Princess Diana’s BaZi: Yi Wood Parched in Midsummer

Princess Diana (1961–1997) has the weakest chart in this series so far. Her Day Master is Yi Wood, the stem of flowers, grasses and climbing vines, born in the Wu month, the hottest of the year, with almost no Water in the chart. There are also two accounts of her birth time, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, each with a different hour pillar. Fortunately, when all twelve hours are cast the verdict is the same. This page reads mainly from the three certain pillars and follows this midsummer Yi Wood through the years when the whole world was watching her.

Birth data: two accounts

No official record of the time was made at her birth, and her parents remembered it differently. Britain was on summer time in July 1961, with clocks an hour ahead, so whichever account you take, first subtract 60 minutes, then correct for longitude and the equation of time. “Around 2 p.m.” converts to a moment right on the boundary between the Wu and Wei hours, which makes it even harder to pin down.

In cases like this we do what we did on the Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) page: cast all twelve hours and see whether the verdict changes.

Every hour scores between 0.11 and 0.29: weak in all twelve, favoring Water and Wood in all twelve. Whether she was born in the afternoon or the evening, the overall direction of this chart does not change, and the luck pillars are identical under both accounts. The reading below works mainly from the three certain pillars and only sets the two hour pillars side by side where it matters.

Three pillars: Yi Wood in midsummer

Our strength engine: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

This chart has two problems at once: it is weak and it is dry. The Day Master finds only a small root of Yi Wood in the day branch Wei, not enough to carry a chart full of Wealth and Seven Killings; and summer Fire and Earth bake the chart dry, which our climate (tiao hou) rule flags as “hot and dry, short of Water”. So Water does two jobs here: it is the Resource that feeds Yi Wood, and it is the climate fix that moistens the chart. The thing the chart needs most is exactly what it has least.

In the old imagery, this is a flower at noon in high summer: the sunlight is strong and the stage is bright, but the soil is dry and the roots are shallow. It needs water, and it needs something beside it to climb.

Luck pillars: three unfavorable steps in a row

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Xin is yin), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 3. Both birth times give exactly the same luck pillars.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

From 1973, three consecutive luck pillars are unfavorable in both stem and branch: Bing-Shen, Ding-You, Wu-Xu. Fire, Metal and Earth take turns, and not one step brings the Water she needs most. Her whole journey from an aristocratic teenager to the most photographed woman in the world falls inside these three pillars.

This needs saying clearly: an unfavorable luck pillar is not “bad luck”, and it certainly does not mean “no achievement”. In these years she became a princess, a mother and a charity campaigner with global reach, and all of that was real. In this chart an unfavorable pillar is closer to “always paying a price”: the bigger her stage, the more pressure, scrutiny and wear she had to absorb. Several people in this series did their biggest work in unfavorable luck; Elon Musk, who became the world’s richest man during a Direct Wealth pillar in which Wealth is unfavorable for him, is another example.

A few key years

1981 is a Xin-You year, with Seven Killings in both stem and branch. Traditionally a woman’s Officer and Seven Killings stars represent her husband, so marrying that year fits the old rule of “the year the husband star appears”. We only explain the tradition; we do not use a chart to comment on anyone’s marriage.

1995 is a Yi-Hai year: the stem Yi Wood is Friend and the branch Hai Water is Resource, so stem and branch are both favorable, a rare favorable year inside her run of unfavorable luck. That year, for the first time, she told her own story in her own voice, facing the camera. We list the parallel and take it no further.

Princess Diana died in Paris in August 1997, aged 36. We do not use BaZi to discuss lifespan or accidents, on this page or any other famous chart.

Where does the chart miss her real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

In the palace-corrected 19:45 version, the Life Palace (in You) holds Tai Yang and Tian Liang together, with Tai Yang taking Quan and Lu Cun in the same palace, and the Body Palace falls in the Travel Palace. Tai Yang with Tian Liang is the combination of someone who looks after others and cares about public good; Tai Yang Quan adds public influence, and a Body Palace in Travel puts the center of gravity out in the world. The 14:00 afternoon version instead puts Wu Qu and Tian Fu in the Life Palace, with the Body Palace in the same place: a practical, conserving pair of wealth stars. The two versions describe almost two different people. It is easy to link the Tai Yang–Tian Liang version to her later charity work, but that is exactly where hindsight bias creeps in: we know what she did, so of course that version looks more like her. On the BaZi side all twelve hours agree (weak Yi Wood, favoring Water and Wood), but Zi Wei cannot decide reliably between the two times, so, as with the BaZi chart, we show both and do not pick a side.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

In the 19:45 version the Cancer Sun sits in the 7th house (partners and marriage), with the Moon in Aquarius and Sagittarius rising. A Cancer Sun centers on home and protection, and placed in the house of partnership it matches the fact that the most watched theme of her life was marriage and family. A Sagittarius Ascendant is warm, informal and always heading into the crowd, which fits the way she broke down the royal distance. The Moon squares Venus with an orb of 0.6°; the traditional reading is a pull between emotions that need freedom and the way one wants to be loved. In the 2 p.m. version the Ascendant becomes Libra and the Sun moves to the 9th house, but the Cancer Sun and Aquarius Moon stay the same. BaZi reads her as weak Yi Wood favoring Water and Wood, which sits well beside this Cancer-plus-Aquarius pairing of “longing to be cared for while needing to stay herself”.

With the other birth time, the chart becomes:

Planets move very little in a day, so the Sun and Mercury through Pluto are almost identical in both versions. What changes most is the Ascendant and the houses: the whole wheel turns by roughly one house every two hours.

Domicile, exaltation, fall and detriment in brackets are the classical categories for how comfortably a planet works in a sign; they are not verdicts of good or bad.
