Elon Musk’s BaZi: How Does a “Balanced-to-Weak” Chart Make the Richest Man in the World?

Elon Musk’s birth time is recorded in his authorized biography, and it gives the chart Xin-Hai, Jia-Wu, Jia-Shen, Wu-Chen (辛亥 甲午 甲申 戊辰). Most people imagine the richest man in the world would have a grand chart: a strong Day Master and Wealth stars everywhere. What actually comes out is Jia Wood born in summer with shallow roots; our engine scores it only a hair above the weak threshold, and Wealth is listed as unfavorable. This page lays the chart out clearly first, then takes one question seriously: where does the gap between the chart and his fortune come from?

Birth data: where the time comes from, and how reliable it is

The birth hour actually has a lot of room for error. Pretoria lies west of its standard meridian (30° E), and with the equation of time at the end of June the clock has to be wound back by about 10 minutes, so 7:30 becomes roughly 7:20 in true solar time, still inside the Chen hour (7:00–9:00). In other words, if he was actually born anywhere between about 7:10 and 9:10 by the clock, the chart is the same.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

Count the hidden stems as well and Wealth (Earth) is the most plentiful element in this chart: the Wu month branch hides Ji, the Shen day branch hides Wu, and the Wu-Chen hour pillar is Earth throughout. Wealth is abundant and there are two Officer stars (Xin and Geng), while the only real help for Jia Wood is the Jia on the month stem, the Ren and Jia inside Hai, the Yi and Gui inside Chen, and the Ren inside Shen.

Strength: balanced, but right on the edge of weak

Our strength engine scores the season, roots, exposed stems, Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output, with adjustments for branch combinations and clashes; below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong. Full rules are on the method page.

The score is 0.356; another 0.006 less and it would drop into weak. The engine’s reasoning: no seasonal support (the Wu month is not Wood’s season), but it has roots (both Hai and Chen contain Wood) and it has Resource (the Ren and Gui Water inside Hai, Shen and Chen). So the Day Master is not about to collapse; it simply cannot carry too much. The favorable elements are Water (Resource) and Wood (companions) to support the self, and the unfavorable ones are Earth (Wealth) and Metal (Officer), which would only add to the load.

One more point is worth making: he was born in the southern hemisphere. June is winter in South Africa, and our climate (tiao hou) rule flips the seasons for southern births. The result is “the chart runs cold, but already has Fire,” so no extra Fire is added. On the usual northern-hemisphere method, the Wu month is midsummer and the climate calls for Water. Either way the final favorable elements are Water and Wood, so this chart is not affected by the hemisphere debate.

Three key features of the chart

1. Hurting Officer holds the month: the main qi of the Wu month branch is Ding, which is Hurting Officer to Jia Wood. Hurting Officer people do not accept existing rules and like to take the ready-made thing apart and build it again. Here the Hurting Officer does not show on a stem; it is hidden in the month branch, more a deep-seated temperament than rebellion worn on the sleeve.
2. Sitting on Seven Killings, with Shen and Chen drawing in Water: the Shen day branch is Seven Killings, which stands for high pressure and risk. Shen sits next to the Chen hour branch and together they pull toward Water; add a Zi and it becomes the full Shen-Zi-Chen Water combination. Water is Jia Wood’s Resource, so Seven Killings feeds Resource and Resource feeds the self, a flow called “Killings and Resource support each other” (sha yin xiang sheng): the greater the pressure, the more it turns into usable resources.
3. Indirect Wealth on the hour pillar: Indirect Wealth is money that flows, money from bets and leverage. Wu Earth shows on the stem and sits on Chen Earth below, so this Wealth has roots. The hour pillar traditionally stands for later life and results, and can be read as “what the final harvest looks like.”

The gap between the chart and “richest man in the world” comes from five places

By now the question is obvious: how does a balanced-to-weak chart, with Wealth as an unfavorable element, belong to the richest person on Earth? Here are the five points we see, taken one at a time.

1. BaZi reads structure, not the size of a fortune

Rough estimate: the UN Population Division puts 1971 births worldwide at about 120 million; spread evenly over days and two-hour periods, times a male share of about 51.5%. An order of magnitude, not a precise figure.

Roughly 14,000 boys around the world were born on the same day and in the same two-hour period as Musk. They share the same four pillars and almost the same rhythm of ups and downs in their luck pillars. Only one of them became the richest man in the world. What BaZi can tell you is a person’s structure: how they make money, what pressure they carry, which years rise and which fall. It does not label “how much money this person will have.” The same rise and fall might mean a raise and a layoff at a small firm in Taipei, and a swing of hundreds of billions of dollars in Silicon Valley’s capital markets.

2. Not strong does not mean not rich: Wealth being unfavorable means “there is a price”

Many people take “unfavorable element” to mean “you won’t have it.” It is closer to “something that brings a burden.” Someone whose Wealth is unfavorable can still make money, but when the money comes, body and life pay a heavy price. The traditional name is “heavy Wealth, weak Day Master” (cai duo shen ruo).

His richest luck pillar shows it clearly. From 2018 to 2027 he walks the Ji-Chou Direct Wealth pillar, whose stem Ji Earth combines with the Jia Wood Day Master: Wealth comes straight to his door. Yet 2018 (Wu-Xu), the year this pillar began, was the year he himself called the most painful: Model 3 production stalled, he slept on the factory floor, and a single tweet led to an SEC fine and his stepping down as Tesla’s chairman. Money poured in over that decade, but every dollar came with pressure, controversy and sleepless nights. That is what “Wealth unfavorable” looks like.

3. His money is the Indirect Wealth kind: paper wealth that swings wildly

Most of Musk’s net worth is company stock, not cash in the bank. When the share price moves, his net worth moves by tens of billions of dollars. From the peak in November 2021 to the end of 2022 his paper fortune shrank by about US$180 billion, and Guinness World Records listed it as the largest loss of personal fortune in history.

That is exactly how Indirect Wealth behaves: fast in, fast out, magnified by leverage. The Wu-Chen hour pillar with Indirect Wealth on the stem says his money was always going to move this way. In BaZi, Indirect Wealth labels the nature of the money, not the amount.

4. He can carry it because of Resource and companions: other people’s resources, and a team

When a Day Master that is not strong has to carry great Wealth, the traditional answer is Resource (backing, support, endorsement) and companions (partners, a team). Those are exactly this chart’s favorable elements.

Look back at his career and almost every time he pulled through, he did not do it alone. In 2008 both companies were close to missing payroll; in December SpaceX won a NASA resupply contract worth about US$1.6 billion, and Tesla closed a funding round on Christmas Eve. Government contracts, investors, subsidies, tens of thousands of engineers: this is what Resource and companions look like in real life. Sitting on Seven Killings with Shen and Chen drawing in Water, the “Killings and Resource support each other” flow, can be read in his case as: the bigger the risk, the better he gets outside resources to carry it.

5. The era and the place multiply it: BaZi has no column for that

The dot-com bubble, more than a decade of the lowest interest rates in history, the industry cycles of electric cars and commercial space, and American capital markets willing to give a company that lost money for years a sky-high valuation: none of this is in a BaZi chart. BaZi can say “this person is suited to charge ahead in certain years,” but how big the market he charged into was is decided by the times. Leave the same chart in South Africa in 1990, or have it born in another country, and the multiplier is completely different.

Luck pillars: one step every ten years, against the turning points of his life

For a man born in a yin year (the year stem Xin is yin), the luck pillars run backwards, starting at age 8. The years below are the change-over years computed by our engine; the actual change falls mid-year, so a year either side counts as a transition.

The first two pillars are Resource pillars (Gui-Si Direct Resource, Ren-Chen Indirect Resource), which is exactly when he was studying, teaching himself and leaving home to study abroad; Resource stands for learning and absorbing. The third, Xin-Mao Direct Officer, has an Officer on the stem and Rob Wealth on the branch (Mao): in this decade he began to hold “titles,” and kept wrestling with co-founders and boards; in 2000 he was even removed as CEO of a company he had founded.

Four key years up close

2008 is the year that best explains this chart: the day branch is clashed (Seven Killings in Shen shaken by Yin) and in the same year the Water combination is completed (Resource appears). From the outside it looked like “nearly died, then got rescued by outside resources.” Killings and Resource supporting each other is no promise of smooth sailing; it means that when you are pushed to the wall, something is there to catch you.

What comes next: the Wu-Zi pillar from 2028

From 2028 he enters the Wu-Zi Indirect Wealth pillar. Two things happen at once in this pillar:

• When Zi Water arrives, the Shen-Zi-Chen Water combination is complete. The partial combination that was missing only Zi becomes a full Resource combination for the whole decade, and Water is one of his favorable elements.
• Zi clashes Wu, the month branch. Wu is his Hurting Officer and the only Fire in the chart, and the month branch stands for foundations and environment.

A favorable combination forming on one side and the month branch clashed on the other is traditionally read as a period of “big changes, but with something to lean on.” The stem Wu Earth is Indirect Wealth and unfavorable too, so the swings in money will not be small. We do not make predictions such as “he will get richer” or “he will lose his fortune”; all we can say is that this will be the stretch of the second half of his life in which the chart changes most visibly.

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Musk’s Zi Wei chart has Tian Ji and Tai Yin together in the Life Palace (the Yin palace), joined by Tian Yue and Ling Xing. The Wealth Palace holds Tian Tong and the Career Palace Tian Liang, so the Life, Wealth and Career palaces together form the pattern known as “Ji Yue Tong Liang” (機月同梁). In the classical texts this is the pattern of the civil servant and the steady institution, almost the opposite of a life spent founding companies and famous for taking risks. It is another case in this series where the Zi Wei chart plainly does not fit. The part that does fit is Tian Ji: the star of intellect in the Life Palace, curious about anything new, full of shifting ideas. Wen Chang Ji (the Ji transformation) in the Career Palace can also be read as an almost obsessive devotion to work and expertise. BaZi reads him as balanced Jia Wood favoring Water and Wood (on the southern-hemisphere method), and Zi Wei’s Tian Ji and Tai Yin also lean toward brainwork and planning, but neither system shows his appetite for risk.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

The BaZi section above asked whether the climate adjustment should change for the southern hemisphere, and Zi Wei has the same argument. One school says anyone born south of the equator should add six months to the lunar month so that the seasons line up. Our Zi Wei tool does not adjust by default. But if you flip it the way that school says, Musk’s Life Palace moves to what was the Travel Palace in the original chart (the Shen palace) and becomes Qi Sha (brilliant) in the Life Palace facing Zi Wei and Tian Fu, the pattern called “Qi Sha Chao Dou” (七殺朝斗). The Wealth Palace holds Tan Lang (brilliant) and the Career Palace Po Jun (brilliant): all three sides of Sha-Po-Lang are brilliant, which is exactly the pattern of pioneering and risk, and a far better fit than the original. In 2021, when he became the richest person in the world, he was 51 by traditional Chinese reckoning (which counts a newborn as one), and that falls in the decade of this chart’s Tan Lang Wealth Palace. The Life Palace landing in the opposite palace is no coincidence: in Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so adding six months moves it six palaces. But it is not just a matter of swapping palace names; the bureau and the position of the Zi Wei star change too, and all fourteen major stars move. Another idea online is that “if he built his career in America, use American time.” Converted to US Eastern time the hour is Chou, and the Wealth Palace becomes Tai Yang Quan together with a brilliant Tai Yin, which could also be sold as a billionaire’s chart. Converted to US Pacific time it becomes the Hai hour of the previous day, the Wealth Palace is empty, and the fit gets worse. Note that the season flip rests on “born in the southern hemisphere” and has nothing to do with his later move to the United States. Every version here was picked after the fact, knowing he is the richest man alive, by looking back for the chart that fits. It is hindsight, and purely for entertainment.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Both the Sun and the Ascendant are in Cancer, but the Sun falls in the 12th house (just behind the Ascendant, the backstage position), and the Moon is in Virgo in the 2nd house (money and resources). A Cancer Ascendant makes a shy, self-protective first impression, which matches the introverted engineer he was often described as in his early years; a 12th-house Sun is often read as real motives kept below the surface. The chart ruler, the Moon, sits in Virgo in the 2nd house: Virgo is about detail and efficiency, the 2nd house about resources, which looks a lot like his habit of breaking costs down line by line. Where it does not fit: for disruptive ventures such as rockets, electric cars and brain-computer interfaces, astrologers usually look to Uranus, and his Uranus sits in the 3rd house (communication and learning), not on any of the four angles, so it is not prominent. Mars in Aquarius in the 8th house does have plenty of drive. BaZi calls Wealth unfavorable for him and yet he became the richest man in the world; the natal chart cannot state the size of a fortune either.
