Jupiter in the 12 Houses: What Each Placement Means

Jupiter shows where luck comes easily and where you tend to overdo it. It changes sign about once a year, so people born in the same year usually share a Jupiter sign. The house Jupiter falls in shows which area of life this energy mostly goes into. The table below compares all twelve placements, and each one has its own detailed page.

“Taipei share” is the percentage of 8,401 charts of people born in Taipei between 1960 and 2005, with random birth times, that have Jupiter in that house (Placidus). The most common is the 8th house (8.7%) and the least common the 11th house (8%); the difference comes from house sizes changing with latitude and season.

Where Jupiter feels most at home

Traditionally every planet has “natural houses”: the houses that match the zodiac order of the signs it rules. For Jupiter that is the 9th house and 12th house. Classical astrology also speaks of a planet’s “joy”: Jupiter is most at ease in the 11th house. In these houses the planet’s themes and the house’s themes point the same way, so it expresses itself more easily. Other houses are not worse; Jupiter’s nature just has to be translated into the language of that area of life.

Angular, succedent and cadent houses

The twelve houses fall into three groups. Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the most outwardly visible, and planets there are easily noticed; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) build up and consolidate; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) lean toward adjusting, learning and working behind the scenes. If your Jupiter is in an angular house, its qualities are often the first thing others notice about you.

Things to keep in mind

You need an accurate birth time to calculate houses. In our calculations, a birth time one hour later moves Jupiter to another house about 50% of the time; with whole sign houses, Jupiter lands in a different house about 54.6% of the time. If Jupiter is near a house cusp, read both houses.

A straight word: houses need an accurate birth time

Which sign a planet is in can mostly be worked out from your birthday alone; which house it is in depends on a birth time accurate to within minutes and the right birthplace. In our own calculations, a one-hour difference in birth time moves at least one planet into another house in more than 90% of charts. So before reading this page, check where your birth time comes from (a birth certificate is more reliable than family memory), and if a planet sits near a house cusp, read both houses. Jupiter in the houses FAQ

Which house is best for Jupiter?

No house is best. The natural houses (9th house and 12th house) let Jupiter work more smoothly, but in any other house Jupiter simply puts its energy into a different area of life. What matters is how well you use that house’s themes, and Jupiter’s sign and aspects.

How do I find out which house my Jupiter is in?

Cast a birth chart with your birth date, time and place; you can use our birth chart calculator. The more accurate the birth time, the better: in our calculations, a one-hour difference moves Jupiter to another house about 50% of the time.

Placidus and whole sign houses put my Jupiter in different houses. Which should I use?

Both are legitimate. Placidus is the most widely used system today, and whole sign houses are the classical method; in our calculations the two give a different house for Jupiter about 54.6% of the time. Read both and see which fits your life better; our chart calculator can switch between them.
