses (1st house and 8th house) let Mars work more smoothly, but in any other house Mars simply puts its energy into a different area of life. What matters is how well you use that house’s themes, and Mars’s sign and aspects.

How do I find out which house my Mars is in?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place; you can use our birth chart calculator. The more accurate the birth time, the better: in our calculations, a one-hour difference moves Mars to another house about 49.9% of the time.

Placidus and whole sign houses put my Mars in different houses. Which should I use?

Both are legitimate. Placidus is the most widely used system today, and whole sign houses are the classical method; in our calculations the two give a different house for Mars about 51.3% of the time. Read both and see which fits your life better; our chart calculator can switch between them.
