The Sun’s house is tied directly to your time of birth
The Earth turns once a day, so the Sun passes through all twelve houses every day: at sunrise it is on the Ascendant (the boundary between the 1st and 12th houses), it climbs through the 12th and 11th houses, reaches the Midheaven (the 10th house cusp) around noon, moves through the 9th and 8th in the afternoon, reaches the Descendant (the 7th house cusp) at sunset, and spends the night below the horizon in the 6th through 1st houses. So if you know your time of birth, you can roughly guess your Sun’s house. Our calculation for people born in Taipei:

Where Sun feels most at home
Traditionally every planet has “natural houses”: the houses that match the zodiac order of the signs it rules. For Sun that is the 5th house. Classical astrology also speaks of a planet’s “joy”: Sun is most at ease in the 9th house. In these houses the planet’s themes and the house’s themes point the same way, so it expresses itself more easily. Other houses are not worse; Sun’s nature just has to be translated into the language of that area of life.
Angular, succedent and cadent houses
The twelve houses fall into three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most outwardly visible, and planets there are easily noticed; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) build up and consolidate; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) lean toward adjusting, learning and working behind the scenes. If your Sun is in an angular house, its qualities are often the first thing others notice about you.
Things to keep in mind
You need an accurate birth time to calculate houses. In our calculations, a birth time one hour later moves Sun to another house about 49.4% of the time; with whole sign houses, Sun lands in a different house about 51.5% of the time. If Sun is near a house cusp, read both houses.

A straight word: houses need an accurate birth time
Which sign a planet is in can mostly be worked out from your birthday alone; which house it is in depends on a birth time accurate to within minutes and the right birthplace. In our own calculations, a one-hour difference in birth time moves at least one planet into another house in more than 90% of charts. So before reading this page, check where your birth time comes from (a birth certificate is more reliable than family memory), and if a planet sits near a house cusp, read both houses. Sun in the houses FAQ
Which house is best for Sun?
No house is best. The natural houses (5th house) let Sun work more smoothly, but in any other house Sun simply puts its energy into a different area of life. What matters is how well you use that house’s themes, and Sun’s sign and aspects.
How do I find out which house my Sun is in?
Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place; you can use our birth chart calculator. The more accurate the birth time, the better: in our calculations, a one-hour difference moves Sun to another house about 49.4% of the time.
Placidus and whole sign houses put my Sun in different houses. Which should I use?
Both are legitimate. Placidus is the most widely used system today, and whole sign houses are the classical method; in our calculations the two give a different house for Sun about 51.5% of the time. Read both and see which fits your life better; our chart calculator can switch between them.
