Where Saturn feels most at home

Traditionally every planet has “natural houses”: the houses that match the zodiac order of the signs it rules. For Saturn that is the 10th house and 11th house. Classical astrology also speaks of a planet’s “joy”: Saturn is most at ease in the 12th house. In these houses the planet’s themes and the house’s themes point the same way, so it expresses itself more easily. Other houses are not worse; Saturn’s nature just has to be translated into the language of that area of life.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses fall into three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most outwardly visible, and planets there are easily noticed; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) build up and consolidate; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) lean toward adjusting, learning and working behind the scenes. If your Saturn is in an angular house, its qualities are often the first thing others notice about you.

Things to keep in mind

You need an accurate birth time to calculate houses. In our calculations, a birth time one hour later moves Saturn to another house about 50.6% of the time; with whole sign houses, Saturn lands in a different house about 49.2% of the time. If Saturn is near a house cusp, read both houses.

A straight word: houses need an accurate birth time

Which sign a planet is in can mostly be worked out from your birthday alone; which house it is in depends on a birth time accurate to within minutes and the right birthplace. In our own calculations, a one-hour difference in birth time moves at least one planet into another house in more than 90% of charts. So before reading this page, check where your birth time comes from (a birth certificate is more reliable than family memory), and if a planet sits near a house cusp, read both houses. Saturn in the houses FAQ

Which house is best for Saturn?

No house is best. The natural houses (10th house and 11th house) let Saturn work more smoothly, but in any other house Saturn simply puts its energy into a different area of life. What matters is how well you use that house’s themes, and Saturn’s sign and aspects.

How do I find out which house my Saturn is in?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place; you can use our birth chart calculator. The more accurate the birth time, the better: in our calculations, a one-hour difference moves Saturn to another house about 50.6% of the time.

Placidus and whole sign houses put my Saturn in different houses. Which should I use?

Both are legitimate. Placidus is the most widely used system today, and whole sign houses are the classical method; in our calculations the two give a different house for Saturn about 49.2% of the time. Read both and see which fits your life better; our chart calculator can switch between them.
